Countries also use animals as
symbols. From eagles to lions, many countries use
an animal to
show its national spirit
and character.
The image of an eagle is
on the US President's flag, and on the one-dollar
bill. The bald eagle
is a large,
powerful, brown bird with a white head and tail.
The US declared that the
eagle was its national bird in 1782. It was chosen
because of
long life, great strength,
and noble looks
But, one of the Founding
Fathers, Benjamin Franklin didn't agree with the
choice.

Franklin wanted the turkey as
the country's national bird.
If
Americans chose their national symbol
deliberately(
人为地
), the
symbol of England arose
out of history.
King Henry I (1068-1135) was a brave
warrior but also wise. He was the first English

Everyone knows
about the Australian kangaroo. Legend has it that
the kangaroo gets its name
from an
early meeting between local aborigines and white
settlers. When asked by the Europeans

The kangaroo is an individualistic
animal. Although it does gather in groups, the
kangaroo is
not a herd animal.
If a group is attacked, individuals run
off in different directions. Australians
think the kangaroo represents positive
values, such as individual responsibility and
pride.

Have you ever been frustrated
(

yourself after your mobile phone
battery runs out in the middle of a
call?
If yes, then here comes some good
news. Scientists are now perfecting a way to
recharge (
充
电
)
electrical equipment while on the move.
Researchers from the Netherlands,
France and Portugal announced last week that they
have
developed very thin solar panels
(
太阳能板
) that can be put on
clothes. They can also be added to
furniture and rooftops. They change
light from the sun into electricity.
In
about three years, you'll be able to wear a jacket
that will recharge your phone as you walk.
For camping fans, the development could
lead to a tent which charges batteries all day so
you can
have light or music at night.
The basic technology of wearable solar
panels is the same as that used for conventional
(
传统
的
) solar
panels. Pairs of sheets of semi-conducting silicon
(
半导体硅
) are linked together
to form
the panel.
But
scientists made them much thinner by using
different silicon. At one micro-metre, they
are the same thickness as photographic
film.

said
Gerrit
Kroesen, a physicist
in the Netherlands who led the team of scientists.
But
the
thin

are
not
as

ones.
While
some
solar
panels
now
operate at an efficiency of about 20
per cent, the new flexible
(

cent
efficient.
But
the
scientists
believe
that
this
is

for
a

But
the thinner panel is cheaper. An A4 sized panel
put onto the back of a jacket costs less
than US$$13. It could charge a cellphone
during a summer walk in the countryside. As long
as you
stay within range of the
transmitting masts (

that relay a call to the networks, phones
will never again run out of power.

There are two basic
ways to see growth: one as a product, the other as
a process. People
have generally viewed
personal growth as an external
(
外在的
) result or a product
that can easily
be identified and
measured
.
The worker who gets
a rise, the student whose grades improve, the
foreigner who learns a new
language
—
all these examples
of people who have measurable results
to show for their
efforts
.
By
contrast
(
对照
)
,
the
process
of
personal
growth
is
much
more
difficult
to
determine,
since it is a
journey and not the specific signposts or
landmarks along the way
.
The
process is not
the road itself, but the
attitudes, feelings people have , and their
caution or courage, as they meet
with
new experiences and unexpected
difficulties
.
In this
process, the journey never really
ends
;
there are always new
ways to experience the world, new ideas to try,
new challenges to accept
.
In order to grow, to travel new roads,
people need to have a willingness to take risks,
to face
the unknown, and to accept the
possibility that they may “fail” at
first
.
How we see ourselves
as
we try a new way of being is
necessary for our ability to
grow
.
Do we see ourselves as
quick and
curious? If so, we tend to
take more chances and be more open to unfamiliar
experiences
.
Do we
think we’re shy and indecisive? Then
our sense of fear can cause us to hesitate, to
move slowly,
and we think we are slow
to adapt (
适应
) change or that
we
’re not smart enough to deal with a
new
challenge
.
Then we are likely
to take a more passive role or not try at
all
.
These
feelings of insecurity (
不安全
)
and self-doubt are both unavoidable and necessary
if
we are to change and
grow
.
If we protect ourselves
too much, then we stop
growing
.
We become
trapped inside a shell of our own
making
.

