1. Introduction
There is a riddle about sexism: A man
went travelling with his son, unfortunately,
they meet an accident on the
road.
The man dead at the
scene and his son was injured so
seriously that was sent to the
hospital. At that time a doctor saw this boy at
last gasp and
cried:
”
Oh
my
god,
he
is
my
son!”
This
riddle
was
asking
what’s
the
relationship
between
the
boy
and
the
doctor?
Obviously,
the
doctor
was
the
mother
of
the
boy.
However there are still
a lot of people could not solve the riddle, it is
because they are
lost into the framed
formula of thinking that the doctor is always
male, people will call
them
“
women
doctors
”
if they are
female.
A famous linguist Boas has said
:
“
language reflects
culture, culture decides language.
The
reason that why sexism is existing in English
language is because sexism is deeply
rooted
in
our
society
”
(Boas,164).
And
the
word
sexism
also
has
important
connection
with Feminism. In term of this,
feminism has made a great influnency to the sexism
in
the
modern
English.
Today,
the
attitude
that
people
treat
those
words
are
also
become
different.

Literature review
2.1 Sexism
The
word of sexism is come into being with Western
feminism, so in the it is a new
word
in
English
language,
in
Webster’
s
New
International
Dictionary
,
it
has
written
sexism is refers to the unfair
treatment to people, especially women, because of
their sex.
And
in
Cihai
it
is
explained
as
an
unreasonable
social
phenomenon
that
woman
is
restricted
serverly
in
futher
education,
vocational
promotion
and
employment.
Above
these,
we
can
conclude
that
the
different
opinion
in
different
country
about
sexism
is
same.
They all piont out that there are unfair
treatments between man and woman. In the
late
1960s,
A
new
force
of
social
linguist
began
to
fouce
on
the
subject
of
sexism
in
language.
There
are
abundant
researches
of
word
order,
man
made
language,
semantic
degrogetion.

2.2 Feminism
“
Feminism
is
difficult
to
define
because
of
the
many
different
kinds
of
feminisms,
which
exist
today.
However
most
feminists
hold
a
belief
that
women
as
a
group
are
treated
oppressively
and
differently
from
men;
they
are
subject
to
personal
and
institutional
discrimination.(Chenhua,4)
The
feminsm
has
appeared
in
modern
times,
a
lot
of
famous
scholars
include
Mode
Feminism
into
three
stages,
Every
stages
has
its
own
characters.
First
was
from
1890-1920,
which
was
vivid
and
energetic
period,
the
gender discrimination to
the woman began to disappear, and a large number
of feminist
and a large number of
female revolutionary organization began to be
organized. Second
stage
was
from
1920
to
1960,
because
of
the
economic
depression,
feminism
organizations were on the decline. The
third stage is after the year of 1960, which was
the most radical period.(
Banner,23)
3. The Reflection
of Sexism in English vocabulary
3.1Morpheme
3.1.1Derivatives
“
In
English,
derivational
morphemes
are
mainly
prefixes
and
suffixes.
These
affixes
often change the
part of the stem. The affixes
thereby
help
us to
identify
relationships
within
words”
(Wang Rongpei,30) .There are a
lot of noun suffix used in English which
especially
refer
to
woman
.
“A
marked
and
unmarked
term
is
a
useful
concept
when
analyzing sexism. It is
a special kind of asymmetry. It is quite common in
English for
unmarked
’
terms
to
refer
to
males,
while
to
refer
to
a
female
,
the
terms
are
‘
marked
’
by adding a
suffix.
”
(Jinhong,1).
For example:
-ness(prince and princess
,host and hostess, lion and lioness, heir and
heiress,waitor
and
waitress,etc.),
–
ine(
hero
and
heroine),
–
ette(ushere
and
usherette
,maiore
and
majorette, etc.),
and -trix(executor and
executix, administrator and administratrix). And
also
a
lot
of
female
name
is
also
derived
from
man
’
s
name
which
ia
to
add
some
suffixes(-e , -le, -ine), such as
Louise , Jacqueline is derived from Louis and
Jacquel.
In
a
word,
It
is
an
phenomenon
in
English
vocabulary
that
the
act
of
feminine
suffixation is to create an unbalanced
gender pair, since it shows that the feminine noun
derives from the masculine word and
also reflects famale is of the secondary or
inferior
status.
3.1.2 Compound
There are
numbers of words compound by man- or
–
man in English vocabulary ,
for
instant : mankind , man-made,
hairman , eongressman , foreman , postman, workman
