Most people think of a camel as an obedient beast of burden, because it is best known for its ability to carry

heavy loads across vast stretches of desert without requiring water. In reality, the camel is considerably more than just the

Arabian equivalent of the mule. It also possesses a great amount of intelligence and sensitivity.

The Arabs assert that camels are so acutely aware of injustice and ill treatment that a camel owner who punishes one of

the beasts too harshly finds it difficult to escape the camel

s vengeance. Apparently, the animal will remember an injury

and wait for an opportunity to get revenge.

In order to protect themselves from the vengeful beasts, Arabian camel drivers have learned to trick their camels into

believing

they

have

achieved

revenge.

When

an

Arab

realizes

that

he

has

exited

a

camel

s

rage,

he

places

his

own

garments on the ground in the animal

s path. He arranges the clothing so that it appears to cover a man

s body. When

the camel recognizes its master

s clothing on the ground, it seizes the pile with its teeth, shakes the garments violently

and

tramples

on

them

in

a

rage.

Eventually,

after

its

anger

has

died

away,

the

camel

departs,

assuming

its

revenge

is

complete. Only then does the owner of the garments come out of hiding, safe for the time being, thanks to this clever

ruse.

1. Which of the following is mentioned in this passage?

A. The camel never drinks water.

B. The camel is always violent.

C. The camel is very sensitive.

D. The camel is rarely used anymore.

2. It is implied in the passage that ________.

A.

the mule is a stupid and insensitive animal

B.

the mule is as intelligent as the camel

C.

the mule is an animal widely used in the desert

D.

the mule is a vengeful animal

3. From this passage we can conclude that ________.

A.

camels are generally vicious towards their owners

B.

camels usually treat their owners well

C.

camels don

t see very well

D.

camels try to punish people who abuse them

4. The writer makes the camel

s vengeful behaviour clearer to the reader by presenting ______.

A. a well- planned argument

B. a large variety of examples

C. some eyewitness accounts

D. a typical incident

5. The main idea of the passage is _____________.

A.

camels can be as intelligent as their drivers

B.

camels are sensitive to injustice and will seek revenge on those who harm them

C.

camel drivers are often the targets of camels

revenge

D.

camels are sensitive creatures that are aware of injustice

Because

speech

is

the

most

convenient

form

of

communication,

in

the

future

we

want

essentially

natural

conversations with computers. The primary point of contact will be a simple device that will act as our window on the

world. It will have to be small enough to slip into your pocket, so there will be a screen but no keyboard: you will simply

talk

to

it.

The

device will

be

permanently

connected

to

the

internet

and will

send

relevant

information

up

to

you

as

it

comes in. Such devices will evolve naturally in the next five to ten years.

Just how quickly people will adapt to a voice-based internet world is uncertain. Many believe that, initially at least, we

will need similar conventions for the voice to those we use at present on screen: click, back, forward, and so on. But soon

you

will

undoubtedly

be

able

to

interact

by

voice

with

all

those

IT-based

services

you

currently

connect

with

over

the

internet by means of a keyboard. This will help the internet serve the entire population, not just technofreaks.

Changes like this will encompass the whole world. Because English is the language of science, it will probably remain

the language in which the technology is most advanced, but most speech-recognition techniques are transferable to other

languages provided there is sufficient motivation to undertake the work.

Of course, in any language there are still huge problems for us to solve. Carefully dictated, clear speech can now be

understood

by

computers

with

only

a

4-5

percent

error

rate,

but

even

state-of-the-art

technology

still

records

30-40

percent

errors

with

spontaneous

speech.

Within

ten

years

we

will

have

computers

that

respond

to

goal- directed

conversation,

but

for

a

computer

to

have

a

conversation

that

takes

into

account

human

social

behavior

is

probably

50

years off. We

re not going to be chatting to the big screen in the living room just yet.

1. Computers can now understand __________ of carefully dictated, clear speech.

A. 4-5%

B. 30-40%

C. 91-92%

D. 95-96%

2 The simple device, possibly with a screen but no keyboard, can be put to use ___________.

A. within fifty years

B. fifty years later

C. in the next five to ten years

D. within the next five years

3. Which of the following may be the best title for the passage?

A. Internet and Human Voice

B. Computers and Artificial Speech

C. Screen and Speech Recognition

D. Computers and Human Behavior

4. Which of the following is NOT true?

A. Speech is the most convenient form of communication.

B. Speech- recognition techniques can be used between different languages.

C. The tone of the passage is blindly hopeful.

D. Lots of problems are waiting to be solved for the speech recognition.

5. The word

Disney is one of the most powerful companies in the world. In fact, it is so big and has so much influence that

a new word has come into English: DISNEYFICATION. Here is a quick guide to the effects of Disneyfication.

