“Mom, can I bake some
bread?” We were 15; my best friend, Hanna, and I,
determined to try
our hands at
creating some beautiful bread.
“It’s not worth the
trouble,” my mother said. “It takes lots of time
and makes a big mess. Our bakery bread is
delicious without all that
effort.”
Begging was
useless. Mom’s “no” meant “No!”
But
several
weeks
later,
opportunity
knocked.
My
parents
were
going
out
for
the
evening.
I
immediately
invited Hanna to
be my partner in bread-baking crime.
We
studied the recipe. That was easy. “Mix oil into
flour then beat in four eggs, one at a time, with
remaining
sugar
and salt.”
We were not good at
breaking eggs. I tried to learn from my mother.
“Gradually add eight cups of flour.
When dough (
面团
) holds
together, squeeze it.”
We
took turns working like that. “Is the dough
‘holding together’?” we asked each
other.
I
reme
mbered my neighbor’s instructions:
“If it’s too sticky, add some flour; if too dry,
add water.”
We added water.
Then more flour. Then more water. By then, the
mass of our dough had grown very much.
“Place dough on floured surface and
squeeze till smooth,”
the recipe
instructed.
We took turns burying our
hands in the damp dough, pinching, squeezing, and
feeling it leak between fingers.
“Clean
and oil bowl, and then return dough to bowl. Cover
and let dough rise in a warm place for one
hour.”
This was good
news
—we’d have a break. On the dirty
kitchen chairs, we dreamed about our beautiful
bread.
“See?” we would tell my mom.
“Isn’t it worth the work?”
Hanna and I couldn’t help glancing at
the rising process every few minutes. But nothing
happened.
“Maybe something
will happen in the hot oven,” I said.
Unfortunately, when we removed the
loaves from the oven, they were like hard stones.
Mom was right; it takes time and
effort. It sometimes makes a mess. But still it
feels good, somehow, to be
part of that
long, ongoing chain of bread bakers. Since that
night, both Hanna and I have learned to do it
right.

In Britain, in a population of 60
million, there are 13 million grandparents, many
of whom live alone a long
way from
their loneliness of these older people has become
an issue that schools are trying to
teach children about .
On a
popular teacher’s website, there is a classroom
activity to help make children aware of the
implications
of the different
generations of the same family living far
from each other. It’s a story about
Mrs. Eiderdown, an
elderly lady whose
grandchildren have moved to Australia with their
parents. She lives alone and rarely sees her
family .
First of all,
the children speculate about Mrs.
Eiderdown’s life.
What does she have for breakfast ? what
does she do all day ?how does she feel
about her life ?
One day, Mrs.
Eiderdown decides that she wants a pet to keep her
company and puts an advertisement in a
local shop window. Then she waits at
home to see if anyone will answer her
advertisement .
A tall thin man rings
her doorbell. he is holding a cardboard box. Mrs.
Eiderdown chats with the man for ten
minutes before she realizes that she
hasn’t looked in
-side the box to see
what the pet is. She can hear a his-sing
sound. Th
e children guess
what is in the box(a snake). Mrs. Eiderdown thanks
the man but says she doesn’t think
the
snake is a good idea .
The next time
the doorbell rings, there’s a lady on the
doorstep, also carrying a cardboard the bottom
of the box, Mrs. Eiderdown sees
something black and hairy with eight legs. Again
,the children say what they
think it is (a spider). Mrs. Eiderdown
thanks the lady for her kindness but says that a
spider is not the sort of pet
she has
in mind.

When we think
of leadership, we often think of strength and
power . But what are these really, and how do
they operate?
Leadership
today is not about forcing others to do things, if
this is even possible,it is short-term, and tends
to
backfire. If you order someone to do
something against their will, they may do it
because they feel they must,but
the
anger they feel will do more harm in the long-
term,they will also experience fear.
Fear causes the thinking brain to shut
down, making the person unable to function at his
or her best. If they
associate you with
this emotion of fear, they will become less
functional around you ,and you will have succeeded
in not only shooting yourself in the
foot, but possibly making a very good employee or
partner unable to perform
effectively
.Fear has no place in leadership.
The
way
we
influence
people
in
a
lasting
way
is
by
our
own
character,and
our
understanding
and
use
of
emotion.
We can order someone to do something ,which may be
part of the work day; or we can employ them at
the
emotional
level,
so
they
became
fully
devoted
to
the
projects
and
provide
some
of
their
own
motivation.

