Female
’
s family role
and social change
From the history, we can
roughly learn four stages of family roles of
the
female.
Great
changes
have
taken
place
in
the
society,
as
well
as
among the
female
’
s life and statue.
In
the
early
times
in
America,
women
are
supposed
to
work
as
a
servant to
their husbands. Women have no rights in their
family, let alone
rights of politics
and social issues.
As late as 1850,wife-
beating was legal in almost all the states of the
U.S. The wife had no power in family
matters and her possessions and
earnings belonged to her husband.
Things are worse in China, women are
not only the servant of their
husband,
but
also
can
be
sold
as
slaves.
One
man
has
several
wives
is
common
in
ancient
China.
Exactly,
the
women
should
be
called
concubines except the
leading or legal wife. And those women are treated
as child bearers.
However, most Chinese women have be
household wives for a long
time. They
do not need to work outside, and they can do some
work in
their own house ,such as doing
some washing, sewing, and coking. And
they need to take good care of their
children if they live in a poor family.
If
they
live
in
a
rich
family,
they
do
not need
to
do
much
house
work,
because
the
servants
will
do
it.
But
they
need
to
obey
whatever
their
husbands told them.
So,
American
women
just
do
not
have
some
basic
rights,
while
Chinese women are tortured by their
husbands and the society, and they
are
not treated as human to some degree.
The
industrial
revolution
speed
up
the
development
of
American
women
’
s movement
and their awareness of obtaining more
rights.
After
the
industrial
revolution,
the U.S.
Industry
developed
so
fast
that the
country turned to a industrial country from an
agricultural country.
The
development
of
economy
had
a
profound
influence
on
the
female.
Opportunities
for
women
to
work
outside
the
household
increased,
so
many women could earn
money by themselves.
Women living in the bottom
of the society worked in the factory, and
the middle class women work as
teachers, lawyers, typewriters, and so on.
The
economic
independence
of
the
female
encouraged
them
to
pursue
and
fight
for
their
political
rights,
as
well
as their
own
rights
in
family
issues and family
status, such as the right to vote and the right to
decide,
or to have their say in some
family affairs.
While
in
China,
women
’
s
status
improved
a
lot
in
the
Republic
of
China
era. After the Revolution of 1911,the feudal
system was abolished.
So women have
some right of freedom and democracy, but because
of the
rooted thought that men enjoy
higher status than women, the female can