A few media and publishing giants control many of the things we watch, read and listen to. Therefore the West

mainly

the USA

has a strong influence on the world

s popular culture. It is easy for people to identify with the products of the

entertainment corporations. These products are glamorous, exciting and full of the latest technology; they easily become

part of the culture that people share with their friends and their communities.

As

the

culture

of

western

entertainment

spreads,

the

world

will

lose

a

lot

of

its

cultural

variety.

Everyone

is

becoming more and more alike: all around the world teenagers wear the same

uniform

of baseball caps, blue jeans

and running shoes.

4

Countries

like

Canada,

France

and

Malaysia

have

been

fighting

hard

to

protect

their

traditional

culture

by

restricting the import of foreign books, films and so on. However, companies that want to increase their culture exports

are in favor of a new treaty, the Multilateral Treaty of Investment. This treaty would limit the power of governments to

control cultural imports.

Major corporations like Disney make consumerism part of sports, arts and entertainment. After you have taken

your children to see the latest Disney movie, they will want you to buy the video, the key chain, the toys, the T-shirt, the

note-paper, the pencil set

Every film comes with a package of products, games, and children

s books

and, of course,

a careful plan for marketing them all.

Theme

parks

are

becoming

a

model

for

towns

and

commercial

development.

Everywhere,

you

can

find

chain

restaurants, giant shopping malls, and modernized city centers that all follow the same pattern. They are all designed to

make us feel as if we are getting away from life

s problems

and to make us spend money. As this kind of development

spreads, there is less and less space for other values and other ways of doing things.

1. The effects of Disneyfication can be seen from all of the following EXCEPT that ________.

A. the world grows like a theme park

B. we buy, buy, buy

C. we have the corporate view of nature

D. western culture grows stronger

2. What does the world

disneyfication

< br>

imply?

A. Disney is a giant corporation.

B. We all become more alike.

C. The local culture becomes less strong.

D. The real world is becoming more and more like a theme park

like Disneyland.

3. As far as the USA is concerned, the Multilateral Treaty of Investment signifies __________.

A. the limit of

culture exports

B. the spread of

culture exports

C. the restrict of

culture imports

D. the limit of government

s power to control the culture imports

4. What is the main idea of the passage?

A. The big influence that Disney plays on the world.

B. Disney motivates us to buy its products.

C. Children are crazy about Disney fashion.

D. Disney is simply a dream to us all.

5. The word

Ideas about education are changing in the United States. Education today is not just a high school diploma or a

college degree. Many adults are not interested in going to college. They are interested in other kinds of learning. For them,

learning does not end with a diploma.

Continuing education gives these adults the opportunity to increase their knowledge about their own field or to learn

about a new field. It also gives them a chance to improve their old skills or to learn new ones.

Secretaries, mechanics, and barbers can take classes to improve their work skills. Nurses can take classes to increase

their knowledge of nursing. If they know more or learn more, then they can get a better job or earn more money.

Continuing education classes give some adults the chance to learn new skills. There is usually a large variety of classes

to choose from, typing, foreign cooking, photography, auto repair, furniture repair, or swimming. These are only some of

the classes available.

Some adults take classes for fun or because the class will be useful for them. For example, they can choose a class in

almost any language, Chinese, Spanish or English as a second language. There are classes in first aid or classes in sewing.

There are also many other types of classes to choose from.

Other

adults

take

continuing

education

classes

to

improve

their

own

lives

because

they

want

to

feel

better

about

themselves. Overweight people can find exercise classes or classes in nutrition. Others can learn how to be good parents,

or how to get along with other people.

There are many opportunities for adults to continue their learning. Almost any community college or public school

system has a continuing education program. There are classes in schools, community buildings, or churches. Most classes

are in the evening, so working people can attend. The classes are usually small, and they are inexpensive.

7

Thousands of people register for continuing education classes each year. They receive no diploma or certificate, and

no grade for most of the classes they attend. For them, learning is something they do because they want to.

