Sometimes
children do not do what their parents tell them to
do. When this happens,
a parent tries
to help the child to do the right thing. When this
does not work, the
parent
usually
punishes
the
child.
There are many things that a parent can do. One
thing that people have done is to
spank
(
打屁股
) the child. When a
parent spanks a child, they will use their hand or
a
hard object to strike them on their
bottom. This is meant to show the child that they
have done somet
hing wrong.
4 / 13
One parent remembers
being spanked when he was a child. His parents
used a wooden
spoon. When he spanked
his own children with his hand, he saw that he put
a red mark
on his child’s
le
g. He never did that again.
One problem with spanking is that it
teaches the child to hit someone when they do
not
like
what
the
other
person
is
doing.
Another
problem
with
spanking
is
that
the
parent
is
usually
angry
and
can
hit
the
child
too
hard.
Sometimes
parents
will
use
spanking
for everything and not try other ways to get the
child to do the right thing.
Many
parents
are not
sure of
what
to
do
instead
of
spanking. Some
pe
ople
think
that their
religion(
宗教
) tells them that
spanking is okay. Some think that the law
lets
them
do
it.
The
courts
(
法
院
)
say
that
parents
have
the
right
to
teach
their
children
how
to
behave.
Other things
should be tried before a parent decides to spank a
child. Telling the
child exactly what
is wanted from them can be one thing. Giving a
child more than one
choice
is
another
thing
that
can
be
tried.
Getting
down
to
the
child’s
level
and
taking
a
more
child-friendly
approach
(
方
法
)
can
help
as
well.
25. According to the
passage, when children do something wrong, one
thing that parents
usually do to punish
them is to ________.
A. strike them on
the bottom
C. teach them what to do
B. try to help them do the right thing
D. take them to court
26.
Which of the following is
NOT
the problem caused by
spanking?
A. It teaches the child to
hit others when they offend him or her.
B. The parent may get angry and hit the
child too hard.
C. Sometimes parents
may use spanking for everything.
D. It
makes parents try other ways to make the child do
right.
27. Which of the following
can best describe the writer’s attitude
towards spanking?
A.
favorable (
赞同的
)
C. interested
B. indifferent
(
不关心
)
D.
unfavorable
28. From this passage, we
can conclude that ________.
A. Good
children always do the right thing.
B.
Parents should try their best to avoid spanking
their children.
C. Parents have no
choice but to spank their children when they do
something wrong.
5 / 13
D.
Children can have more than one choice to avoid
being spanked.
C
Matt and his wife lived in
the country. Matt was very
stingy
and never wanted to
spend a penny. One day a fair came to
the nearby town.
“Let’s go to the
fair, Matt,” his wife said, “We haven’t been
anywhere for a
long time.”
Matt thought about this for a while. He
knew he would have to spend money at the
fair.
At last he said, “All
right, but I’m not going to spend much money.
We’ll
look at things, but we won’t buy
anything.”
They went to the
fair and looked at all the things to buy. Matt’s
wife wanted to
buy a hat only costing
$$28, but was ref
used. Later on, a comb
of $$5 at
tracted her
attention, but he would not let her
spend any money.
Then, in a nearby
field, they saw a small airplane.
“Fun
flight!” the notice said, “$$10 for 10
minutes.”
Matt had never
been in an airplane and he wanted to go on a fun
flight. However,
he
didn’t
want
to
pay
for
his
wife
either.
“I’ve
only
got
$$10,”
he
told
the
pilot.
“Can
my
wife
come
with
me
for
free?”
The
pilot
wasn’t
selling
many
tickets, so he said, “I’ll make a
bargain with you. If your wife doesn’t scream,
she can have a
free
flight.”
Matt agreed, and
got into the small airplane with his wife.
The pilot took off and made his
airplane do all kinds of things. At one moment it
was flying upside down.
When
the plane landed, the pilot said, “OK, your wife
didn’t make a sound. S
he
can
have her ride free.”
“Thank
you,”
Matt
said,
“it wasn’t
easy
for
her,
you
know,
especially
when
she fell
out.”
29. The
underlined word “
stingy”
in
Para.1 has the closest meaning with _________.
A. not honest to people
B.
not kind to others
C. not wanting to
spend money
30.
What did Matt’s wife do when flying?
D. not wanting to save money
A. She screamed all the time.
