To
parents
and
students,
universities
are
chiefly
places
where
young
people
can
obtain
an
education
and
spend
several
pleasant,
intellectually
stimulating
years.
To
the
learned
callings,
universities are the locus of leading
professional schools that select able students and
train them to
serve
as
competent
practitioners.
To
the
government,
universities
are
vehicles
to
help
achieve
social goals, such as equal opportunity
for minorities, as well as important sources of
sophisticated
knowledge
needed
for
defense,
foreign
policy,
medicine,
and
technological
development.
To
corporate
and
foundation
executives,
along
with
public
officials,
universities
are
also
valuable
repositories of expertise form which to
gain advice in addressing complicated questions. <

We,
the
human
species,
are
confronting
a
planetary
emergency
-
a
threat
to
the
survival
of
our
civilization that is gathering ominous
and destructive potential even as we gather here.
But there is
hopeful news as well: we
have the ability to solve this crisis and avoid
the worst - though not all -
of its
consequences, if we act boldly, decisively and
quickly. However, too many of the world's
leaders are still best described in the
words of Winston Churchill applied to those
who ignored
Adolf Hitler's
threat:
irresolute,
all
powerful
to
be
impotent.
So
today,
we
dumped
another
70
million
tons
of
global-warming pollution into the thin
shell of atmosphere surrounding our planet, as if
it were an
open
sewer.
And
tomorrow,
we
will
dump
a
slightly
larger
amount,
with
the
cumulative
concentrations
now trapping more and more heat from the sun.

“他们在奇怪的

Certainly when a nation is great, so
will be its schools.
There
is no great nation without great
schools.
But the
same holds for its religion, its statesmanship,
its economy, and a thousand other
things.
A
nation’s greatness is the integration of many
elements.
If a
peopl
e is bad politically, it
is vain to expect anything at all of
the most perfect school system.
In such a case schools are for
the
few,
who
live
apart
and
estranged
from
the
rest
of
the
country.
Perhaps
some
day
these
educated

many

the
collective
life
of
their
country,

the
whole national school system.
On the other hand, the
school, when it is truly a functional organ
of the nation, depends far more on the
atmosphere of national culture in which it is
immersed that
it does on the
pedagogical atmosphere created artificially within
it.
A condition of
equilibrium
between this inward and out
ward pressure is essential to produce a good
school.