1. Some adults go to continuing education classes to _______.

A) get a college education

B) learn new skills

C) get a certificate

D) earn grades

2. Attending continuing education classes _______.

A)

does not cost much money

B) is expensive

C)

requires a loan

D) is free of charge

3. What

s the main idea of Para.7?

A)

Adults can continue their learning.

B)

Most continuing education classes are in the evening.

C)

Adults have many opportunities to continue their learning.

D)

Classes are held for working people.

4. Lots of people attend continuing education classes because ________.

A)

the classes will help them feel better about themselves

B)

there are many courses they can choose from

C)

they can also go to church at the same time

D)

learning is something they are interested in doing

5. We can learn from the passage that ________.

A)

college education is not important

B)

adult education is very popular

C)

other kinds of learning are more important than school learning

D)

continuing education classes teach the same courses that are taught in colleges

Engineering design aims to link economic, social, environmental and of course safety factors to produce the best

solution. This is especially true in earthquake engineering where it is possible to design a building that is

safe

for all

types of earthquakes but does not fit the design brief. For example, it is not economically feasible to design buildings in

Bristol to withstand a large earthquake as the chances are very small. Similarly a square concrete structure that has small

windows and thick walls may be the ideal design for a particular area; however, it wouldn

t fit a design brief asking for a

modern high-tech design. This balance of factors can only be achieved by engineers combining experience and knowledge

of the area where the structure is to be located.

Design practice has been changing over the last few years. The older design requirements used to insist that in an

earthquake

the

building

should

maintain

enough

structural

integrity

to

remain

standing.

This

meant

that

if

the

serviceability

limit

state

was

passed

the

structure

would

have

to

be

demolished,

as

it

would

be

no

longer

safe

to

use.

Although this concept saves lives as people can escape from buildings, it does nothing to prevent the huge financial cost of

a large earthquake as a large proportion of buildings have to be demolished and rebuilt. Thus the new design requirements

demand that the structure should remain standing in an earthquake and additionally not have to be demolished.

The

other

factor

often

left

unconsidered

is

the

effect

of

after

shocks.

These

shocks

generally

have

little

effect

on

undamaged

buildings;

however,

on

damaged

ones

they

can

have

destructive

effect

and

stop

rescue

operations.

In

the

assessment of buildings the energy from an aftershock should be considered.

Apparently the damage caused by earthquakes is almost entirely associated with man-made structures. Earthquakes

only cause death by the damage they induce in structures such as buildings, dams, bridges and other works of man. And

this is one of the reasons why earthquake engineering is so important.

1. What is the main idea of the passage?

A)

Earthquake engineers with experience and knowledge.

8

B)

Some factors for building design in earthquake engineering.

C)

Buildings to withstand all possible earthquakes.

D)

Equal consideration in earthquake engineering.

2. The word

demo lish

in the second paragraph means ____________.

A)

pull down

B) pull up

C) pull away

D) pull apart

3. Which of the following is not true about the new design requirement?

A)

Building should remain integrated in an earthquake.

If you are like most people, your intelligence varies form season to season. You are probably a lot sharper in the

spring than you are at any other time of year. A noted scientist, Ellsworth Huntington (1876-1947), concluded from other

men

s work and his own among peoples in different climates that climate and temperature have a definite effect on our

mental abilities.

He found that cool weather is much more favourable for creative thinking than is summer heat. This does not mean

that all people are less intelligent in summer than they are during the rest of the year. It does mean, however, that the

mental abilities of large numbers of people tend to be lowest in summer.

Spring appears to be the best period of the year for thinking. One reason may be that in the spring man

s mental

abilities are affected by the same factors that bring about great changes in all nature.

Fall

is

the

next-best

season,

then

winter.

As

for

summer,

it

seems

to

be

a

good

time

to

take

a

long vacation

from

thinking.

1. According to the passage, man

s intelligence _________.

A)

stays the same throughout the year

B)

varies from day to day

C)

changes with the seasons

D)

changes from year to year

2. Ellsworth Huntington decided that climate and temperature have _________.

A)

a great effect on everyone

s intelligence

B)

some effect on most people

s intelligence

C)

some effect on a few people

s intelligence

D)

no effect on most people

s intelligence

3. Ellsworth Huntington

s conclusion was based on _________.

A)

variations of his own mental abilities from season to season

B)

the results of research done by him and other scientists among peoples in different climates

C)

detailed records of temperature changes in different places

D)

detailed records of different ways of thinking among peoples in different climates

4. Why does the author say summer is a good time to take a long vacation from thinking?

A)

Because a long vacation in summer helps to improve people

s mental power.

