Dialogue 1
Telephoning the travel agency

Mr. Li: Good morning. This is the China International Travel Service. What can I do for you?
Mr. Johnson: Good morning. Can I speak to Mr. Li Ming?
Mr. Li: This is Li Ming speaking.
Mr. Johnson: Well, hello, Mr. Li. This is Steve Johnson. I have some friends who will come to
China next Monday from Ann Arbor, Michigan to attend a package tour organized by your
agency.
Mr. Li: Yes, that’s right. I am responsible for the organization of their trip in China.
Mr. Johnson: Right. They want me to discuss some details with you.
Mr. Li: Fine.
Mr. Johnson: I'd like to go over with you the arrangement of the trip.
Mr. Li: O.K. After they have arrived on the morning of the August 16th, we will go directly to the
hotel, check in and have lunch there. In the afternoon, we shall go to the Beijing Zoological
Park and see the giant pandas there.
Mr. Johnson: Wonderful. I believe the group members will love that.
Mr. Li: We shall have a formal reception dinner at the Minzu Hotel near Tian’anmen Square.
Mr. Johnson: Good.
Mr. Li: We will leave pretty early on the 17th for the Great Wall at Badaling. It will be a two-hour
bus trip. We will climb the Great Wall and have lunch there. In the afternoon, we will stop on
the way back to visit the Ming Tombs which are the mausoleums of 13 emperors of the Ming
Dynasty. One of them has been opened and we shall see its underground palace.
Mr. Johnson: That should be interesting.
Mr. Li: I believe so. In the evening, they will see a performance of Beijing Opera.
Mr. Johnson: What about the morning of the 18th?
Mr. Li: On the morning of the 18th, we shall visit the renowned Palace Museum with its
different halls, its clock and watch exhibition, and the treasure halls. As it is the largest building
complex in the world, we will spend the whole morning there.
Mr. Johnson: What about the afternoon?
Mr. Li: We will visit the Museum of Chinese History, which houses some of the best cultural
relics in China. Then we will take a stroll around the Tian'anmen Square before dinner. In the
evening, we will walk through some narrow streets in the old city to get a glimpse of the daily
life of Beijing natives and to have an idea of what Beijing used to be like.
Mr. Johnson: Excellent.
Mr. Johnson: And they will arrive in Xi'an in the evening of the 19th, right?
Mr. Li: Right. We will have a dinner arranged by my colleague there. On the following morning,
we will take a bus trip to visit Qianling. It is the joint burial place of Emperor Gao Zong and
Empress Wu Zetian of the Tang Dynasty. The tomb is built on an awe-inspiring scale and

represents the classical style of Tang Dynasty mausoleums.
Mr. Johnson: How long will that take?
Mr. Li: It will take a whole day. When we return to Xi'an, we will have a dinner with strong
Shaanxi flavor. And after that, we will walk on the ancient city wall of Xi'an and enjoy the night
scenes.
Mr. Johnson: That's a nice idea.
Mr. Li: On the morning of the 21st, we will visit the Museum of Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses
and Huaqing Pool which used to be the bathing ground of the famous imperial concubine Yang
Yuhuan of the Tang Dynasty. In the afternoon, we shall visit the Shaanxi Provincial Museum
and the Great Wild Goose Pagoda. In the evening, we will see a Tang-style song and dance
performance.
Mr. Johnson: Is it in the style of the ancient Tang Dynasty?
Mr. Li: Yes. On the following morning, we will visit the Forest of Steles and see the art of
Chinese calligraphy. We will then fly to Hangzhou in the afternoon.
Mr. Johnson: How long will the flight take?
Mr. Li: About 2 hours. After checking in, we shall have a wonderful dinner at a famous
restaurant where the great Tang Dynasty poet Bai Juyi was said to have dined. On the next
day, we shall tour around the West Lake. We will leave for Suzhou in the evening by train,
arriving there at around 10: 30 p.m. On the 24th, we will visit some famous gardens there,
including the exquisite Zhuozhenyuan Garden. And then, in order to make the best of time, we
will take a night flight to Guilin.
Mr. Johnson: A good idea.
Mr. Li: We will visit the wondrous Seven Star Garden, famous for its stalactites and stalagmites.
Then at eleven o'clock, we will take a boat trip down the beautiful Lijiang River to Yangshuo.
They will have a good opportunity to see the karst mountains there. Then we will return to
Guilin by bus. After a farewell dinner, they will take the night flight to Hong Kong. This will give
them a whole day in Hong Kong to do shopping.
Mr. Johnson: Excellent.
Mr. Li: What do you think of the itinerary?
Mr. Johnson: It is great. My friends said that they were very interested in Chinese culture, so
they wish that you could arrange some lectures for them during the tour.
Mr. Li: Yes, I can arrange that.
Mr. Johnson: Perfect. Thank you very much for working out such an excellent itinerary.
Mr. Li: It's my pleasure.
Mr. Johnson: I will telephone my friends and tell them the details. I am sure they will be very
pleased. Bye.