Bored at school now?
How do you think it will
look in the future? Last week, about 600
teenagers in the U.S. imagined a future
changed by technology in which their lessons are
taught by
robots and they learn about
celebrities and alien languages.
According to a survey
published last week by the
U.S. Internet service provider American

Most believe there will still be
schools to go to, but that technology will play an
increasingly
important role in
learning. The 600 teens surveyed think there will
still be teachers, but 37 percent
imagine them to be robots. Some 24

My University Days
I passed all the other courses that I
took at my University, but I could never pass
botany. This
was because all botany
students had to spend several hours a week in a
laboratory looking through
a microscope
at plant cells and I could never see through a
microscope. This used to enrage my
instructor. He would wander around the
laboratory, pleased with the progress all the
students were
making in drawing the
structure of flower cells, until he came to me.
“I
can’t
see
anything,”
I
would
say.
He
would
begin
patiently
enough,
explaining
how
everybody can see through a microscope,
but he would always end up in a fury claiming I
was just
pretending
not
to
see
it.
“Try
it
just
once
again,”
he’d
say,
and
I
would
put
my
eye
to
the
microscope and see nothing, except now
and then a milky stuff. “I
see what
looks like a lot of
milk.” I would tell
him. This, he claimed, was the result of my not
having adjusted the microsc
ope
properly, so he would readjust it for
me. And I would look again and see milk.
I finally had to stay in the class for
another year. The professor had come back from
vacation,
brown as a berry, and eager
to explain cell-
structure again.
“Well,” he said to me, cheerily, “we’re
going to see cells this time, aren’t
we?” “Yes, sir,” I said. But of course, I didn’t
see anything.
“We’ll try it,”
the professor said grimly, “with every adjustment
of the microscope known to
man.
By
god,
I’ll
arrange
this
glass
so
that
you
see
cells
through
it
or
I’ll
give
up
teaching.”
I
could see he was beginning to quiver
all over.”
So
we
tried
it
with
every
adjustment
known
to
man.
Finally,
to
my
great
pleasure
and
amazement., I saw flecks, specks and
dots. These I hastily drew. The instructor, noting
my activity,
came
towards
me,
with
a
smile
on
his
lips.
He
looked
at
my
drawing,
“What’s
that
?
“he
demanded. “That’s what I saw,” I said.
“No, you didn’t!” he shouted, and he bent over and
looked
into
the
microscope.
“That’s
your
eye!”
he
shouted.

all around Australian coast. They often lie in
rock pools close to shore. The blue ringed
octopus is usually a dull colour but it
shows its bright blue rings when it is in danger.

When people get
bacteria on their hands

they
can infect themselves by touching their

or

The experts say the easiest way to
catch a cold is to touch your nose or eyes after
someone
nearby has sneezed or
coughed
.
Another way to
become sick is to eat food prepared by someone
whose hands were not clean.
The experts say that hand--washing is
especially important before and after preparing
food,
before eating and after using the
toilet. People should wash their hands after
handling animals or
animal
waste
,
and after cleaning a
baby. The experts say it is also a good idea to
wash your hands
after handling money
and after sneezing or coughing. And it is
important to wash your hands often
when
someone in your home is sick. The experts say the
most effective way to wash your hands is
to rub them together while using soap

special
antibacterial
soap.

can cause damage to
the lungs of older
people, babies and people with respiratory
problems.

Have you ever been
frustrated when left talking to yourself after
your mobile phone battery
runs out in
the middle of a call?
If
yes,
then
here
comes
some
good
news.
Scientists
are
now
perfecting
a
way
to
recharge
electrical equipment while on the move.
Researchers from the Netherlands,
France and Portugal announced last week that they
have
developed very thin solar panels
(
太阳能板
) that can be put on
clothes. They can also be added to
furniture and rooftops. They change
light from the sun into electricity.
In
about three years, you'll be able to wear a jacket
that will recharge your phone as you walk.
For camping fans, the development could
lead to a tent which charges batteries all day so
you can
have light or music at night.
The basic technology of wearable solar
panels is the same as that used for conventional
(
传统
的
) solar
panels. Pairs of sheets of semi-conducting silicon
(
半导体硅
) are linked together
to form
the panel.
But
scientists made them much thinner by using
different silicon. At one micro-metre, they
are the same thickness as photographic
film.
technology
will

it
easier
for
people

said
Gerrit
Kroesen, a physicist
in the Netherlands who led the team of scientists.
But
the
thin
panels
are
not
as
efficient
as
the
thicker
ones.
While
some
solar
panels
now
operate at an efficiency of about 20
per cent, the new flexible
(
柔韧的
) panels are only 7 per
cent
efficient.
But
the
scientists
believe
that
this
is
worth
accepting
for
a
stronger
and
more
useful
panel.
But
the thinner panel is cheaper. An A4 sized panel
put onto the back of a jacket costs less
than US$$13. It could charge a cell
phone during a summer walk in the countryside. As
long as you
stay within range of the
transmitting masts (
发射天线
)
that relay a call to the networks, phones
will never again run out of power.