9

B)

Because people tend to be less creative during summer.

C)

Because summer is a good time for outdoor activities.

D)

Because mental exertion in the summer heat taxes too much of people

s energy.

5. The central idea of this passage is _________.

A)

man

s mental abilities change from season to season

B)

man

s intelligence varies from place to place

C)

man should take a long vacation in summer

D)

if you want to do creative thinking, go to a cool place

Just

as

exercise

strengthens

the

heart

and

lungs,

bones

and

muscles,

it

may

also

power

up

the

brain.

A

succession of scientific studies of animals implies that physical activity has a positive effect on mental functioning.

It

s

clear

that

the

brain

benefits

from

exercise,

says

brain

scientist

William

Greenough

of

the

University

of

Illinois

at

Urbana-Champaign.

His

studies

with

rats

have

demonstrated

two

primary

effects

of

activity:

vigorous

physical

exercise

provides

the

brain

with

more

fuel,

and

skill- based exercise

increases

the

formation

of

connections

in

the

brain,

which,

according to the proposals of some scientists, may make the brain better able to process information. In one experiment,

laboratory rats were separated into three groups. One group was exercised by running inside an automatic wheel, a second

group improved their skills in a complicated obstacle course, and a third group was inactive.

The animals that learned to

go

through

the

obstacle

course

exhibited

a

greater

number

of

brain

connections

than

the

animals

in

the

exercised

or

inactive

groups,

Greenough

said.

In

contrast,

the

animals

that

exercised

inside

the

automatic

wheel

possessed

a

greater density of blood vessels in the brain than did either of the other two groups of animals.

Learning a new dance step may boost the brain in the same way that learning a language can, he says. And if the

dance is a good physical exercise as well, the benefits multiply. Young brains may be especially able to boost brain power

through exercise, suggested another of Greenough

s experiments that showed the most significant changes in the brain

occurred among rats that had been exercised when very young. And while animals aren

t people, he says it is logical to

make the inference that an effect found in rats may also apply to humans. Human studies have focused primarily on older

adults

and

suggest

that

regular

exercises

can

improve

the

speed

with

which

the

brain

processes

information.

Measurements made by Arthur Kramer at the University of Illinois demonstrated that inactive adults, aged 63 to 82, could

hit buttons faster in response to a tone after they went through a 10-week water exercise course. A corresponding control

group that didn

t exercise showed no improvement. This boost in reaction time after exercise training may occur because

declines associated with getting old could actually stem from declines in physical condition. Some scientists speculate the

reduction in mental function often attributed to getting old may really be a penalty of neglecting to stay physically active,

in addition to related factors such as medicines and poor diet.

In older people, an exercise program appears important for brain maintenance,

says Daniel M. Landers, professor

of

exercise

science

at

Arizona

State

University,

who

recently

published

an

article

reviewing

the

scientific

literature

on

activity

s effect on the brain. Numerous studies show that children who engage in regular physical activity do better in

school than their inactive classmates. But until recently, the academic edge gained by participating in sports was thought

to come from the increased self- confidence, the better mood, and the ability to concentrate that comes from burning off

steam

in

exercise.

Now,

however,

some

scientists

have

revised

their

way

of

thinking,

and

point

to

possible

physical

connections.

1. What makes the brain better able to process information?

A)

Vigorous physical exercise.

B) Skill-based exercise.

C)

Both of them.

D) Neither of them.

2. While _______ of rats showed a greater number of brain connections, _______ had a greater density of blood vessels in

the brain.

A) the first group / the third group

B) the second group / the third group

C) the first group / the second group

D) the second group / the first group

3. One possible reason for scientists to make experiments with rats or other animals is that _________.

A)

rats benefit from the experiments

B)

the experiments can boost the brains of the rats

C)

an effect found in rats may also apply to humans

D)

rats and humans are very much alike

4. Which word in Paragraph 6 tells us that older adults were divided into groups in the human studies?

A) Corresponding.

B) Inactive.

C) Older.

D) Faster.

5. Which of the following is not a finding that results from the studies of older adults?

A)

Regular exercise can improve the speed with which the brain processes information.

B)

Inactive adults can hit buttons faster in response to a tone after being trained.

C)

Getting old is the cause for the reduction in mental function.

D)

Exercise can make one smarter.