Laughter Yoga
(
瑜伽
) is a unique technique
invented by Dr Kataria, a doctor from India, by
which you can learn
to “Laugh for No
Reason”. You don’t even need a sense of humor, no
funny jokes or comedy programs
—
just a
willingness to laugh
—
and in the
present climate everyone needs to laugh more.
Laughter Yoga is a combination of
Laughter Exercises and Yogic Breathing, so that
you increase the amount of
oxygen
in
your
body
while
being
playful,
resulting
in
you
feeling
healthier,
energetic
and
alive.
This
actually
changes the
physical conditions of your body so that you start
to feel happier.
Laughter Yoga is
generally done in groups although it can be
practiced alone. When you make eye contact with
someone and you’re both willing to
laugh, the laughter is
increas
ed. However, we do
say that you can “Fake (
假装
)
it, fake
it till you make
it” because the body doesn’t know the difference
between fake and true laughter; as long
as you’re willing to laugh you’ll
experience the same health benefits.
Laughter Yoga started in a park in
Mumbai in 1995 with just 5 participants, and
now there’re over 6
,000
laughter
clubs in 60 different
countries
—
showing the willingness of the world to
laugh together.
In the UK, Julie was
one of the first people to train as a Laughter
Leader with Dr Kataria in June 2002. In 2006

she was awarded Laughter Ambassador for
her selfless service to promote Laughter Yoga.
“Yoga has been part of my life for 30
years but 7 years ago my life changed when I
discovered Laughter Yoga. I
believ
e laughter and yoga
are both good for your health,” says
Julie.
60. Why do people
practicing Laughter Yoga laugh a lot?
A. They have a sense of humor.
B. They are amused by
jokes.
C. They are willing to laugh.
D. They can’t help laughing a
lot.
61. What do we know
about Julie from the passage?
A. She
took up Laughter Yoga 30 years ago.
B.
She helped make Laughter Yoga more popular.
C. She used to suffer from serious
physical problems.
D. She was the first
person to practise Laughter Yoga.
62.
The purpose of the passage is to _____.
A. persuade people to take up Laughter
Yoga
B. tell people how to practise
Laughter Yoga
C. describe the good
effects of Laughter Yoga
D. introduce
Laughter Yoga as a new event

Officials in a remote Russian city have
drawn up a list of practical tips for locals on
how to survive encounters

after growing numbers have wandered into the
streets in search of food.
Officials in
the city of Syktyvkar drew up the guidelines to
guide the local people, after several bears were
caught
sight of in the city, going
hungry after a heat wave shriveled their usual
diet of nuts and berries.
The guide
warns that city people there should stay calm and
stand still if they meet with a bear.
“Speak to the bear

In September, a bear attacked a
25-year-old man in a central street of the city,

with brown bears have been recorded recently,”

From a
young age, it was my dream to go to Africa and
work with animals. Everybody laughed at me, but my
mother, Vanne, told me never to give
up, and that I could always find a way.
So, when I was 23, after saving up my
earnings from working as a waitress, I went to
wild, untamed (
野性的
)
Africa and began my work. In 1960 I
went to the Gombe Stream Chimpanzee Reserve. At
that time, we knew
nothing of the
behavior or social structure of chimps
(
黑猩猩
), and I was to go there
and see what I could find out.
Usually,
when you wake up, you leave your dreams behind
you, but I found myself waking up to my dream.
As the British government wouldn’t let
me go without
older women’s
company
, my amazing mother came with
me and stayed for four months. We
shared a second-hand army tent, and we used the
stream for fresh water and
washing. We
could swim in the lake, although there were
crocodiles.
It was beautiful there,
although both my mother and I nearly died of
malaria (
疟疾
).
I
was scared I wouldn’t be
able to do what I had set out to,
because, at first, the chimps ran away from me in
fear. I spent my days watching,
listening, tracking and in the evenings
writing up my notes.
For my mother, who
stayed back at the camp, it must have been
terrifying, and very lonely. There were snakes and

spiders, as well as an old leopard who
would come by. But she had an amazing way with
people, and would hand
out medicines to
the fishermen, who saw her as a witch doctor.
In my fifth month there, I finally saw
one of the chimps, which I called David Greybeard,
stripping (

