Snake Catchers
There is a type of snake which is very
mystical. They are colorful but
dangerous. If they touch plants, the
plants will wither. Likewise, if they
bite human being, those people will not
be cured. But if you frizzle these
snakes’
bodies, these dry
bodies can be a kind of medicine. This medicine
can cure many kinds of diseases such as
convulsions. Since the medicine is
so
powerful, the emperor of this nation announces
that if someone catches
these kinds of
snakes and give them to the court, that person
will not have
to pay taxes. The taxes
are levied twice a year. Those residents would
rather catch these lethal snakes
instead of paying taxes. This is because the
taxes of this nation are too high.
Though this errand is very dangerous,
many people contend to catch the
snakes. These lethal snakes cause the
death of a lot of people. Thus, the
residents’
lives are filled with untold
suffering.
Once a
reporter went to this poor country to observe how
residents
lived there. The reporter
acquainted a farmer called Jason. He told the
reporter that his family had caught
these lethal
snakes instead of paying
taxes for three generations. The
reporter asked Jason to visit elder
members of his family, Jason said
sadly: “My father died becau
se of this
errand. Neither did my grandpa.
”
The reporter sympathized
with Jason, so he inquired if he would like
to change the errand. Jason shook his
head at
once and said: “Paying taxes
is unluckier than catching lethal
snakes. If I did not do this errand, I will
poorer than now!” He explained that his
family had lived there for over
sixty
years. His family had a hard time during these
years because they
always tried their
best to catch as many snakes as they could.
Although
Jason’s ancestors’ life was
d
ifficult, they still lived better than
their
neighborhood.
Jason looked around and told the
reporter that his neighbors were
harassed by local government officials.
He described how cruel those
government
officials disturbed residents’ daily
life.
The reporter got angry
with the government
officials.
Jason took the
reporter to his home and pointed at his neighbors’
fields
and said: “They have
given all their crops to those officials but still
not
enough. The taxes are too high so
that my neighbors went to my house to
beg a favor of me. I gave them some of
my products and just kept a little
for
my family.”
Jason picked up
a piece of wither wheat then looked sadly at it.
“Those officials never save our
products…… My neighbors’ livestock bark,
jump and run everywhere when these
wicked government officials come.
