The Old Man and the Sea
Introduction
The Old Man and
the Sea
written by Ernest Miller
Hemingway . Who was
an American
novelist, short-story writer, and journalist. The
Old Man and the
Sea is one of
Hemingway's most famous work and may very well
become one of
the
true
classics
of
this
generation.
It
played
a
great
part
in
his
winning
the
Pulizer Prize in 1953 and the 1954
Novel Prize for Literature and confirmed his
power
and
presence
in
the
literary
s
The
Old
Man
And
the
Sea
,
I
have read some of his
other works, such as
The Sun Also
Rises
, But The
Old Man
and the Sea
is the one that
left the deepest impression for me.
The novel is described an old fisherman
almost the sixty years old, when go
to
sea
and
fish
alone
once,
have
angled
to
a
big
fish,
but
can
not
draw.
After
tough
fisherman
and
fish
have
socialized
for
a
few
days,
just
find
this
is
a
big
Malin's
fish which exceeds several times of one's own
fishing boat, though know
perfectly
well that it is very difficult to win
,
does not give up yet. Because big
Malin
fish
fishlike
smell
of
wound
attract
odd
herds
of
shark
vie
for
the
food
again later, but the old man is still
unwilling to give up like this, stress the tight
encirclement finally , take the large
fish back to fishing port , let other fishmen
admire
it
endlessly.
This
book
gives
me
a
deep
impression
especially
the
description
about the man’s
braveness and
persistence.
In
Ernest
Hemingway’s
novel
,
this
is
only
simple
plot,
and
the
main
character is just an old man . However,
no battle can be more glorious , and no
story can be more appealing than it. We
can clearly see how he deals with the
spectacular
subject
of
the
struggle
between
man
and
nature
,
using
unique
language
style
,
beautiful writing
skills
,
vivid descriptions
and creatable symbols .

The Symbolism in the Works
2.1 The Definition of Symbolism
Symbolism
is
an
artistic
movement
in
the
late
19
th
century
that
tried
to
express
abstract
or
mystical
ideas
through
the
symbolic
use
of
images.
In
literature,
it
is
a
writing
style
of
use
something
to
stand
for
something
else
by
reasoning of relationship, association,
accident resemblance , or a visible sign of
something invisible.
As
a master in literature, Hemingway uses very simple
words and sentences
to write some opus,
which is his iceberg technique that he uses in his
work. He
believe as a good writer , he
didn't deed to reveal the action or characters
clearly ,
obscurity can give us the
aesthetic sence . So the words and sencences in
his work
are symbolic and suggestive.
That is to say, one need keep a close eye to read
his
works and read between the lines
deliberately.
2.2 Major
Symbols in
The Old Man and the Sea
There
are
many
symbols
in
this
story
,
such
as
the
old
man,
the
boy,
the
sea,the
shark,
the
marlin
and
etc.
This
paper
only
focuses
on
the
important
symbols and
analyse the deep meaning of them.
Many
people believe that the novel is about the life of
Hemingway himself .
Because some parts
of the story do relate to what Hemingway has
experoenced in
his life.
The
old man
—
Santiago is the
last tragic hero that Hemingway desecribe.
Being poor and unlucky , his fate is
sad, but he is not a man easily defeated. The
old
man's
tragic
fate
is
an
light
in
art
of
Hemingway
misfortune.
Hemingway
had
once
joined
in
the
Second
World
War
and
the
Spanish
War .
The
society
after
war is disarrayed and destitute . The fantastic
phenomenon of the war and
the society
brought deep spiritual injury to Hemingway , which
can be said that
