Acupuncture is known as “zhenjiu” in Chinese. Growing up, I’d always considered it out of

date. As we know, acupuncture treatment lasts a long period and causes a lot of pain. Sometimes

simply taking a pill can treat the same illness. But my experience made me change my mind.

Last month, I slept through a flight from London to Beijing. When I woke up, I found that I

could no longer move my right arm and fingers. There was no pain. My arm

simply didn’t follow

my brain’s instructions to move, as if it was no longer mine.

One doctor said he could do nothing but give me some pills. “Rest for two months first and

come back for an examination.” I felt great fear.

When

I

felt

helpless,

my

friend,

an acupuncturist

in

Sichuan,

offered

to help.

I

started

my

acupuncture treatment the next day. At first, I was worried. After a few days, I could move my

fingers.

I

chopsticks.

Within

a

month,

I

got

almost

well.

It

was

amazing. How do these tiny needles treat illnesses? Is it magic? Or simply luck? I tried to find out.

Acupuncture first appeared in China more than 2

000 years ago. It works by improving the

smooth flow of “qi”. “Qi” flows through “jingluo” throughout the body.

Alt

hough acupuncture can’t treat all illnesses, at least it creates a good starting point to build

a healthy body. Recently, it has spread internationally, which shows the power of acupuncture. I

hope this kind of traditional Chinese medicine will bring health and happiness to friends all over

the world.

1. Why does the writer mention “a pill” in Paragraph 1

?

A. To give an example.

C. To make a comparison.

2. What happened to the writer during the flight?

A. She had a bad dream.

B. Her fingers hurt seriously.

C. She couldn’t control her arm.

D. Her arm was painful for no reason.

3. Which of the following things can be used during an acupuncture treatment?

4. What can we learn from the passage?

A. The writer got well simply because of good luck.

B. Before trying acupuncture, the writer was sure about it.

C. Acupuncture is so amazing that it can treat all illnesses.

D. When “qi” doesn’t flow smoothly, the p

erson is unhealthy.

5. What’s the main idea of the passage?

B. Acupuncture treatment is well worth a try.

C. Chinese medicine is better than Western medicine.
