When he was nine years old, an American
boy called Milo Cress had a question: How many
plastic
straws
(
吸管
)do Americans use every
day?
He quickly learned
there wasn't a simple answer. The boy tried to
find it out himself. Through
lots of
research, Cress found out that Americans use about
500 million straws every day. In hopes of
cutting down plastic waste, he founded
the Be Straw Free project in 2011.
Cress
started
the
project
in
his
hometown
Burlington.
Vermont.
He
asked
a
local
restaurant
to
stop
offering straws with
every drink order. It was a simple change.
However, it would save money. And by
doing that, the restaurant would cut
down on its straw use by 50 percent.
For the year that followed, Cress tried
to spread his project across the United States.
More and
more restaurants agreed to
join. They stop providing the customer with a
straw unless he or she asks
for one.
Last April, Seattle became the first American city
to completely ban plastic straws.
After his project became popular, Cress
took his findings on the road. He has spoken to
tens of
thousands of students around
the world. He wants to encourage more people to
say no to plastic straws.
I, as a kid, could make a
difference, too.

I had a summer camp with my
classmates for a week last year.
Early in the morning, we
gathered(
聚集
) at the bus
station. After saying goodbye to our parents,
we got on the buses. It took us more
than two hours to arrive at the
campground.
We got off the
buses happily. Laughing and shouting, we jumped
and ran all over the place. It was
the
first time for us to be away from the parents.
Some of us started to feel
homesick(
想家
). However,
when the night party and dances began,
we felt excited again.
The
next day, everybody rushed to the boating class,
hoping to be at the head of the others. At
first, my friends and I worked hard,
but the boat wouldn't listen to us and kept going
round and round.
Then the teacher
taught us how to work together. After many tries,
we did much better.
Swimming
class was my favourite. It was about the hottest
time of a day and the best time to stay
in the cool water. The swimming teacher
was a funny man, and during the class he often
made us laugh
happily. During the week
I learned a lot of new things and made many new
friends. I also learned how
to take

Jeans have
become one piece of clothing worn by the most
people in the world.
Everybody wears
them, from the farmer to the lawyer and from
models to housewives. But why have jeans
become so
popular
?
You'll get many
answers. For some people they look cool, for
others jeans are just
comfortable.
Jeans were first stronger
trousers made for farm workers in the states of
the American west. In
the eastern part
of the US jeans were hardly worn at all. They were
connected with farm people and the
workers. So the rich wouldn't like to
wear them.
It was James
Dean and Marlon Brando that made them popular in
movies and everyone started to wear

them. They were a symbol of the
rebellion
of young people
during the 1950s and 1960s. So these new
trousers were not allowed in American
schools and sometimes in theatres and cinemas. As
time went on
,
jeans became
more acceptable. American people in Europe and
Japan often wore them when they were not
on
duty
to
show
that
they
were
Americans.
The
trousers
showed
the
world
a
happier
way
of
life,
something
that people
needed, especially after what they had gone
through in World War II.
Jeans had other advantages as well.
They didn't need to be washed as often as other
trousers and
women didn't need to iron
them. This became more important as more and more
women started working and
had less time
for housework.
Today jeans
are an important part of our lives. They are
always washed a few times before they
are sold to give them a faded
look.

If the
only sports you do are dancing your fingers across
your keyboard, you could be in serious
danger of more than just becoming
overweight and out of shape.
Do you often feel sleepy, like
something is weighing down on your head? Do you
feel forgetful?
Do you sometimes feel
uncomfortable up and down your neck and lower
back, and you can't explain why?
Do you
get sick often? It could be radiation
(
辐射
) from your computer
causing it. If you spend three
hours or
more a day in front of a computer (and at this
point, who doesn't?), you are more easily harmed
by the hazards.
We have got
so used to using
computers
that
we often
neglect to
think of them as dangerous
sources
of harmful radiation. A safe
amount of radiation is 25 V/m (Volts/meter). Do
you want to guess how much
our personal
computers give off?
Keyboard: 1000 V/m
Mouse: 450 V/m
Monitor: 218V/m
CPU: 170V/m
Notebook computers: 2,500
V/m
Ways of Protect Yourself
from Harmful Computer Radiation
1 Decorate your desk with cactus
plants, they take in radiation.
2 Drink two to three cups of green tea
a day and eat an orange daily. The vitamins in tea
leaves
and oranges protect us from
radiation and keep our eyes healthy as
well.
3Use a screen filter
for your monitor.
4 Avoid
having metal objects nearby on your
desk.
5 Put the back of the
computer to the wall. Most of the radiation comes
off the back.
6 Keep your
monitor at least 50cm away from your face. 7. Keep
your computer rooms ventilated .
8Eat healthily-----especially fruits
and vegetables.
9 Don't fall
asleep on your computer. Turn it off if you have
to rest nearby.
The ways
above are useful, why not have a try at
once?
