Are you a social media
addict? Are you always checking your smartphone to
see how many 'likes'
you've received
for your latest post? Maybe you feel comforted by
the sound that someone has
sent you a
message?
Don't worry, you're not alone.
We check our phones an average of 150 times a day,
and
around 30% of the total time spent
online is devoted to social media. Some experts
now fear this
habit could be damaging
our mental health.
This is something
particularly bothering young adults, according to
a study from the
University of
Pittsburgh. It found the more they used social
media, the more likely they are to be
depressed(
沮丧的
).
In tests, those people who checked social media
frequently were 2.7 times
more likely
to be depressed compared to those who spent most
of their time generally surfing
the
internet, who had just 1.7 times the risk.
Some of us certainly feel
sad when we're ignored on social media sites, or
when we see
someone else having a
better time than us. But depression is a more
serious condition and
clinical
psychologist, Abigael San, recently told the BBC
that,
getting significantly worse over
the last 5-6 years. You can get so
hooked
(上瘾的)
that it takes
you away from your real
relationships.
likely to worsen pre-
existing issues than directly cause them.
Other research by Glasgow University
found that teenagers are affected by the 24-hour
demands of their social media accounts.
It found that those with higher levels of
emotional
investment in social media,
and who use it at night, were more likely to feel
depressed and
anxious.
Despite these warning signs, why do
some of us continue to keep clicking? Well, I
suppose
we all want to be liked and we
don't want to miss out on a conversation that's
taking place
online. But we need to
know when to switch off our
virtual
(虚拟的)
online world
and connect
with the real world
instead.
32. Who is more likely to be
depressed according to the study?
A. People surfing the Internet
regularly.
B. People
checking social media frequently.
C. People longing for more
messages.
D. People
receiving a few
“likes ”
for their posts.
33. Why
does the author give a quote from Abigael San in
Para.4?
A. To give a more
supporting example.
B. To
introduce the coming topic.
C. To stress the importance of social
media.
D. to explain the
cause of a social media addict.
34. Why do people get addicted to
social media according to the author?
A. Because they have more time and
money.
B. Because the
virtual world is much more attractive.
C. Because emotional investment in
social media benefits them.
D. Because they want to attract more
attention.
’s the passage
mainly about?
A. It’s common
for teenagers to be a social medial
addict.
B. Using smartphone
does harm to people’s health.
C. social media addiction contributes
to depression.
D. It’s better to stay away from the
virtual online world.

typical school day in the UK starts around 8:30
am. This is often even earlier elsewhere in
the world, with students sitting down
to their first lesson at 7:30 am in the US. The
average
teenager ideally needs eight to
nine hours’ sleep each night, but in reality a lot
of teenagers
struggle to get this much.
A lot of the problems arise because our sleep
patterns are not fixed, and
they change
as we grow.
So a later
school start time could help to solve this
problem, by ensuring to get their eight
plus hours of sleep and react properly
to their body’s natural rhythms
(
规律
). There has been a
general shift over the past 25 years to
shorten the school day. This is not at the cost of
teaching
time (which has remained
constant) but at the cost of natural breaks, which
has led to reduced
lunch time and
lesson breaks.
Later start
times could help teens’ grades and health. This is
mainly because it makes the
management
of children easier. Supervising
(
监管
) hundreds of children
“playing” requires
effective staffing
(
人员配备
). And there is always
the fear that behavior worsens during breaks.
So the theory goes that having them in
class and strictly supervised must be
better.
But this means that
students barely have enough time to absorb what
they were doing in
maths before
suddenly they are thrust into ancient history. And
teaching staff also transit from one
class to another, with hardly a rest or
time to refocus.
Clearly
rethinking the school day could benefit everyone
involved. Anyway, it could also
lead to
better achievement in teenagers and less of a
struggle for parents in the mornings. For
teachers, it could also mean a less
stressful day all around and what could be better
than that?
8.

children’s lunch time and lesson
breaks.

teaching time.

rhythms.

according to the text?
A. To
supervise children more easily.
B.
To make children quickly take in what they.
Learned.
C. To
reduce children’s excitement.
D. To make children behave better in
class.
10. What can we learn

It benefits the students only.
11. What can be the best title for the

differently.

feelings out, but it will be better for
the team in the long run.
2. ____67____

for you if you're constantly blaming others for
not
meeting
