II. Reading Comprehension
Directions:
There are 4 passages in this part. Each
passage is followed by 5 questions. For each
question there are 4 choices marked A),
B), C), and D). Choose the ONE answer that
best completes each sentence.
Passage 1
Many students
believe that math is an inherited
ability
—
either they have the
math gene, or
they
don
’
t. but a recent research
shows that inborn talent might not be as important
as we think. In
the long run, the most
successful students are often those who work the
hardest, not those with the
highest
IQ
’
s.
These
students
believe
that
perseverance,
not
an
innate
gift,
is
the
key
to
achievement.
In
her
book
Mindset,
The New Psychology
of
Success
, Carol Dweck
argues
that
a
positive
mindset
is
what
makes
some
students
push
themselves
when
others
give
up.
Students
with
a <
/p>
“
fixed
”
mindset believe that they were born with a certain
set of talents. They see challenges as a
sign that they
’
ve
reached the limit on their potential, and view
challenges as a chance to learn and
improve. They know that their
intelligence can be built through experience and
effort, and are not
held back by the
idea of inborn restrictions.
Geoff
Colvin delivers a similar message in his book,
Talent Is Overrated
. He
demonstrates
that success is almost
always the result of what he calls
“
deliberate
practice
”
, a concentrated
effort
to
improve
one
’
s
skills
through
focused
effort.
Inborn
talent
might
make
a
difference
when
a
subject
is
first
tackled,
but
years
later
it
’
s
the
hard
workers
who
are
the
most
successful.
Math
teacher Kim Callan
agrees:
“
It is rare for a
hard-working student to fail my
class.
”
Having
the
right
mindset
is
critical
to
success.
Children
need
to
believe
in
their
ability
to
overcome challenges
through concentrated effort. If you place your
child in the right math class
and
encourage her to work hard,
there
’
s no limit to what she
will be able to accomplish.
1.
What does the passage mainly discuss?
A) How to help children control their
states of mind.
B) How to know whether
a child
’
s talent is inborn
or acquired.
C) Parents are very
important in their
children
’
s learning.
D) What kind of students can be
successful in math.
2.
According to Carol
Dweck
’
s theory, which of the
following is right?
A) You have a good
mindset if you insist on advancing when others
stop trying.
B) You do not need to
challenge with others if you have an inherited
ability.
C) You can never improve your
ability through your efforts and practice.
D) Your potential is limited, so you
needn
’
t work heart and soul.
3.
Why does the author quote
Geoff Colvin
’
s
demonstration?
A) To state that Carol
Dweck
’
s theory is not right.
B) To explain that inborn talent is
very important.
C) To prove
whose view is better, Carol
Dweck
’
s of Geoff
Colvin
’
s.
D) To
show that one
’
s skills can
be improved through careful and long practices.
4.
What is the point of the
math teacher Kim Callan?
A) All of the
hard-working students failed in his math class.
B) Very Few of the hard-working
students failed in his math class.
C)
Some of the hard-working students failed in his
math class.
D) Quite a lot of the hard-
working students failed in his math class.
5.
Inborn talent might work
when ________.
A) students have
finished learning a subject
B) students
start to learn a subject
C) it takes a
long time to learn a subject
D) a
subject is hard to learn
Passage 2
You might not
normally think of frogs as being colorful, but
these frogs definitely
are
—
the
dart-
poison
frogs
of
Central
and
South
America.
They
have
striking
colors
—
often
yellow
with
black
stripes or deep blue with black spots.
Beyond being nice to look at, these
markings have a purpose. They warn predators that
these
frogs
are
poisonous.
When
threatened,
these
frogs
secrete
a
substance
through
their
skin
that
would easily kill whatever animal might
try to eat them. Their bright colors communicate
this, and
so most animals tend not to
hunt them.
Now,
speaking
of
hunting,
for
centuries
these
frogs
were
sought
after
by
hunters.
As
you
might
think, the hunters didn
’
t
want to eat the frogs, but rather, they captured
them for their poison.
They would add
the poison to the tips of their hunting
arrows
—
of course, nowadays
most hunters
use guns.
These
days
dart-poison
frogs
are
of
less
interest
to
hunters
than
to
medical
researchers.
Researchers believe that they can make
new heart medicine from the poison, because it
acts as a
stimulant on the
body
’
s nervous system.
Researchers think they would use it to stimulate a
weak
heart.
There is ,
however, a problem with doing research on these
frogs. Those that are caught in the
wild will produce their poison until
they die. However, those that are born in
captivity will not
produce any poison
at all.
6.
What is the
passage mainly about?
A) The
characteristics of dart-poison frogs.
B) The habitat of dart-poison fogs.
C) The role of dart-poison frogs in
their ecosystem.
D) The various ways
dart-poison frogs can camouflage themselves.
7.
What does the speaker
imply about the frogs
’
colors?
A) They
don
’
t vary within the
species.
B) They change when the frog
is threatened .
C) They attract the
frogs
’
mates.
D)
They help protect the frogs.
8.
What did hunters use to do with the
frogs that they captured?
A) They ate
them.
B) They used their skins to make
dyes.
C) They collected the
frogs
’
poison.
D)
They used them to make medicine.
9.
What is the problem with frogs born in
captivity?
A) They die shortly after
birth.
B) They
don
’
t produce any poison.
C) Their behavior is too unpredictable.
D) They don
’
t
develop the colorful markings.
10.
Why are scientists studying dart-poison
frogs?
A) To develop new drug
therapies.
B) To learn how to reverse
the effects of their poison.
C) To
discover how to breed them successfully in
captivity.
D) To help repopulate the
species.
Passage 3
The first day of university
our professor introduced a new student
who appears to be very
different from
the rest of us. That is Rose, an eighty-seven-
year-old lady who always wore a big
smile on her face.
“Why are you in college at
this age?” I asked. I was curious what may have
motivated her to
be taking on this
challenge at her age. “I always dre
amed
of having a college education and now
I’m getting one!” she told me.
Over the year, Rose became
a campus icon and she easily made friends wherever
she went.
