体的意象主义艺术，
画中意象与书法中的
文字一样，
是一种适于书写的极度概括
抽象的象征符号，
伴随着意象符号的是传统的程式表现技巧。
古代的大师们创造
着独自心中的意象及其程式，风格迥异，生机勃勃。
后来，
多数人惯于对古人程式的模仿，
所作之画千人一面。

滥，
雅的不再雅，
俗的则更俗。

Traditional Chinese painting did not
imitate nature; its artistic form of
imagery mainly served the purpose of
expressing human spirit and disposition.
The
imagism
意象
in
the
paintings,
highly
abstract
symbols
accompanied
by
images,
could
be achieved through the conventional artistic
formalities, not unlike those found
in
Chinese calligraphy.
Ancient
masters created
their own internal
images and their
styles that
were all markedly diverse and lively.
Later on, these
artistic patterns were imitated and copied to the
point where most
paintings were nothing
but
look-alikes.
The result of such abuse was that what
had
meant
to
be elegant
were no longer
elegant; what
had been considered
vulgar
were
made
even more vulgar. Modern Chinese painting is still
caught in a downward spiral,
a dilemma
at best. A Wen and some of his fellow artists are
bent on breaking the mold.
They want to
find their individual identities; they want to be
different; they want to
create
new
imageries
and
new
styles
that
they
can
proudly
call
their
own
and
in
keeping
with
the
modern
times.
Meanwhile,
they
continue
to
be
inspired
by
the
elegance of the
past.

In my
seventies, I’ve been a seasoned senior, shaping my
own perspectives of
the world events.
However, it’s still hard for me to discern the
truth, wandering
at the line between
being insightful and fuzzy. As Confucius said, “a
man of
seventies would follow his heart
within the certain rules.” People at this stage
are what we call - a great mind. Human
beings as common with dreams and
troubles could never get rid of the
daily necessities and the desires in this
vanity fair. Thus it’s so
hard to follow one’s own
heart.
To the
elderly, it doesn’t mean satisfying himself
without considering the
around
situations or criticizing other people absurdly
upon his own experience
to follow one’s
heart. In other words, they should find a path to
the “Kingdom of
Freedom” in the deep
side of their hearts. One will have a wider range
of
choices so that they can be utterly
indulged in the greatness of life. No matter
eternal or temporary, the freedom would
only be rational within the certain life.
That’s the definition of “within the
rules” according to Confucius.

On the verge of 70, I am
supposed to have weathered twists and turns in
life and had a grasp of mundane
affairs. Sometimes, however, I am still
lingering in-between consciousness and
unconsciousness. Confucius once
said:
“At 70, one can follow his inclin
ation
without overriding conventional
norms,”
- a conclusion one
will not draw until he is filled with supreme
enlightenment. We, mortals living in
such an acquisitive society, bustle about
everyday for daily necessities and are
lured by sensual indulgence such as
wine and women. What a daunting
challenge it is to follow one’s heart in the
face of pursuits and perplexities.
Following one’s desire does not
necessarily mean one can act his way or
capitalize on his seniority for the
aged.
That is to say one should live
his own
life and build his Utopia in
his soul. The vast sea allows fishes to leap
about,
and open sky leaves birds to
glide. So carefree in our self-assurance, we can
enjoy freedom as infinite as it is
finite and such unrestrained freedom is
restricted by restrained live space.
This is where the essence of not overriding
the conversional norms lies.
