Task2

Art classes, like painting and drawing are as important as other subject, should be

compulsory subject in high school. To what extant do you agree or disagree?

~

Nowadays, many people contemplate whether art classes should be compulsory courses of high

school. I am convinced that it is absolutely necessary to make this idea come true as soon as

possible.

Admittedly, the relatively high cost of art education renders it difficult to be prevalently

compulsory.

Take painting for instance. Due to the fact that there are various kinds of painting classes, the

expenses like pigment, paintbrushes and painting paper may pose some financial burden to family

where money is tight. Besides, the particular requirements of the teaching environment may

further add to the overall costs of aesthetic education, making it more unaffordable.

Yet, the situation can be alleviated by increasing national subsidies or the lowering the expectation

of constructing a fancy studio.

Meanwhile, the merits of aesthetic education outweigh its drawback since students can have

access to a wide range of knowledge through appreciating these artworks in class.

exemplification

For example, compared with the limited narration in history book, one of the masterpieces of

Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci, The Last Supper, displays a scene of religion in a more vivid and

profound way.

Art classes provide students with another opportunity to think and these classes are significantly

complementary to some core classes such as math and science.

Additionally, the underlying merits of attending art classes will benefit the students in the long run,

which are no less than those of studying some core subjects.

The abilities like to be focused, to be detail-oriented and to be persistent will be conducive to

students' comprehensive ability and career development as well.

~

In conclusion, aesthetic education should be made compulsory, for it helps deepen students'

acquisition, complement other subjects and contributes to their overall competence and career

progress as well.

Task2

Some people say job satisfaction is more important than job security, others think

people cannot always enjoy their jobs. So having a permanent job is more important. Discuss

both views and give your own opinion.

When it comes to the issue about job hunting, some people argue that self-achievement brought

by a job is more crucial than its stability, but others contend that having a stable job may be of

more importance than acquiring joy from it.

On one hand, satisfaction from work cannot be neglected.

For people who have been working for decades, salary may be not so significant because they

usually have had some wealth; comparatively, mental incentive may be a better motivation for

them.

On the other hand, stability is also a crucial factor for many employees.

In the current era, it is common that some companies go bankrupt suddenly and their employees

become unemployed, due to which those unemployed workers may not afford the expense of

their lives.

From my own perspective, whether people choose a job with stability or a job with satisfaction

mostly depends on the personality they have. If people were ambitious, a job with uncertainties

and challenges would be a preference for them because they could get joy from what they fight

for and fulfill themselves. However, for people who want to live a quiet life, a stable job may suit

them better.

Task2

The best way for the government to solve traffic congestion is to provide free public

transport 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Do you agree or disagree?

~

When it comes to the issue about how to tackle traffic congestions, some people may argue that

the best solution is to provide citizens with free public transport all the time. However, as far as I

am concerned, such solution can hardly work.

Admittedly, free transportation could function to reduce traffic congestions because people would

decrease the use of private cars.

Nevertheless, there exist more drawbacks than benefits acquired from free transportation.

To begin with, the government may face more economic burdens if public transportation is free.

Providing that the government allocates too much money to public traffic, other parts of services,

such as pension for the elderly and the disabled, may not be well supported.

Furthermore, providing free public transport all the time could lead to a waste of resources.

Apart from the commuting time, free public transport does not make sense because there is no

congestion at all.

~

In sum, providing free public transport all the time may not be the best method to tackle traffic

congestions, considering that there is no need to provide free transport when there is no

congestion and the government may face financial deficit as well.

The

in

Canada and

the

USA

and how the number changed in two academic years.

As for Canada, most students came from China and the number experienced a dramatic increase

by 14%, rising from 3210 to 3741. The rest of the students mainly came from the USA and India,

both of which witnessed a moderate growth by 6% and 7%.

Yet the situation in the USA was quite different, with most students coming from India (10052 in

2002 and 14041 in 2003). And only a small number of students was from China, though the data

rose by 7% from 1741 to 2312. 6421 students came from Canada in 2002. However, this figure had

~

From my own perspective, vertical cities and horizontal cities have different characteristics and the

key question is what kind of life one pursues. Providing that a person is ambitious to fulfill his/her

life target, a vertical city may be a suitable choice because of more working opportunities there. In

addition, citizens who want a higher life quality should choose to live in vertical cities since more

services and high-tech products could be provided by enterprises. However, if a person prefers a

quiet life, dwelling in a horizontal city should be his/her first choice since the pace of life is slow

and leisurely.

In

my

of

view,

technology

brings

about

higher

efficiency

and

greater

convenience,

even

though

it

causes

confusion

and

disorder

under

some

circumstances.

The benefits of modern technologies are multiple. Automation is widely used on the assembly line,

setting free millions of people from the arduous and repetitive work. Thanks to the widespread use

of the Internet, people have easier access to information than ever before. Instead of going to the

library

to

Despite

the

above-mentioned

benefits,

we

cannot

deny

the

fact

that

technology

may

lead

to

complexity and inconvenience in some cases. For instance, some old people find it difficult to use

public facilities equipped with electronic-devices. However, this issue can be addressed with clear

Another

example

is

cyber

that

some

The given bar charts compare the difference of population density in six countries in the year of

country that experienced negative population growth.

As is revealed in the first chart, Japanese lived much closer to each other with a total of 338 people

Australia and Canada were quite low (both were 3).

