Read
the passage and choose the most
appropriate answer
from the 4
choices marked A), B), C) and
D).
Then you give the
corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.
Task 1
Television has opened
windows in everybody’s life. Young men will never
again go to war as they did in 1914. Millions of
peop
le have
now seen the
effects of battle, resulting in a general dislike
of war, and more interest in helping those who
suffer from all the terrible
things
that have been shown on the screen.
Television has also changed
politics. Even those who live in the most remote
place can now follow state affairs, seeing and
hearing
politicians speak before an
election. Better informed, he/she is more likely
to vote, making their opinion count.
Unfortunately, television’s
influence has been extremely harmful to the young.
Children do not have enough experience to
real
ize that
TV shows
present an unreal world; that TV advertisements
lie to sell products that are sometimes bad or
useless. Children believe and
want
to
practice
what
they
see.
They
do
believe
that
the
violence
they
see
is
normal
and
acceptable.
All
educators
agree
that
the
“television generation”
is more violent than that of their
parents and grandparents.
Also,
the
young
are
less
patient.
Since
they
get
used
to
the
entertaining
and
exciting
elements
of
TV
shows,
they
do
not
have
the
patience
to read an article without pictures, to read a
book that requires thinking, or to
l
isten to a teacher who doesn’t do
funny things like
the people on
children’s programs. And young people expect all
problems to be solved happily in ten, fifteen, or
thirty minut
es---
that’s
the time it takes on the screen.

express their
opinions freely
3.

A.
not reliable
on the whole

useless to people

a good guide
for adults

D.

5.

A.
children
should keep away from TV.
B.
TV programs should be improved
C.
children’s
books should have pictures
D.
TV has a
strong influence on the young
Task 2
The producers
of instant coffee found their product strongly
resisted in the market places despite their
product’s obvious ad
vantages.
Furthermore, the advertising
expenditure for instant coffee was far greater
than that for regular coffee. Efforts were made to
find the
cause of the consumers’
seemingly unreasonable resistance to the product.
The reason given by most people was dislike for
the
taste.
The producer
th
ought that there might be deeper
reasons, however. This was confirmed by one of
motivation research’s classic studies,
one often cited in the trade.
Mason Haire of the University of
California made two shopping lists that were
almost the same except for one item. There were
six
items
common
to
both
lists:
hamburger,
carrots,
bread,
baking
powder,
canned
peaches,
and
potatoes,
with
the
brands
or
amounts
specified.
The
seventh
item,
in
fifth
place
on
both
lists,
read
“
one
pound
Maxwell
House
coffee”
on
one
list
and
“Nescafe
instant
coffee” on the other. One list was
given to each one in a group of fifty women, and
the other list to those in the other
grou
p of the same
size.
These
women
were
asked
to
study
their
list
and
then
to
describe,

they
could,
the
kind

woman
(“personality
and
character”) who would draw up that
shopping list. Nearly half of those who had
received the list including instant coffee