67. What does the
author
mean by saying “I found
myself
waking up to my
dream”
in the second paragraph?
A. She lacked sleep due to busy work.[
B. She found her dream was
hard to realize.
C. She had more new
dreams about her work.
D. She tried to
realize her dream every day.
68. The
author was afraid at the Reserve in the beginning
because _____.
A. there were crocodiles
in the lake
B. she could not get close
to the chimps
C. it was
hard to get clean water
D. the chimps
attacked her sometimes
69.
The author’s mother was thought
of
by the local people as _____.
A. helpful and warm-hearted
B. funny and selfish
C. romantic and talkative
D. honest and hardworking
70. Which of the following is
the author’s
important
discovery?
A. She found a new kind of
termite.
B. Chimps can communicate with
each other.
C. Some other animals can
also make tools.
D. Chimps can find
medicines to cure themselves.

Sometimes we are asked to make a speech

So, you have to give a speech

Here are some
simple steps to take the pain out of speech
making. Ask yourself the purpose of
your speech. What is the occasion? Why
are you speaking? Then, gather as many facts as
you can on your subject.
Spend plenty
of your time doing your research. Then spend
plenty of your time organizing your materials so

C
Perhaps
a
parent’s
most
important
contribution
toward
raising
a
trustful
child
is
to
develop
a
relationship
founded on
trust. A child of any age will feel proud and
grown-up if parents frequently show their trust.
In court a
defendant(
被告
) is
innocent until proved guilty. But
in
the family, a teenager “defendant” is too often
assumed
guilty.
Even when
the child is caught in a complete lie, this should
not be the end of trust. A parent can tell a child
that a single lie is forgivable. Yet it
should be clear that if lies continue, the child,
like the boy who cried wolf, will
suffer loss of trust.
When
my wife and I discovered that our son Tom, then
13, had lied about throwing a party while we were
away, we grounded him for a month. We
also told Tom that we could no longer trust him,
and we could not allow
him to stay
alone overnight again. This loss of freedom was an
important lesson; he learned how hard it is to
live
with people when they don’t trust
him. As a result, now more than three years later
we can again trust Tom to stay
alone overnight.
Parents
must always remember there is no easy answer to
this universal problem of lying. We can set a good
example, allow for privacy, monitor
friendship, develop trust and punish wrong doing,
but still we discover our
child has
lied to u
s. Finally that’s why there is
a need for trust on both sides of a
parent
-child relationship. Lying
destroys closeness and friendship. For
that reason, parents should always try to give a
child the feeling that they
can be
trusted with the truth. Parents m
ay
start with a child’s trust, but as the child grows
older, parents must earn
it.

64. _____
One should
consider the expense of equipping a complete
security system. For most complete systems which
include driveway alarms, cameras, and
electronic keypads, many can cost from $$100 to
$$10,000. The homeowner

One evening I went out and
left my 17-year-old son and his girlfriend in
charge of his 8-year-old brother and

I left
with complete confidence that the older children
would do a wonderful job of babysitting
the younger children and the younger
children would do a wonderful job of

Later, I discovered that I was
completely wrong.
I had decided to
return home earlier than planned so that my son
and his girlfriend could go out. I called
home with this happy
news
.
But instead of hearing
his cheerful, grateful voice on the other end of
the line, all I
heard was the sound of
a telephone ringing.
It was, I should
point out, after 10 p.m., when the two younger
children should have been in bed, and when
the two older children should have been
answering the phone.
“I’ll give him a

I decided

Why they might be

“Dining out” and “eating
out” are phrases people use in Britain when they
eat in a restaurant or
pub
(酒馆)
.
Eating
out is more popular in Britain today than it has
ever been. In 2006, for the first time ever,
British people
用心