Traditionally

it is widely believed that public funds should be put into essential sectors that bring

immediate and tangible benefits

but in recent years

the technology boom has introduced us a

seemingly promising field: study on aliens.

The investment on extraterrestrial beings, undeniably, can better prepare mankind for the future

both

technologically

and

emotionally.

Tracing,

analyzing

studying

the

extraterrestrial

allows

us

to

embrace

alien

technology

human

Additionally,

we

temporarily

about

the

nature

of

these

hypothetical aliens and it is unwise to assume they are friendly. Spending money in studying them

enables us to learn their intrinsic quality and to know whether we should open our arms or put up

shields when they pay us a visit.

On the other hand, it is argued that this investment is money-wasting when living beings on the

earth are struggling for environment degradation and food crisis. The former, like smog and soil

contamination, has posed a threat to people's health condition and even survival. As for the latter

many

Task2:

Many young people leave school with negative attitudes towards learning. Why? How

to encourage positive attitudes?

Task2

Sample answer

~

In

the

current

era,

there

is

a

phenomenon

that

the

current

generation

does

not

hold

a

positive

view of study when they leave school. This essay will examine the possible reasons and potential

solutions for this phenomenon.

To begin with, students do not know how to use what they learn, which makes them dislike study.

Currently,

some

students

are

satisfied

with

what

they

have

learned

from

the

class,

but

actually

there exists a huge gap between what one learns and what one can do. For example, if a mechanic

just

learns

everything

from

a

manual

theoretically,

it

does

not

necessarily

mean

that

she

or

he

could

successfully

fix

a

car

immediately.

Thus,

in

lack

of

internship

and

working

experience,

students may find that lessons given by teachers cannot be directly used in work and it is natural

for them to neglect study on purpose.

~

Additionally,

study

is

not

the

only

factor

for

success.

Some

students

regard

academic

performances

as

a

guarantee

for

job

seeking,

but

they

may

neglect

other

crucial

factors.

For

example,

communicative

skills

are

emphasized

in

almost

every

enterprise

currently.

If

a

person

does

not

know

how

to

cooperate

and

coordinate

with

peers,

even

if

he

or

she

has

a

good

academic performance, they may not be accepted by enterprises. Thus, it is the ignorance of social

skills that makes some candidates fail to secure employment, but they may attribute their failure to

learning.

~

In

order

to

spark

young

people’s

interest

in

studying

and

alter

t

heir

negative

attitude

towards

study,

In sum, lacking working experience and social skills may account for the reason why young people

universities

Task1:

Please

describe

the

information

on

both

pictures

and

then

make

comparison

and

contrast if necessary.

Task1

Sample answer:

The given two charts illustrate how the value of trade

between China and Australia has changed

from 1998 to 2004 as well as how the trade volume of four types of goods imported from China to

Australia varied between 2003 and 2004.

It can

be

seen

clearly

from

the

first

chart that the

given

period

witnessed

an

increasing

trend

in

both imports and exports. To be more specific, the former tripled from $$6 to $$18 billion while the

latter experienced a less significant increase, rising from $$4 to slightly more than $$10 billion.

As for the second picture, it indicates

that all

types of imported goods gained popularity except

clothing, which was the most popular in 2003 but replaced by toys and sports goods one year later.

Despite a slight increase ($$500 to $$ 800 billion), furniture stilled ranked last. The trade volume

of

telecommunication goods, on the other hand

rose much more dramatically from $$1500 to $$ 2500

billion.

Overall,

the

net

exports

in

Australia

were

negative

and

the

deficit

was

gradually

increasing

from

1998 to 2004 and the toys and sports goods were the most welcomed in 2004. (200 words)

Task2:

Children

can

learn

effectively

through

watching

TV.

Therefore

children

should

be

encouraged to watch TV regularly both at home and at school. To what extent do you agree

or disagree?

Task2

Sample answer:

Traditionally, classroom-based education was the main source of knowledge but in recent years, it

is not uncommon that children are taking advantage of the television to study. Consequently, it is

suggested that they watch TV programs both in and out of school. In my opinion, it is beneficial for

their all-round development despite some drawbacks.

Initially,

the

educational

programs

on

TV

can

help

to

consolidate

knowledge

learnt

in

class.

For

example, documentary and public service advertisement about the environment

usually shown at

dinner,

can

disseminate

information

about

our

great

mother

nature

and

the

environment

problems facing today's world. This can be more impressive than lessons in their textbooks.

The

entertaining

programs

during

lunch

break

at

school

can

also

facilitate

their

learning.

To

be

more

specific

most

of

the

entertainments

aiming

at

children

are

inventive

and

fantastic.

The

vibrant colors and brilliant ideas can always attract them easily and contribute to developing their

creativity and innovation before they realize it.

Some

may

worry

that

the

unhealthy

information

on

TV,

like

violence

and

pornography,

would

mislead students, who are often considered as having no strong sense of right and may imitate the

wrongdoings

blindly.

However,

this

can

be

avoided

if

strict

censorship

is

enforced

to

grade

the

programs and ensure that students are enjoying appropriate shows when

it is their TV time and

that is exactly why they should watch TV in a regular manner.

In

conclusion,

television

programs

benefit

students

both

academically

and

spiritually

and

they

should be allowed to watch TV as long as they are protected from the malicious information.