There are two types of people in the
world. Although they have equal degree of health
and
wealth
and
other
comforts
of
life,
one
becomes
happy,
while
the
other
becomes
unhappy.
This
arises
from
the
different
ways
in
which
they
consider
things,
persons,
events
and
the
resulting
effects upon their minds.
People
who
are
to
be
happy
fix
their
attention
on
the
convenience
of
things:
the
pleasant
parts
of
conversation,
the
well
prepared
dishes,
the
goodness
of
the
wine
and
the
fine
weather.
They
enjoy
all
the
cheerful
things.
Those
who
are
to
be
unhappy
think
and
speak
only
of
the
opposite
things.
Therefore,
they
are
continually
dissatisfied.
By
their
remarks,
they
sour
the
pleasure of society, offend(hurt) many
people, and make themselves disagreeable
everywhere. If
this turn of mind was
founded in nature, such unhappy persons would be
the more to be pitied.
The intention of
criticizing and being disliked is perhaps taken up
by imitation.
It
grows into
a
habit, unknown to its possessors. The
habit may be strong, but it may be cured when
those who
have
it
realize
its
bad
effects
on
their
interests
and
tastes.
I
hope
this
little
warning
may
be
of
service to them, and help
them change this habit.
Though
in
fact
it
is
chiefly
an
act
of
the
imagination,
it
has
serious
results
in
life
since
it
brings
on deep sorrow and bad luck. Those people offend
many others; nobody loves them, and no
one
treats
them
with
more
than
the
most
common
politeness
and
respect.
This
frequently
puts
them
in
bad
temper
and
draws
them
into
arguments.
If
they
aim
at
getting
some
advantages
in
social position or fortune, nobody
wishes them success. Nor will anyone start a step
or speak a
word to favor their hopes.
If they bring on themselves
public
objections, no one will defend or
excuse
them,
and
many
will
join
to
criticize
their
wrong
doings.
These
should
change
this
bad
habit
and
be
pleased
with
what
is
pleasing,
without
worrying
needlessly
about
themselves
and
others. If they do not,
it will be good for others to avoid any contact
with them. Otherwise, it can
be
disagreeable and sometimes very inconvenient,
especially when one becomes mixed up in their
quarrels.

The black cat is a sign

Halloween began in the
Mediaeval-years.
A festival was celebrated in Rome and people
walked in parades with masks and
costumes. The people carved faces into
pumpkins and lit them with a candle inside. These
were
thought of as to ward off all the
evil and bad spirits. That is why people sell
pumpkins everywhere
during
the
Halloween
season.
Soon

the

this
festival
evolved
into
what

call

Every year in New York
City, there is a huge parade, there are floats and
people walk around
in costumes. Some
are animal featured, some are scary and spooky

funny

Hackers, those
people who illegally enter systems, may alter or
delete information, steal private
information, or spread viruses that can
damage or destroy files. But how exactly can a
hacker get
into a system to do theses
things?
Most hackers use information
called protocols (
协议
) that
are built into computer software.
These
protocols allow computers to interact with one
another. Protocols are sort of like computer
police
officers.
When
a
computer
connects
to
another
system,
the
protocols
check
to
see
if
the
access is
valid. The protocols can also determine how much
information can be shred between the
two systems. Hackers can manipulate
(
操纵
) the protocols to get
unlimited access to a computer
system.
In
fact,
just
the
act
of
entering
a
computer
network
is
considered
hacking.
This
is
commonly
called
passive
hacking.
Passive
hackers
get

Hackers
that
do
damage
to
a
system
by
releasing viruses or
altering, deleting, or taking information are
known as active hackers they are,
by
far, the more dangerous of the two.
The
easiest way to protect a system is with a good
password. Long and unusual passwords
are
harder
for
hackers
to
guess.
For
even
greater
security,
some
online
services
now
use
“
password-
plus
”
systems. In this case,
users first put in a password and then put in a
second code
that changes after the user
accesses the site. Users have special cards or
devices that show them
the new code to
use the next time. So if a hacker steals the
password, they won
’
t have
the code. Or
if the hacker somehow gets
the code, they still don

t
know the password.

