Passage 1
As my train
was not due to leave for another hour, I had
plenty of time to spare.
After
buying .some
magazines
to read
on
the
journey,
I
made
my way
to
the
luggage
office to collect
the heavy suitcase. I had left three days before.
There were only a few
people waiting,
and I took out my wallet to find the receipt for
my case. The receipt did
not
seem
to
be where
I
had
left
it.
I
emptied
the
contents
of
the wallet,
and
railway
tickets, money, scraps of paper, and
photographs tumbled out of it; but no matter how
hard I searched, the receipt was
nowhere to be found.
2
When my turn came, I
explained the situation sorrowfully to the
assistant. The man
looked at me
suspiciously as if to say that he had heard this
type of story many times and
asked me
to describe the case, I told him that it was an
old, brown
—
looking object
no
different from the many cases I
could see on the shelves. The assistant then gave
me a
form and told me to make a list of
the chief contents of the case. If they were
correct, he
said,
I
could
take
the
case
away. I
tried
to
remember
all
the
artic
les
I
had
hurriedly
packed and wrote them down as they came
to me.
After
I
had
done
this, I
went to
look
among the
shelves.
There were
hundreds
of
cases there and for one
dreadful moment, it occurred to me that if someone
had picked
the
receipt
up,
he could
have
easily
claimed
the
case
already.
This
had
not
happened
fortunately, for
after a time, I found the case lying on its side
high up in a comer. After
examining the
articles inside, the assistant was .soon satisfied
that it was mine and told
me I could
take the case away. Again I took out my wallet:
this time to pay. I pulled out
a
ten
—
shilling note and the
and glanced up at the assistant. He was
nodding his head knowingly, as if to say that he
had often seen this happen before too!

Passage

The word
conservation has a thrifty meaning. To conserve is
to save and protect, to
leave
what we
ourselves
enjoy
in
such
good condition
that
others
may
also
share
the
enjoyment.
Our forefathers had no idea
that human population
would increase
faster than the
supplies of raw
materials: most of them, even until very recently,
had the foolish idea
3
that
the
treasures
were
and
Most
of
the
citizens
of
earlier
generations knew
little or nothing
about the complicated
and delicate system that runs
all
through nature, and which means that, as in a
living body, an unhealthy condition of
one part will sooner or later be
harmful to all the others
Fifty years
ago, nature study was not part of the school work;
scientific forestry was
a
new
idea;
timber
was still
cheap
because
it
could
be
brought
in
any
quantity
from
distant woodlands; soil destruction and
river floods were not national problems; nobody
had yet studied
long
—
term climatic cycles
in relation to proper land use; even the word
For the sake of ourselves
and those who will come after us, we must now set
about
repairing the mistakes of our
forefathers. Conservation should, therefore, be
made a part
of everyone's daily life.
To know about the water table
(
地下水位
) in the ground is just
as important to us as a knowledge of
the basic arithmetic formulas. We need to know
why
all
watersheds
need
the
protection
of
plant
life
and
why
the
running
current
of
streams and rivers must be made to
yield their full benefit to the soil before they
finally
escape to the sea. We need to
be taught the duty of planting trees as well as of
cutting
them.
We
need
to
know the
importance
of
big,
mature
trees,
because
living
space for
most of man's fellow creatures on this
planet
is figured not only
in square measure of
surface
but also in cubic volume above the earth. In
brief, it should be our goal to restore
as much of the original beauty of
nature as we can.

D. they had no
idea of how to make good use of raw
materials
8. It can be
inferred from the third paragraph that earlier
generations didn't realize

D.
the interdependence of water, soil, and living
things
9. To avoid the

everybody

directed toward everyone
4

saying
above the earth

need to take some measures to protect space
B. Our living space should measured in
cubic volume

earth is getting smaller and smaller

conditions for both birds and animals

1. Difficulties
in
intercultural communication arise
when there is little or no awareness
of
divergent
cultural
values
and
beliefs.
In
cross-cultural
interaction,
speakers
sometimes
assume
that
what
they
believe
is
right,
because
they
have
grown
up
thinking
their
way
is
the
best.
This
ethnocentric
assumption
can
result
in
negative
judgments about
other cultures. Another manifestation of
ethnocentric attitudes is that
people
become critical of individuals from different
cultures.
2.
Everyone
connected
with
a
business
shares
in
the
risks
o
the
business.
When
a
company
goes bankrupt, that is, becomes unable to pay its
debts, it causes problems
for many
people. It is hard for the employees who may have
seek work elsewhere; the
customers
must
look
for
another
place
to
buy
their
products; creditors
usually
lose
some of the money that
they have lent to the company. But the
entrepreneur takes the
biggest risk. If
the business fails, he must pay them up to the
limit of his ability to pay.
If
he
is
skillful---
and
lucky---the
money
he
receives
from
his
business
venture will
pay for the
land, labor and capital, and there will still be
some extra money remaining
for
him. This
extra
money
is
the
profit.
If the
money
he
receives
from
the
business
venture is not enough to pay for all of
the costs, the difference is a loss.