26
spent
more
eating
out
than
cooking
for
themselves
and
eating
at
home.
It
seems
that
many
British
people
are
becoming increasingly interested in how
good their food tastes, and also how healthy it
is.
However, eating out can also be
expensive. As British people do not eat out every
night of the week, eating in
a
restaurant is often seen as a special occasion.
When going on a first date and wanting to impress
him/her, or if
celebrating an
anniversary or a birthday, many people like to go
to a restaurant to eat, and people often also eat
in
a restaurant before going to the
cinema or the theater.
As in all
cultures, there are many rules of
etiquette
(礼仪)
surrounding
food and eating. The knife and fork
should be used in the correct way! It
is also impolite to have your elbows
(
肘部)
on the dining
table when you are
eating.
Almost all British cities have a vast
range of food as well as traditional British food,
and all from the very
cheap to the very
expensive
—
French , Italian,
Indian, Chinese, Greek, Thai, Japan and many, many
more. In fact,
when asked which was
their favorite food, more British people said an
Indian curry
(咖喱菜肴)
than any
other
dish!
As
well as dining in a restaurant, when
people are too tired to cook after work they often
get a “takeaway”.
This means that they
order from a take-out restaurant by telephone, and
then go to collect it and take it home to
eat. Many take-out restaurants also
deliver it to your house. While you can normally
find a take-out restaurant for
almost
any food, the most popular are Italian pizza,
Indian and Chinese and then all you have to do is
to open the
door, pay and eat!

I’ve been in
th
e taxi business for thirty-five
years, and I know there is a lot about it that is
not so good. Taxi
drivers have to be
rough and rude fellows to be able to take it in
New York. You've got to be tough to fight the
New York traffic eight hours a day
these days. Because taxi drivers are tough, people
get the wrong impression
that they are
bad. Taxi drivers are just like other people. Most
of them will shake down as honest fellows. You
read in the papers almost every week
where a taxi driver turns in money or jewels or
bonds, stuff like that, people
leave in
their taxi. If they weren't honest, you wouldn't
be reading those stories in the papers.
63
.
One time in Brooklyn, I
found a diamond ring in my taxi. I remembered
helping a lady with a lot of baggage
that day, so I went back to where I had
dropped her off. It took me almost two days to
track her in order to return
her ring.
I didn't get as much as “thank you.” Still, I felt
good because I had done what w
as right.
I think I felt
better than she did.
64
.
I was born and raised in
Ireland and lived there until I was nineteen years
old. After I came to this country I
bought my own cab and have owned one
ever since. It hasn't been too easy at times, but
my wife takes care of our
money and we
have a good bit put away for a rainy day, even in
those days. In all my years of driving a taxi, I
have never had any trouble with the
public, not even with drunks. Even if they get a
little troublesome once in a
while, I
just agree with them and then they behave
themselves.
65
.
People ask me about tips.
As far as I know, practically everyone will give
you something. Come to think of it,
most Americans are pretty generous. I
always try to be nice to everyone, whether they
tip or not. I believe in God
and try to
be a good member of my
parish
(教区)
. I try to act
toward others like I think God wants me to act. I
have been trying this for a long time,
and the longer I try, the easier it
gets.

Man is a land animal, but he is also
closely tied to the sea. Throughout history the
sea has served the needs of man.
The
sea has provided man with food and a convenient
way to travel to' many parts of the world. Today,
nearly
two-thirds of the world's
population lives within 80 kilometers of the sea
coast.
In the modern technological
world, the sea offers many resources to help
mankind survive. Resources on land are
beginning to be used up. The sea,
however, still can be expected to supply many of
mail's needs.
The list of riches of the
sea yet to be developed by mail's technology is
impressive. Oil and gas explorations

of fish and shellfish is an
ancient
skill practiced in the past mainly by Oriental
people.
Besides oil and gas, the sea

that the warm temperature of the
ocean
can be used in a way similar to the steam in a
steamship. Ocean currents
(
水流
) and waves offer
possible
use as a source of energy.
Technology is enabling man to explore
even more deeply under the sea. The development of
strong, new materials
has made this
possible.
