Banking began
thousands of years ago in early civilization. The
first bankers were moneychangers and they took
foreign
money from travelers and gave
them local coins. They carried the money in
special boxes called strong boxes to protect it
from robbers. Later, people brought
their money to money changers for protection.
Eventually, money changers loaned
money
to people and charge them interest.
The
early Italian bankers worked outdoors in the
street. They used a bench for business. In fact,
the modern word “bank”
comes from an
Italian word meaning “bench”. By the 16th century
banks were popular here and there in Europe. They
were
family business. King and other
rich people borrowed some money from bankers.
In the next century British were first
to make paper money. They gave their customers
paper notes in exchange for their gold
and silver. People liked the paper
notes a lot, because they are easy to carry. After
a while, people accepted bank notes as
money. The first successful bank in the
United States opened in Philadelphia in 1772.
Today there are about 14,000 banks in
the USA.

Last August,
Joe and Mary Mahoney began looking at colleges for
their 17-year-old daughter, Maureen. With a
checklist
of criteria in hand, the
Dallas family looked around the country visiting
half a dozen schools. They sought a university
that
offered the teenager’s intended
major, one located near a large city, and a campus
where their daughter would be safe. “The
safety issue is a big one,” says Joe
Mahoney, who quickly discovered he wasn’t alone in
his worries. On campus tours other
parents voiced similar concerns, and
the same question was always asked : what about
crime? But when college officials
always gave the same answer
——“That’s not a problem here,”
——
Mahoney began to feel uneasy.
“No crime whatsoever?” comments Mahoney
today. “ I just don’t buy it.” Nor should he. In
1999 the U.S. Department of
education
had reports of nearly 400,000 serious crimes on or
around our campuses. “Parents need to understand
that times
have changed since they went
to college,” says David Nichols, author of
Creating a Safe Campus. “Campus crime mirrors the
rest of the
n
ation.”
But
getting accurate information isn’t easy. Colleges
must report crime
statistics(
统计数字
)by law, but
some hold back for
fear of bad
publicity, leaving the honest ones looking
dangerous. “The truth may not always be serious,”
warms S. Daniel
Carter o
f
Security on Campus, Inc., the nation’s leading
campus safety watchdog group.
To help concerned parents, Carter
promised to visit campuses and talk to experts
around the country to find out major crime
issues and effective solutions.

Many people who
work in London prefer to live outside it, and to
go in to their offices or schools every day by
train, car
or bus, even though this
means they have to get up early in the morning and
reach home late in the evening.
One advantage of living
outside London is that houses are cheaper. Even a
small flat in London without a garden costs quite
a
lot to rent. With the same money, one
can get a little house in the country with a
garden of one’s own.
Then, in the country one can rest from
the noise and hurry of the town. Even though one
has to get up earlier and spend more
time in trains or buses, one can sleep
better at night and during weekends and on summer
evenings, one can enjoy the fresh,
clean air of the country. If one likes
gardens, one can spend one’s fr
ee time
digging, planting, watering and doing the hundred
and one other jobs which are needed in
a garden. Then, when the flowers and vegetables
come up, one has the reward of one
who
has shared the secret of Nature.
Some people, however, take
no interest in country things: for them, happiness
lies in the town, with its cinemas and theatres,
beautiful shops and busy streets,
dance-halls and restaurants. Such people would
feel that their life was not worth living if
they had to live it outside London. An
o
ccasional walk in one of the parks and
a fortnight’s (two weeks) visit to the sea every
summer is all the country they want:
the rest they are quite prepared to leave to those
who are glad to get away from London
every night.
