Reading Comprehension 20%
Directions: There are two passages in
this part. Each passage is followed by five
questions or
unfinished statements. For
each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C
and should
decide on the BEST CHOICE.
Passage One
We once had a
poster competition in our fifth grade art class.
“You
could
win
prizes,”
our
teacher
told
us
as
she
wrote
the
poster
information
on
the
blackboard.
She
passed
out
sheets
of
construction
paper
while
continuing,
“The
first
prize
is
ten
dollars.
You just have to make sure that the
word
s on the blackboard appear
somewhere on your poster.”
We
studied
the
board
critically.
Some
of
us
looked
with
one
eye
and
held
up
certain
colors
against
the
blackboard,
rocking
the
sheets
to
the
right
or
left
while
we
conjured
up
our
designs.
Others
twisted their hair around their fingers
or chewed their erasers while deep in thought. We
had
plans for that

each and every one of
us. I

Everyone in the class made a poster.
Some of us used parts of those fancy paper
napkins, while
others used nothing but
colored construction paper. Some of us used big
designs, and some of
us preferred to
gather our art tidily down in one corner of our
poster and let the space draw

it.

it. I
determined it to be the very best of all of the

and then
I turned it

Passage Two
In bringing up

(学会)
of each
new
skill
—
the
first
spoken
words,
the first
independent
steps,
or
the
beginning
of
reading
and
writing. It is often tempting to hurry
the child beyond his natural learning rate, but
this can
set up dangerous feelings of
failure and states of worry in the child. This
might happen at any
stage. A baby might
be forced to use a toilet too early; a young child
might be encouraged to
learn to read
before he knows the meaning of the words he reads.
On the other hand, though, if
a child
is left alone too much, or without any learning
opportunities, he loses his natural
enthusiasm for life and his desire to
find out new things for himself.
