Application
You
should
begin
working
on
the
application
letter
when
you
are
hunting a job. Although employers
invite you to send a resume, they
also
expect you to include a letter of application. It
is known that a
resume
contains
information
related
to
the
job
’
s
requirements
and
the applicant
’
s
qualifications, but what is the purpose of a
letter of
application?
A
letter
of
application
is
based
on
the
resume
and
further
interprets
the
resume
in
terms
of
employer
benefits.
Therefore, it
should be persuasive and should be written
inductively.
Since its purpose is to
persuade people, a letter of application uses
the same sequence of parts as a sales
letter. The following procedure
is used
in most successful efforts:
Begin the
letter with selected words to get the
reader
’
s attention and
name the position for which you are
applying. If you manage to gain
the
reader
’
s
attention
in
the
opening,
you
will
make
your
letter
be
read
first.
Creatively
and
imagination
are
two
keys,
especially
for
unsolicited
application.
You
can
gain
attention
in
the
opening
in
several ways. One way is t use a topic
that shows understanding of
the
work
to
be
done.
Employers
are
glad
to
know
that
you
have
learned
something
about
the
company.
Another
way
is
to
make
a
statement
or
ask
a
question
that
focuses
attention
on
the
reader
’
s
needs that the writer seeks to fill.
Third, if you learn of a possibility
through a company employee, you can
mention his/her name in the
opening
sentence.
Many
other
ways
exist.
Avoid
overused
beginnings,
such
as
“
Please
consider
my
application
for
…
”
and
“
This application is for
…”
Present
the
information
that
qualifies
you
to
do
the
work.
You
are
likely
to
present
facts
from
3
background
areas:
education,
experience, and personal details.
Interpret the facts presented in the
resume
and
demonstrated
that
your
educational
preparation,
work
experience,
or
special
qualifications
are
relevant
to
the
job.
Sometimes
you
might
mention
some
special
knowledge
you
have
about
the
company
or
your
understanding
of
the
job
requirements.
Make this part
specific and interesting so that it can hold the
reader
’
s
attention.
Use
good
sales
strategy,
such
as
you-viewpoint
and
positive language.
Drive
for
the
appropriate
action
in
the
close.
Ask
for
interview,
reference
check,
or
further
correspondence.
All
sentences
should
have an expectant tone. Be sure that
your phone number and address
are easy
for the reader to contact you.
If
applying
for
admission
to
college
abroad,
you
should
write
the
letter simply.
Your letter should be as brief as
possible. Remember
that
your
main
purpose
is
to
request
for
a
catalogue
and
an
application form.
Therefore, such letters can be written in the
direct
order. These letters usually
contain the following points:
An unsolicited application letter
Dear Mr. Wood:
I
am writing to you to ask if you have a vacancy on
your staff for an
assistant accountant.
My
education
and
experience
give
me
the
confidence
to
apply
for
this
position.
I
graduated
from
Dongbei
University
of
Finance
and
Economics,
majoring
in
accounting.
I
have
been
working
in
the
costing
department
of
ABC
Company
for
the
past
two
years.
The
only
reason
for
my
seeking
another
employment
is
that
ABC
is
moving to a new location
in the northwest of the city, which is very
far
away
from
my
home.
It
is
inconvenient
for
me
to
go
to
work
every day.
Attached
is
my
curriculum
vita,
together
with
the
names
of
my
referees. If there is some opportunity
of a vacancy occurring in the
near
future, I would greatly appreciate being given an
interview. You
may call me at 698701 or
email me at

.
I look forward to your
reply.
Yours faithfully,
A solicited application letter
Dear Mr. Robert:
Your
advertisement
in
this
morning
’
s
paper
for
manager
of
public
relations appeals to me. I found the
wording of your advertisement
with
emphasis
on
leadership,
innovation
and
change
quite
intriguing. And my
experience and qualifications indicate that I am
the person you are seeking.
The enclosed resume indicates my
experience in the area of public
relations and management
communications.
All of my professional
experience has been in manufacturing
organizations. Most recently, I
was
manager of DFE Chemical Corporation, manufacturing
products
closely
allied
to
your
own.
I
am
quite
familiar
with
the
kinds
of
issues
and problems that you have to deal with.
I’
d like to draw
your attention to page 2 of my resume, on which
I
describe my concept of
public relations. And I am most eager to put
this concept into practice to prove it
to you.
Although
I
have
been
very
happy
with
my
present
employer
and
colleagues,
I
see
no
opportunity
in
the
future
to
direct
a
full-
scale
public relations program. I am
eager to join your company where I
can
assume this broader responsibility.
I
am
free
to
travel
and
open
to
relocation.
I
would
welcome
the
opportunity
to
meet
you
and
to
further
discuss
DFI
Chemical
Corporation
and
how
I
may
be
beneficial
to
your
organization.
Please
call
me
at
to
arrange
an
interview
at
your
earliest convenience.
Sincerely,
