calls
“the

forfree. The new
exam is called the
EFSET, which is short for Education
FirstStandardized English
Test. The
company, Education First, is known by theletters
EF.
It
is
reported
that
there
are
two
billion
English
languagelearners
worldwide.
Many of them are interested in attending an
Americancollege or
university.
To
do
so,
foreign
students
need
to
take
the
Test
ofEnglish
as
a
Foreign

better known as
TOEFL. However, many foreignersare not
rich
enough
to
take
the
TOEFL.

earns
only
about
$$1,000
per
year.
The
cost
of
takingthe
TOEFL is about
17.5 percent
of the average worker’s yearly wage.
It is not just individuals
who find the test pricey. Somegovernments also
find it too expensive. What’s more, not
everyone needsofficial results from
the TOEFL or
IELTS
—
the International
English LanguageTesting System. In the
future,
it’s likely
that
the government may
use
theEFSET
to
test millions of
employees
and students.
Experts
believe that the EFSET meets the highest value
inlanguage testing.
It
uses
special
computer
software
that
makes
the
questionseasier
or
harder,
depending
on
one’s
performance.
The
EFSET
measures
all
theEnglish
learners’ levels while the IELTS and
TOEFL only measure learners’levels from
intermediate to advanced. The EFSET is
unique in the sense that itgives free
online access to anyone interested in
measuring their English level.
There
is
a
50-minute
and
a
two-hour
version
of
the
test,which
its

are
calling
the
EFSET

Both

future.
The
IELTS

the

It’s
a
huge
deal
for
students
who
are
inareas
where
they
can’t
get to the TOEFL or the IELTS. However, it is too
earlyto know whether
the EFSET results
are acceptable for colleges and universitiesin
America.
(

Why
do many foreign students take the TOEFL?
A . To learn English well.B . To be
admitted to key universities.C . To receive
further education in America.D . To
find good jobs and earn much money.

What can we infer
from Paragraph 2?
A . The cost of

What can we learn about the EFSET?
A .
It
is

Record fires sweeping across the Amazon
this month have beencatching
global
headlines as scientists and environmental groups
are worriedthat they
will worsen
climate change and threaten biodiversity.
As
the
largest

world,
the
Amazon

“the

The
vast
lands
ofrainforest
play
an
important
role in the world’s ecosyste

they take inheat instead of it
being
reflected back into the atmosphere. They also
storecarbon dioxide and
produce
oxygen,

thatless

mitigating

“Any forest
destroyed is a threat to b

andthe people who use
that

atGeorge Mason University
told
National

shocking threat
isthat a

of
carbon

he

“Facingthe
global
climate
change,
we
cannot
afford more damage to a major source ofoxygen and

Amazon must be
protected,” U.N. SecretaryGeneral Antonio Guterres
said.
Data

show
that
the
number of
forest fires in Brazil quickly increased by 82
percentfrom January to

from a year ago. A total of 71,497 forestfires

of

n the Brazilian
Amazon have
decreased something between 20 and 30percent

Nobre, a researcher at theUniversity of Sao Paulo,
told German broadcaster Deutsche Welle.
Brazil owns about 60
percent of the Amazon rainforest, whosedrop could
