The

most

important

day

I

remember

in

all

my

life

is

the

one

on

which

my

teacher,

Anne

Mansfield

Sullivan,

came

to

me.

I

am

filled

with

wonder

when

I

consider

the

immeasurable

contrasts between the two lives which it connects. It was the third of March, 1887, three months

before I was seven years old.

On the afternoon of that eventful day, I stood on the porch, dumb, expectant. I guessed vaguely

from

my mother’s s

igns and from the hurrying to and fro in the house that something unusual was

about to happen, so I went to the door and waited on the steps. The afternoon sun penetrated the

mass

of

honeysuckle

that

covered

the

porch,

and

fell

on

my

upturned

face.

My

fingers

lingered

almost unconsciously on the familiar leaves and blossoms which had just come forth to greet the

sweet Southern spring. I did not know what the future held of marvel or surprise for me, Anger and

bitterness

had

prey

upon

me

continually

for

weeks

and

a

deep

languor

had

succeeded

this

passionate struggle.

Advice to Young Men

Whenever

you possibly

can, do good to

those who need it. Never tell

your neighbor to

wait

until tomorrow if you can help him now. Don’t plan anything that will hurt your neighbor; he lives

be

side you, trusting you. Don’t argue with someone for no reason when he has never done you any

harm. Don’t be jealous of violent people or decide to act as they do, because the Lord hates people

who do evil, but he takes righteous men into his confidence. The Lord puts a curse on the homes of

the wicked men, but blesses the homes of the righteous. He has no use for conceited people, but

shows favor to those who are humble. Wise men will gain an honorable reputation, but stupid men

will only add to their own disgrace.

Ambition

When I was a boy, there was but one permanent

ambition among my comrades in our village

Mississippi

steamboatman.

transient

ambitions of other sorts, but they were only transient. When a circus came and went, it left us all

burning to become clowns; the first Negro minstrel show that ever came to our section left us all
