(1ndirect
vs
.
Direct)
p>
(Euphemism)
H<
/p>
.
W
.
Fowl
er
“a
mild or vague or periphrastic expression as a
substitute for blunt precision or
disag
reeable truth”
。
pass away
,
go to one?s
Maker
,
sleep with one?s
fathers
,
join the great
majority
,
pay the
debt of nature
,
be
with God
,
go to
glory
,
go to a better
world
,
sleep the final
sleep
,
cross the Great
Divide
,
climb the
golden staircase
等几十种说法;
go to the restroom (washroom)
,
use the
bathroom
,
wash one?s
hands
,
relieve
oneself
,
answer a call of
nature
see a man about a
horse
fix one?s
face
,
powder one?s
nose
be expecting
,
in a
family way
(
美
)
,
in
the family way
(
英
)
,
in
an
interesting condition
说
“
有喜
”
、
“
重身子
”
、
“
双身子
”
、
“
产妇
”
。提
到
“
stout
,
on the heavy side
,
说
“
发福
”
。
说到
“
老人
”
、
“
年老
”<
/p>
senior
citizen
,
elderly
people
,
advanced
in
age
(officialese)
/p>
官
僚
英
语
(bureaucratese)
、
五

大
楼
英
语
(Pentagonese)
、
国
务
院
英
语
(State-Departmentese)
、
(gobbledygook)
(urbanbabble)
。
underutilization(
)
或
< br>human resources underdevelopment(
)
;生活在贫困线下的穷人,称为
the
underprivileged(
)
或
disadvantag
ed(
)
;
negative sa
ver(
)
;他们居住的贫
substandard housing(
)
、
inner city
或
central city(
内城区
)
;许多人被送进监狱,按照官方的说法
入
house
of
correction
或
correctio
nal
facility(
“
捏造
”
只是
less than trut
hful(
)
,
“
窃听
”
也只是
intelligence gathering(
)
,
“
”
不过
是
liquidati
on(
清算
)
p>
George Orwell
Things like the
continuance of British rule in
India,
the Russian purges and deportations, the
dropping of the atomic bombs on
Japan
,
can indeed be
defended
,
but only by
arguments which are
too brutal for most
people to face
,
and which do
not square with the professed aims of political
parties
.
Thus
political language has to consist largely of
euphemism
,
question-
begging
,
and sheer
cloudy
vagueness
.
Defenseless
villages are bombarded from the
air
,
the inhabitants driven
out into
the
countryside
,
the cattle
machine-gunned
,
the huts set
on fire with incendiary
bullets
:
this is
called
pacification
.
Millions
of
peasants
are
robbed
of
their
farms
and
sent
trudging
along
the
roads with no more than
they can carry
:
this is
called transfer of population or rectification of
frontiers. People are imprisoned for
years without trial, or shot in the back of the
neck, or sent to
die of scurvy in
Arctic lumber camps
:
this is
called elimination of unreliable elements.
p>
international
armed
conflict
(
/p>
)
;对美国空军来说,空袭只是
air
support(
空中增
援
)
ove
rflight (
)
neutral
ize
the
adversary(
)
circa
dian
deregulation(
)
(retreat)?
?
撤出
?(exfilt
ration)
或
?
?(an
adjustment
of
the front)
?
战败
?(defeat)
?(strategic withdrawal
)
。
”
deterrence(
威慑
)
和
p>
first
strike
capability(
)
nuclear(
核子
)

)
。
2
(occupational
euphemism)
sanitary
engineer(=plumber)
管子工
meat
technologist(=butcher)
屠户
prison
officer(=gaoler)
rodent operator(=rat
catcher)
clairvoyant reader(=fortune
teller)
2
research consultant(=file
clerk)
档案
(
)
管理员
funeral director(=undertaker)
plant
superintendent
,
supervisor(=f
oreman)
aisle manager(=
floorwalker)
proprietor of loan
office(=pawnbroker)
public relations counselor(=press-
agent)
member of the oldest
profession(=prostitute)
cop
,
law
enforcement officer
;
“I know in
my heart I?m not a liar
,
I?m
just a prev
aricator
.
< br>”

