housemaid,

her

love

is

pure

and

noble.

She

regards

Rochester

’s wealth

as not worthy of serious consideration, and the reason why she is

deeply in love with him is that he can treat others as equals, consider her to be a friend

and get along with her heart to heart.

In the background of that time, it was really so

rare and commendable

to call for women’s

independence, equality and freedom.
