Nathaniel Hawthorne is one of the most

19th century. His novel The Scarlet Letter
published

1850

literature. In this novel Hawthorne sets his
story

Boston
under
the
rule
of
puritan
magistrates.
According
to

theories
of
feminist
criticism,
Hawthorne's
feminism consciousness prompted him to shape a
rebellion
in the Scarlet letter to
women. In the Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne described
this consciousness into his villains,
the heroine's inner world. Hawthorne
revealed
Hester's
marginalized
status,
reflected
female
consciousness
of
the
widespread
in
the
Puritan
society.
Hawthorne
also
criticized
that
origin from the
patriarchal consciousness of unequal treatment of
women.
To
restore
a
woman's
subjectivity,
Hawthorne
wrote
his
story
and
description of the hero
and heroine to destroy the dual opposite ideas in
the patriarchal culture.
