There are four seasons in most of the
countries. But the
climate
(气候)
is not
always the same.
In England, winter is not very cold and
summer is not very hot. There is not a
great difference between summer and
winter because it is an island country. In winter
the sea is warmer than the land. The
winds from the sea bring warm air to England. In
summer

They

has a lot
of rain

year.
Sometimes
it rains

The west
of
England is

east.
In Canada
they have four seasons too. But the

Autumn comes after summer. Canadians

beautiful. Winter is the coldest season of the
year. It's
often freezing cold. There
is thick ice on the river or lake. Children like
to go skating
there. Of course, they
should wear warm, thick coats, or they will catch
a cold.

The
haze
(雾霾)
is a big problem in
cities. How much do you know about haze?
Haze can also be
called
“
smog
”
. The
word
“
smog
”
is from the
words“
smoke”
and
“
fog
”
. It is a kind of air pollution
(污染)
caused
(导致)
mostly by
cars and factories.
Smog
will do great harm
(伤害)
to
your health. It can not only make you cough
but also cause skin and eye problems.
It seems that we can do nothing to stop it, but
only wait for the wind to blow all the
smog away. But there are still some easy ways
to keep it from hurting you. Here are
some of them.
1. Don't do
exercise in the open air
Exercising in the open air makes you
breathe
(呼吸)
deeply, and you
will take in
the
particles
(颗粒物)
deep into your
body. So stop exercising in the open air when
there is haze.
2. Stay indoors and keep the air clean
If you can, just stay in
your room and don't open your windows and doors.
When
there is haze around the city, the
best way to keep haze from hurting
you
is to stay
away from it.

Paper and cotton masks can't help you
in the haze weather. Some special masks,
such as N95 masks, can keep you from
breathing in the particles in the air.
4. Change your diet
Scientists find that vitamin A, C and E
can greatly help keep your eyes and nose
safe. So eat more green vegetables and
fresh fruit every day. What's more, do not eat
food with too much fat.

The koala
(考拉)
is
an important symbol of Australia. The koala lives
in open
eucalyptus
(树)
forests
in
south-east
Queensland.
It
is
called

bear,
but
this
animal has nothing to do with the bear.
Koalas have thick fur and large ears. Their flat
nose makes them look cute. In fact,
koalas aren't cute. They have sharp teeth and very
sharp claws
(爪)
!
The koala mother carries
her baby in a pocket while it grows up in the same
way
as a
kangaroo
(袋鼠)
does. The baby
koala grows in its mother's pocket for the first
six months of its life.

The
name
“
koala
”
comes
from
an
Australian
word
that
means“
no
drink
”
.
Koalas get almost all
their water and food from the eucalyptus leaves.
They eat only
eucalyptus leaves. Koalas
sleep about nineteen hours a day!
Why
do
they
sleep
so
much?
Some
people
think
it's
because
they're
lazy.
But
koalas aren't lazy. They sleep so much
because there isn't much energy in eucalyptus
leaves. Koalas don't have much fat, so
they must save their energy. One way to do this
is to move slowly and sleep a lot.
After a day of sleeping they like to move around
and eat just after sunset. They live
alone most of the time.
Koalas protect their trees. If a koala
sees another koala eating in its favourite tree,
it might tell the other koala to leave
by“
barking
(吠叫)
”
at
it. Koalas do
“
talk
”
to
each
other. As well as barks, the
males
(雄性)
make a deep
grunting
(呼噜的)
sound.
The mothers and babies talk in soft
clicking sounds. If they are afraid, they may cry
like a baby. The koala is also an
excellent swimmer. They are able to cross wide and
deep rivers.

still need a kind of place
that a
library provides. In a library, it's easy to get
lost in reading and working and it's
also less possible for us to stop to do
something else.
So working
in a library is quite helpful. We usually call

Hobbies are
activities, which we do in our free time. There
are so many kinds of
hobbies one can
choose for his or her own. Some hobbies are really
expensive, and
some are even in danger.
The most usual hobbies in
our country are as follows:

We

Usually
people

Sports games
Everybody does some sport
activities-sport can keep us fit. Many
students are members of a sports club-
basketball, volleyball or swimming.
The other hobby is watching TV or a
video, playing computer or video games,
but
it is not
so
good for

your mind.
Many people here
like to
spend
their free
time reading books, magazines and newspapers. Some
people like listening
to music better.
Going out can not be cheap now.
Many students can get help from their
hobbies in their future jobs. Hobbies are

Oct. 16 is World Food Day. The UN
started the day in 1979. It reminds people
not to waste food and fight hunger.
A number of people in the
world still don't have enough food to eat. The
food
shortage
(短缺)
is a
big problem all over the world. Now, there are
more than 1, 000
million hungry people
in the world according to the UN. Many children go
to sleep
hungry, and 15 million of them
die of hunger each year.
There are several reasons for food
shortage. First, there are more natural disasters.
Also, a growing
population
(人口)
makes feeding
everyone more difficult.
Another big reason is food waste. Most
people don't realize how much food they
throw away every day. The average
(
平均的)
person throws away
50 kg of food every
year. According to
the UN, more than one third of all food goes to
waste each year.
Over 1,
300 billion kilograms of food is wasted each year.
The food wasted in
Europe can feed 200
million people, while in Latin America 300 million
a year.
So think twice
before you throw away food. You'd better order as
much food as
you can eat at a
restaurant. If you can't eat all, take the rest
home. Some food may not
taste great,
but your body needs it. Keep an eye on what food
you have at home. Don't
buy too much.
Don't cook too much.
