One Friday morning,
before Michael was leaving for work he told his
wife that lie
had finally determined to
ask his boss for a salary raise. All day Michael
felt
nervous and anxious as he thought
about the upcoming showdown. What if Mr. Duncan
refused to grant his request? Michael
had worked so hard in the last 18
months and brought some great benefits to Braer
and Hopkins Advertising Agency. Of
course, he deserved a wage increase.
The
thought
of
walking
into
Mr
Duncan's
office
left
Michael
weak
in
the
knees.
Late in the afternoon he was finally
courageous enough to approach his superior.
To his delight and surprise, the ever-
frugal(

agreed to
give Michael a raise!
Michael arrived home that evening-despite breaking
ail city and state
limits-to a
beautiful table set with their best china, and
candles lit. His wife,
Cassie, had
prepared a delicate meal including his favourite
dishes. Immediately
he thought someone
from the office had tipped her off!
Next to his plate Michael
found a beautiful lettered note. It was from Isis
wife.
It
read:
my
love!
I
knew
you'd
get
the
raise!
I
prepared
this
dinner to show just how much I love
you. I am so proud of your
accomplishments
read it and stopped to
think about how sensitive and caring Cassie was.
After dinner,Michael was on his way to the kitchen
to get dessert when .he
observed that a
second card had slipped out of Cassie's pocket
onto the floor .He
bent forward to
pick, it up. It read:
do
deserve
one!
You
are
a
wonderful
provider,and
I
prepared
this
dinner
to
show
you
just how much I love you
even though you did not get the
increase.”
Suddenly tears swelled in Michael's
eyes. Total acceptance! Cassie's support
for him was not conditional upon his
success at work.
The fear of rejection
is often softened and we can undergo almost any
setback or
rejection when we know
someone Loves us regardless of our success or
failure.

Nowadays there is less and less contact
between the old and the young. There are
many reasons for this, but the result
is the same: increasing numbers of children
without
grandparents
and
old
people
who
have
no
contact
with
children.
And
more
old
people
who are lonely and feel use- less, along with more
and more families with
young
childre
n who desperately need more
support. It’s a major problem in many
societies.
That’s
why
intergenerational
programmes,
designed
to
bring
the
old
and
the
young together, are growing in
popularity all over the world, supported by UNESCO
and other local and international
organisations. There are examples of successful
initiatives
all
over
the
world.
Using
young
people
to
teach
IT
skills
to
older
people
is
one obvious example. Using old people as volunteer
assistants in schools is
another,
perhaps reading with children who need extra
attention.
One successful scheme in France is
combining a residential home for the
elderly with a creche/nursery school in
the same building. The children and the
residents
eat
lunch
together
and
share
activities
such
as
music,
painting,
gardening
and
caring
for
the
pets
which
the
residents
are
encouraged
to
keep.
In
the
afternoons,
the residents
enjoy reading or telling stones to the children
and, if a child is
feeling
sad
or
tired,
there
is
always
a
kind
lap
to
sit
on
and
a
cuddle
(
依偎
).
There
are trips out and
birthday parties too.
The advantages are
enormous for everyone concerned. The children are
happy
because they get a lot more
individual attention and respond well because
someone
has
lime,
for
them.
They
also
learn
that
old
people
are
not
different
or
frightening
in
any
way.
And
of
course,
they
see
illness
and
death
and
learn
to
accept
them.
The
residents are happy
because they feel useful and needed. They are more
active and
more interested in life when
the children are around and they take more
interest
in their appearance too. And
the staff are happy because they see an
improvement
in the physical and
psychological health of the residents and have an
army of
assistants to help with the
children.

about the scheme in France?

aspect does the scheme benefit the old?

The
Lifecycle of a T-shirt
We
all
probably
have
a
lot
of
T-shirts,
but
do
you
ever
stop
and
think
about
the
influence
of
a
T-
shirt
on
the
planet?
You’d
probably
be
surprised
to
learn
what's
involved in the lifecycle of just one
T-shirt.
There are 5 major stages: material,
production, shipping, use and disposal
The material stage
involves
farming,
irrigating,
fertilizing,
harvesting
and
ginning.
While
cotton
is
a natural fiber
(
纤维
)and not as harmful to
the environment as manmade fibers, it
still
takes
a
toll
in
the
material
and
production
stages.
Commercial
cotton
farming
uses
a
large
amount
of
water,
and
the
use
of
pesticides
(
杀虫剂
)is
widespread
across
the
globe,
especially
in
cotton
farming.
Studies
have
shown
that
farmers
spend
around
$$4.1 billion on
pesticides annually, of which 25% was spent on
cotton crops in the
US.
Once the
cotton is grown and harvested, so begins the
production stage:
spinning, knitting,
bleaching, dyeing, cutting, sewing,
etc.
——
these processes
also
use
a
great
deal
of
water
and
energy.
Commercial
dyes
and
bleaches
are
harmful
pollutants and can
eventually pollute groundwater.
After
the
T-shirt
is
produced,
it
enters
the
transportation
stage.
This
often
involves overseas shipping. Take a look
in your closet. Chances are that most of
your cotton
garments
(
衣服
)are
made
in China or
India.
Garments
can be shipped
via
plane,
ship
or
truck?,all
of
which
spill
CO
2
into
the
atmosphere.
Calculations
show
that
CO
2
emissions from light
trucks alone amount to 1.15 pounds per mile.
Once the T-shirt reaches the retail
market, it is purchased. This stage may seem
like the least
environmentally damaging part. But
consider the number of times you5ve washed and
dried
your
favorite
T-shirt.
Washing
machines
are
certainly
becoming
more
efficient.
However, the
average American household does 400 loads of
laundry per year, using
about 40
gallons of water per load. Such excessive water
use is combined with the
large amount
of energy used by dryers.
The final stage of life is
disposal. This releases harmful emissions, or
involves
a
landfill
where
cotton
takes
years
to
break
down.
Current
US
records
show
that
an
estimated
15%
of
clothes
and
shoes
are
recycled,
which
means
that
consumers
send a shocking
85% of these materials to landfills.
We
all need new clothes every once in a while, but
let’s all try to keep
in mind what goes
into the production of clothing... It has a real
impact on the
planet.
There are a
lot of things you can do to help reduce your
impact. Reuse and
recycle
clothes.
If
they're
too
worn
out
to
wear,
cut
them
up
and
use
them
as
cleaning
rags.
Donate them to charity or another organization
that recycles textiles. When
possible,
make an effort to buy organic cotton. Turn down
the thermostat on your
washer, and line
dry your clothes when the weather will allow it.
12
.The underlined phrase
“takes a toll” probably means “_______
”
water
a lot
of time
energy
a bad
effect
can learn from the passage that
in the US,_______ .
ides in cotton
farming cost over 4 billion dollars every year
2
emissions of
land transport amount to 1.15 pounds per mile
15% of the clothes and shoes are made
of materials that are recycled
16, 000
gallons of water is used annually by an average
family on laundry
can be inferred from
this passage?
production process may
affect water safety.
clothing cost is
relatively low in China and India.
clothes are buried because they are hard to break
down.
use stage is the least
environmentally harmful of the five stages.
is the purpose of this article?
encourage people to donate clothes to
charity.
promote eco-friendly actions
related to clothes.
persuade people to
purchase more organic cotton.
introduce the five stages in the lifecycle of
clothing.
