Aims
The MATESOL programme provides a
practical, professionally-
focused
Masters’ degree for graduates who are in need of
an
advanced academic
qualification in TESOL. It is designed for English
language teachers, teacher educators and language
professionals working in
areas of language education policy, curriculum
planning, materials development and assessment in
Hong Kong, Chinese mainland
or overseas.
The programme
core provides in-depth knowledge of:

description and teaching of English language
pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar.
How first and second languages are
learnt, processed and produced.
How to design and evaluate appropriate
language curricula, assessments and materials.
State-of-art practice in
TESOL methodology and the theories of mind and
social context that shape it.
Programme Structure
The MATESOL will be offered
in Full-time and Part-time modes concurrently. All
courses will be offered once per year.
Full-time students will complete the
course requirements in one year. Part-time
students will complete the same course
requirements in two years. Completion
of coursework and additional non-credit bearing
workshops on Second Language Research
Methods (or the Second Language
Research Methods course) will be a prerequisite
for commencing a dissertation. Other than this
there will be no
prerequisite courses.
The MATESOL provides a solid grounding
in state-of-the-art research and practice through
core courses in linguistics (with
applications for teaching and
curriculum planning in the areas of pronunciation,
vocabulary and grammar) and the practice of
TES
assessment,
and methodology). In addition, the
MATESOL offers tailor-made degree strands to meet
specific local and regional needs in TESOL.
MATESOL (English Studies)
provides a broad-based introduction to
TESOL research and practice. This degree strand
meets the
Education
Bureau’s Postgraduate Subject Knowledge
requirements* f
or English teaching in
Hong Kong. It is especially suited to
local and overseas English language
teachers who need to upgrade their professional
qualifications.
*The
recognition is subject to the approval of
EDB
MATESOL
(English as an International Language)
focuses on the roles and forms of
English in international and regional
settings. It is especially suited to
English language teachers who intend to work in
international contexts and to language
professionals intending to work in
language education policy, curriculum planning,
materials development and assessment.
MATESOL (Young Learners)
is
offered in the context of the rapid expansion of
elementary level English language teaching
in Hong Kong, Chinese
mainland and other parts of the region. It is
especially suited to teachers, teacher educators
and planners
working in
primary and early childhood education.
MATESOL (Literature and Language Arts)
is offered in the context of the
growing importance of language arts and literature
in
secondary and tertiary
level English language teaching. It is especially
suited to secondary and tertiary teachers, teacher
educators
and planners
working in this area.
MATESOL (Applied
Linguistics)
provides a broad-based
introduction to TESOL research and a firm
grounding in research
methodology. It is designed for
students with a particular interest in TESOL
research as a gateway to EdD or PhD study who do
not wish to follow one of
the other degree strands.
The programme requirement for all
degree strands is 30 cps, All participants must
complete 6 core courses of 3 cps each (18 cps)