correct use of this
money? There are two viewpoints about the pocket
money. Some people think
that giving
children pocket money will make them become
luxurious. Others think that will not
lead to such disadvantage. In my
opinion, both of them are partially reasonable.
Someone believes
that giving children
pocket money really has many advantages. With
pocket money, children can
buy their
daily necessities such as pencils, little toys,
and snack food they like. It will give children
a certain freedom to select what they
want, make them aware rules of the equivalent
exchange.
Since time to parents is very
precious, giving pocket money to children help
them to save time
spent
in
shopping,
but
used
in
busy
working
and
earning
money.
Others
insist
that
there
are
undoubtedly
some
disadvantages
in
spending
pocket
money.
First,
young
children
do
not
know
how to
use pocket money appropriately, they possibly
consume all the money to buy expensive
merchandise that they like, and then
ask for extra money from their parents. Some
parents cosset
their children, and
always give them a large amount of pocket money.
Such conditions will make
children
become more and more prodigal. Second, since
adults do not supervise the procedure of
shopping, children could probably buy
something that is not suitable for their age, such
as adult
magazines. Judging these two
viewpoints above-mentioned, I think that parents
should give their
children a limited
amount of pocket money. There are some
preconditions: the amount of pocket
money
must
be
finite;
the
parents
should
instruct
their
children
how
to
use
the
pocket
money
moderately and what is
suitable to them; for a costly merchandise,
parents themselves should take
children
to buy it. With these preconditions, pocket money
will do no harm to their children.

Americans often say that there are only
two things a person can be sure of in life: death
and
taxes. Many people feel that the
United States has the worst taxes in the world.
Taxes are the money that people pay to
support their government. There are generally
three
levels of government in the
United States: federal, states, and city;
therefore, there are three types
of
taxes.
Salaried people who earn more
than four thousand dollars per year must pay a
certain part of
their salaries to the
federal government, and the money is used to fund
state workforce agencies.
The
percentage varies for different people. It depends
on their salaries. The federal government
has
two-level
income
tax:
that
is,
15
or
28
percent.
$$17,850
is
the
cut
off.
The
tax
rate
is
15
percent below $$17,850 and
28 percent above.
The
second
tax
is
for
the
state
government:
New
York,
California,
or
any
of
the
other
forty-
eight states, including income tax and sales tax.
Some states have an income tax similar to
that of the federal government. Of
course, the percentage for the state tax is lower,
varying from
6% to 12%. Other states
have a sales tax, which is a percentage charge to
any item which people
buy in the state.
Some states use income tax and sales tax to raise
their revenues.
The third tax is for
the city. This tax comes in two forms: One is
property tax (residents who
own a house
have to pay taxes on it). The other is excise tax,
which is collected on vehicles in a
city. The cities use this money for
education, police, public works, etc.
Since Americans pay such high taxes,
they often feel that they are working one day
each.

So
Pearson
wants a holiday for
his students which mixes studying the language
with plenty of free time to
practice
sailing.
John
has a class of eleven year-
olds who are
crazy about sport. He’d like a course which
organizes a complete programme
including all kinds of sports, meal sand
entertainments.
Jackson’s students are all from rich
families. They are learning French and hope to
have a trip
in French-speaking country.
Besides, they hope to have a pleasant and
comfortable trip and the
money is no
problem.
Smith teaches German to some
boy students. They are different not only in age
but also in
level. So Smith would like
to find a place where different levels of students
can be treated in
different ways.

Why must we pay taxes? The
answer is that the government needs money for many
things,
for example, to pay its
soldiers, sailors and airmen, to build roads,
bridges, offices, schools, etc,
and to
buy goods from abroad; and only the people of the
country can supply the money.
One of the most important taxes is
income-tax which a person pays according to the
amount
of his income, whether he is a
merchant, a doctor, a lawyer, a shopkeeper, a
miner or anything else.
T
his
is called a “direct” tax, because it is paid in
money directly to the government.
Another tax is paid on goods such as
watches, jewelry, new clothes, tobacco, wine, etc,
when
they are brought into a country.
Such a tax is paid as part of the price of these
goods if they are
late sold in shops.
We call it “indirect” tax, because it is paid
indirectly through the shopkeepers.
People usually complain about having to
pay taxes, but they forget that the money is spent
on
things that they and their families
need. We need policemen to catch thieves, to see
that men obey
the laws, to direct
traffic, etc, and they must be paid what they
earn; children need education and
there
must be schools and teachers; we want our streets
to be kept clean, and the wages of men
who do this kind of work have to be
paid. Above all, the country must always be ready
to defend
itself against attacking
enemies, and we can’t have an army without paying
for
it. Besides, if a
country wants to develop, there are
many other things to do…
Taxes,
therefore,
cannot
be
avoided.

