很久很久以前，在一个未开化的国家里，有个圆形的竞技场——这是国王审判犯人的地方。
竞技场内有两扇门，
一扇门关着饥饿不堪的老虎，
一扇门关着绝世美女。
一切交给老天爷决
定。
国王相信如果犯人无罪，
他应该会幸运选到美女，
选
到美女的则马上在竞技场内举行盛
大的婚礼，然后带美女远走高飞过幸福的日子；而选到
老虎的人，则马上会被老虎咬死。
国王有个美丽的女儿，
偏偏爱上一个平民青年。
国家规定王室跟
平民相恋是有罪的。
所以国
王发现后愤怒不已，
把这名平民关起来并抓到竞技场。同样的，一扇门内关了老虎，一扇门
内关了一
位美女。
这样无论他选择哪个门都不可能再与公主在一起，
这样
国王就可以放心了。
全国的人们涌
入竞技场观看，
国王在场，
公主也在场。
公主事前就已经知道哪一扇门后面是
老虎，哪一扇门是美女。她在看台上，脸色苍白。
青年望了她一眼，他知道公主一定知道两
扇门的秘密，他渴望公主给他一个方向。
然而，公主的内心挣扎万分。
她认识门后的那位美
女，那是宫中最美丽的女仆。她无法忘怀相爱的点滴，无法接受他与美女远走高飞，重新生

to walk directly to these doors
and
open one of them.
He could open
whichever door he pleased.
