A

No woman can be too rich or too thin. This saying often attributed to the late Duchess (

公爵夫人

)

of Windsor embodies much of the odd spirit of our times. Being thin is deemed as such a virtue.

The problem with such a view is that some people actually attempt to live by it. I myself have

fantasies (

想象

) of slipping into narrow designer clothes. Consequently, I have been on a diet for the

better

or worse

part of my life. Being rich wouldn't be bad either, but that won't happen unless

an unknown relative dies suddenly in some distant land, leaving me millions of dollars.

Where did we go off the track? When did eating butter become a sin,

and

a

little

bit

of

extra

flesh

unappealing,

if

not

repellent?

All

religions

have certain days when people refrain from eating and excessive eating is

one

of

Christianity's

seven

deadly

sins.

However,

until

quite

recently,

most people had a problem getting enough to eat. In some religious groups,

wealth

was

a

symbol

of

probable

salvation

and

high

morals,

and

fatness

a

sign

of

wealth

and

well-

being.

Today the opposite is true. We have shifted to thinness as our new mark of virtue. The result is

that

being

fat

or

even

only

somewhat

overweight

is

bad

because

it

implies

a

lack

of

moral

strength.

Our obsession with thinness is also fueled by health concerns. It is true that in this country we

have more overweight people than ever before, and that in many cases, being overweight correlates

1

with an increased risk of heart and blood vessel disease. These diseases, however, may have as much

to do with our way of

life

and our high-

fat diets as with excess weight. And the associated risk of

cancer in the digestive system may be more of a dietary problem

too much fat and a lack of fiber

than a weight problem.

The real concern, then, is not that we weigh too much, but that we neither exercise enough nor

eat

well.

Exercise

is

necessary

for

strong

bones

and

both

heart

and

lung

health.

A

balanced

diet

without a lot of fat can also help the body avoid many diseases. We should surely stop paying so much

attention

to

weight.

Simply

being

thin

is

not

enough.

It

is

actually

hazardous

if

those

who

get

(or

already

are)

thin

think

they

are

automatically

healthy

and

thus

free

from

paying

attention

to

their

overall lifestyle. Thinness can be pure vain glory.

21

In the eyes of the author, an odd phenomenon nowadays is that ________.

A

the Duchess of Windsor is regarded as a woman of virtue

B

looking slim is a symbol of having a large fortune

C

being thin is viewed as a much desired quality

D

religious people are not necessarily virtuous

22

Swept by the prevailing trend, the author ________.

A

had to go on a diet for the greater part of her life

B

could still prevent herself from going off the track

C

had to seek help from rich distant relatives

D

had to wear highly fashionable clothes

23

In human history, people's views on body weight ______.

A

were closely related to their religious beliefs

B

changed from time to time

C

varied between the poor and the rich

D

led to different moral standards

24

What's the author's advice to women who are absorbed in the idea of thinness?

A

They should be more concerned about their overall lifestyle.

B

They should be more watchful for fatal diseases.

C

They should gain weight to look healthy.

D

They should rid themselves of fantasies about designer clothes.

B

I

now

work

40

hours

a

week

at

a

weather

company

and

I

love

it.

Compared

to

when

I

first

became a mom, I don't feel bad about being away from my three kids. When I had my first child, I

2

was a busy manager of a local news station. My husband had a part-

time job and cared for her the rest

of the time. I was determined to find a way to be home more. Once I became pregnant with my second

kid, I quit my job to focus fully on writing.

At first I felt like I was living the_dream. I was a work-

from-

home mom who never had to be

away

from

my

children.

But

working

from

home

can

end

up

being

more

stressful

than

working

full-

time or being a stay-

at-

home mom. Because you're frequently torn between work, keeping house,

and telling sweet faces you don't have time to play. Ever tried writing an article with a baby screaming?

It was awful.

I was so stressed I eventually started taking my kids to a day care center a couple days a week.

The whole reason I worked so hard to be able to write for a living was to be at home with my kids and

here I was taking them to a day care center. I thought I was a failure then.

Over the past five years of being a freelancer (

自由作家

), I've realized a couple of things. For me,

working from home isn't

“living the dream”.

As I wrote six months ago,

“I thought I felt bad leaving

my daughter for ten hours a day but now she is old enough to ask me to read her a story. Try telling

your kid no, 20 times a day. It's cruel. You end up feeling worse for having to ignore them than you

would if you were gone at a job all day.”

I also realize not having anywhere to be and not socializing

with people weren't good for my mental well-

being.

Not only that, but I can now show my kids that Mom is important and has a job at a flashy office

building,

something

they

didn't

realize

when

I

sat

around

in

yoga

pants

(

瑜伽裤

)

typing

on

my

computer all day long.

25

The underlined part

“the dream”

in Paragraph 2 refers to

“________”

A

working from home

B

earning a lot of money

C

not suffering from stress

D

not taking care of her kids

26

While working as a freelancer, the author ________.

A

made a great many friends

B

was not good at telling stories

C

left her daughter for a long time

D

felt terrible for ignoring her kids

27

We can infer that now the author's kids ________.

A

are much prouder of their mom

B

realize why their mom is important

C

are feeling sad for leaving their mom

3

D

understand why their mom works so hard

C

As the American example shows, the

“yes”

The American experience owes its success to many factors (

因素

Among them is, of course,

the vision of the nation's founding fathers in establishing a government of, by and for the

provided a constitution (
