Over the past five years, researchers
in artificial intelligence have become the rock
stars of the
technology world. A branch
of AI known as deep learning, has proven so useful
that skilled operators can
command six-
figure salaries to build software for Amazon,
Apple, Facebook and Google. The top names can earn
over $$1 million a year.
The
traditional way to get these jobs has been a
Doctor’s degree in computer science from one of
America’s
top universities. Earning one
takes years and requires a person who can be
devoted to study, which is rare among
normal people. Moreover, graduate
students are regularly attracted away from their
studies by various high-paid
jobs.
4
That is
changing. Last month , an education non-profit
based in San Francisco, kicked off the third year
of its course in deep learning. Since
its beginning it has attracted more than 100,000
students from India to Nigeria.
The
course comes w
ith a simple idea: there
is no need to spend years obtaining a Doctor’s
degree in order to
practise deep
learning. ’s course can be completed in just seven
weeks.
For example, a
graduate from ’s first year, Sara Hooker, was
hired into Google’
s highly competitive
AI
residency programme after finishing
the course, having never worked on deep learning
before. She is now a
founding member of
Google’s new AI research office in Accra, Ghana,
the firm’s first in Africa.
To make it accessible to anyone who
wants to learn how to build AI software, Jeremy
Howard, who founded
with Rachel
Thomas, a mathematician, says middle school
mathematics is enough. is not the only
A
.
I. programme.
AI4ALL, another non-profit organization, founded
by leading technologists including Dr. Fei-Fei Li,
works to bring AI education to
schoolchildren that would otherwise not have
access to it.
Howard’s ambitions run
deeper than just dealing with the shortage in the
AI labour market. His aim is to
spread
deep learning into many hands, so that it may be
applied in as many fields as possible. The
ambition, says
Mr Howard, is for AI
training software to become as easy to use and
common as sending an email on a smart
phone.

Of all the planets, none has captured
the world's imagination like Mars. Its reddish
colour and changes in
brightness over
time make the planet an unforgettable sight.
In Cosmos, the television
science series from the 1980s, scientist Carl
Sagan talked about some traditional
ideas about Mars. Some of these ideas
are from the English science fiction writer H. G.
Well's The War of the
Worlds. Others
are from the mistaken science of Percival Lowell,
the American astronomer who believed
intelligent beings lived on Mars. Wells
described Martians as threatening. Lowell imagined
them as the hopeful
engineers of great
works. Carl Sagan said that both ideas influenced
the public deeply.
Today,
Mars continues to excite
humans
—
not as the object of
science fiction but of scientific study. Space
scientists have collected a wealth of
information from spacecrafts that have orbited,
landed on and dug into the
Martian
surface.
The Smithsonian's
Allison and Alycia from Silver Spring,
Maryland, brought their children, Grace, Sam, Ryan
and Emma. They heard
about Mars and its
geology from experts. They could see a test
version of the Viking landers that reached Mars in
July of 1976. They also saw
meteorites
known to have come from the
red, or reddish planet. Eight-year-old
(陨星)
Sam learned that the
ancient description of Mars as red is not exactly
right. He said, “It's actually orangish more
than red and it's also kind of brown,
too.” Emma is six. She learned about the volcanic
activity that has shap
ed the
surface of Mars. She said, “The closest
thing to Mars—
the stuff
—is
from volcanoes mostly.”
“Mars Day” offered Allison and Alycia's
children a chance to learn more about a world that
they are very
likely to set foot on
within their lifetimes.

There is an English saying that says,
“Let Sleeping Dogs Lie.” It means not
br
inging up an old problem.
Researchers in Hungary have found
another reason to let dogs keep on sleeping. It
seems the animals are learning
while
they sleep.
The Hungarian
researchers placed tools on the dogs’ heads to
know about electrical activity in th
e
brain. The
brain activity, called sleep
spindles(
梭状波
), takes place
in human beings, and has been connected with
learning.
The researchers hope to
understand how the dogs’ ability to learn and
remember changes as they get older. The
study may help them understand how
human brains change as we age.
The
researchers found differences between male and
female dogs. Iotchey, a researcher, says the
females
appeared much better at
learning new things. Female dogs have about twice
as many spindles per minute as male
9
dogs, they also happen to
be the better learners, and they memorize the task
much better. But it was harder for all
the older dogs to remember things,
especially when several things were happening at
the same time.
DoraSzabo also studies
sleep spindles. Szabo is a neuroscientist in a
university in Budapest. She says the older
dogs have fewer spindles and are easily
cheated. “If you first hide the reward into one
bowl, then in another and
in another,
they get lost after a while. So their performance
is going down, and they are getting poor in
solving
new problems.”
Researchers hope the study will not
only help understanding of learning ability and
memory changes in dogs,
but also the
aging of humans. Senior Researcher EnikoKubinyi
adds that the aging dogs suffer from the same
problems as humans who are aging.
“Among very old dogs, up to two thirds of them
show signs of
dementia(
痴
呆
), and
this dementia is really very similar to that of
humans, so we could use dog as a natural model of
human
aging.”