Bao Yunlu, a Senior 2

Province, often dreams
of having an

homework, share my feelings and take
care of me,” he said.
But

Li

discussion when he told newspapers there would be
no change to the current

The

Now
China

one-third of the total. The policy has

Bao agreed that being an
only child has had an effec

personality. “We are less tolerant

considerate (

schoolmates who have brothers or sisters,” he
said.
But others don’t
agree. “I don’t feel the difference between me and

quarrelling with their brothers or sisters. I feel
lucky to have nobody to steal my
belongings,” said Bai Yijing, a Senior 1 girl from

The art
of growing
dwarf
(short)
trees,
or
“bonsai”
as
their
Japanese
planters
call
them,
is
increasing in popularity in the United
States. Growing bonsai can make a fascinating
hobby for
anyone who enjoys plants and
creating beautiful effects with them. However, how
can we meet
the goal of making such a
kind of art? This maybe is the problem for many of
us.
There are, in fact, four important
guidelines to follow in growing bonsai. First, one
must be
careful in choosing the type of
tree. Not all species of trees can be made into
bonsai, since the
growing conditions
are unusual.
Second, one must be
careful in choosing the size of the container the
bonsai will be in. This is
necessary
because the major gr
owth of bonsai is
kept confined to the tree’s trunk and leaves, not
its root system.
Another
thing the bonsai-grower must do is to trim
(
修整
) the roots and branches
of the tree
periodically
(
定期地
). Unless this is done,
the plants will look unnatural. The Japanese ideal
for
bonsai is not to have the proper
proportions and will have trees which are just
like normal trees in
everything, but in
small size.
The last thing
one must do is to be careful to keep the miniature
(small) tree well-watered, or
it will
die.
As one can see from
above, the art of bonsai-growing is one which
requires a certain amount
of time and
effort. The satisfactions that growing bonsai
brings can be great, however.
Imagine
having such a tree in your living room
and passing it down through several generations of
your
family. That is exactly what
bonsai-growing is all about: establishing a
tradition of beauty which
lasts for
years and years and is a symbol of the beauties of
the natural world.

Modbury, about 225 miles

local people to hand

will be sent for traveling.
The Modbury ban was the idea of Rebecca

Parents
Warned on Use of Cough and Cold Medicines in
Children
How safe and
effective is the use of cough and cold medicines
in children? Some doctors say
cough and
cold products do not work in children, and they
worry about possible risks. F.D.A.
officials say that some reports of
problems appear to be the result of giving too
much medicine to
children. This may
lead to serious and life-threatening side effects,
especially in children aged two
and
younger.
The products are sold without
the need for a doctor's approval. Yet cough and
cold medicines
can be harmful if people
take them more often or in greater amounts than
they should. There is a
risk, for
example, in taking more than one product
containing the same active chemicals.
Too much cold medicines may affect the
heart. Some medicines have also been linked to
high blood pressure and strokes.
Products for children may
contain medicines that were approved many years
ago
based on
studies in
adults. The drug approval process has changed
since then.
F.D.A.
officials have this warning for parents: Do not
use cough and cold products in
children
under two years of age unless a health care
provider tells you to.
The
officials also have other advice. For example,
children should never be given medicines
that are meant for adults. Cough and
cold medicines are sold in different strengths.
Ask a medical
professional if you are
not sure about the right product for a child.
If a child is being given
other medicines, the child's health care provider
should approve their
combined use.
Read all the information and warnings
provided with a drug and carefully follow the
directions for use.
For liquid products, use the dropper or
other measuring device that comes with the
medicine
or buy the correct one at a
drug store. Do not use household spoons; they
could provide the wrong
amount of
medicine.
The F.D.A points
out that children get better with time and that
cough and cold medicines