< br>E

Day
在
“The Writer?s Rhetoric and
Handbook”
Such indirectness may
seem
amusing, but people also use a sinister kind of
euphemism to
mask realities that ought
not be concealed
.
The
CIA
,
for
instance
,
substitutes the
vague phrase
“terminate with extreme
prejudice” for the ugly word
“murder”
.
The
Pentagon refers to weapons
designed to
kill people as
“antipersonnel
implements”
. Instead of
“bombing”
,
the Air
Force speaks
of
“protective
reaction strikes”
.
Such
transparent attempts to make killing human beings
sound
inoffensive are dangerously
misleading
.
(Implicitness)
p>
/p>
1
.
述
(understatement)
;
(make big things seem tri
fle)
,
A
.
Maurois
(reserved)
/p>
3
An
Englishman will say
“I have a little
house in the
country
”
;
when he
invites you to stay
with him you will
discover that the little house is a place with
three hundred bedrooms
.
If
you are
a
world
tennis-
champion
,
say
“Yes
,
I
don?t
play
too
badly”
.
If
you
have
crossed
the
Atlantic
alone in a
small boat
,
say
“I
do a little sailing”
.
(controlled)
(casual)
曲言
(mei
osis)
1)It was nothing; a pinprick.
2)He had five sandwiches and a quart of
milk for his snack
.
3)He had a mansion in the country and
another little place in
town
.
(“The
English
Character”)
In

The Englishman is

.
Of
course
,
an Englishman feels
no less deeply than any other
nationality
,
but he tends
to display his feelings far
less
.
This is reflected in
his use of language
.
Imagine

Whereas
a

emotional
temperament
might

,
??precious”
, the Englishman
will flatly state

. An
Englishman who has seen a highly successful and
enjoyable film recommends
it to a

or on
seeing a breathtaking landscape he
might convey his pleasure by saying
,
“Nice

”The overseas visitor

< br>This special use of language

particularly common
in English, is known
as
understatement
.
2
p>
p>
no rare
occurrence
代替
a frequent
occurrence
,用
no small
< br>代替
great
1)To
my no small astonishment
,
I
found the house on fire
.
2)It serves no little purpose to
continue public discussion of this
issue
.
3)The press

Tory
and Labor alike
,

.
4)There is, no untroubled pace in this

5)Martin (who was very generous with

(the
?not un
-
?habit)
p>
not
unkindly
,
not
unnaturally
或
not unjustifiabl
y
比用
kindly
,
naturally
或
justifiably
George
Orwell
“A not unblac
k
dog was chasing a not unsmall rabbit across
a not ungreen
field
.
”
p>
1)He didn
?
t half
like that girl
.
(=He liked
her very much)
2)I couldn
?
t feel
better
.
(=I?m feeling first
-rate)
3)If
that isn

t what I want1
(=That is the very thing
I
want)
!
4)He can?t see you quickly
enough
.
(=He
desires to see you as soon as possible)
5)One
could not be too careful in a new neighborhood
.
(J

)
?
6)The importance of this conference
cannot be overestimated
.
7)I couldn?t agree with you
more
.
Someone?s got to
be
tough if you want to stay in
business
.
8)
It

a
wise
man
that
never
makes
mistakes
.
(=The
wisest
man
sometimes
makes
mistakes)
”(pleona
stic negat
ion)
1)What dirty means would he not resort
to!
!
2)There was no knowing at what moment
he might not put in an
appearance
,
and whenever
he did show
,
it
was to storm about
something
.
(Samuel Butler)
;
3)If the walls of that room
could speak
,
what an amount
of blundering and capricious cruelty
would they not bear witness to! (Samuel
Butler)
l
4)I ran
away
,
…I don?t know how far I
didn'

.
(Katherine Mansfield)
p>

!
What a busy
street
,
with so many people
coming and going
.
2)
How happy they were to see each other!
3)
He had a hard time squeezing through
the crowd to get up to the
platform
.
3
(indirect n
egation)
p>
a)
(transferred
negation)
R<

Quirk
等人

如用
