或“拓宽”

）等一
类的动词连用。

a shame
如果以某个情况或行为为主语，
shame
前面又加上
不定冠词

，意思就大为减弱，表示“可
惜”
，完全没有“可耻”
、
“丢人”
的意思了。
【例如】

多可惜，酒吧都关了门。
It's a shame to waste all this
food
这些食品全都浪费掉太可惜了。
What a shame to die so
young
年纪轻轻就这样死去，多可惜

可惜你在生病。

■离婚

的用法
divorce
作为动词，最需要注意的是主动被动以及搭配的问题。中文习
惯说“同某人离婚”
，
但英文不说
to
divorce
with
some
body
，而是用
divorce
作为
及物动词，直接说
to
divorce
somebody
。
■
save
与
save on
save
的直接宾语是指全部节省下来的总量，
如果省下的只是总量中的一部分，
这个总量就不
可以作为直接宾语。比如说，原来保险费一百元，
现在可以节省一部分，
“节省保险费”就
不能说
save
the
pre
mium
，因为这样说就是一百元全部省了下来，免费保险。应该将
save
改为不及物动词，再加个
on
，说
save on the premium
（注意第三个例子）

与

两者作为形容词，意义大体相同。但是
only
< br>的“排他”性较强，否定其他同类事物在这个
场合的存在，
sole
则“内向”意义较强，强调本身的“专门、特地”性质。
说“独家代理”
，应该说

而不能说：
the
only representative
，因为所着
重的仍然
是本身的特性，而不是排外的否定。
“独项奖获得者”是
the
sole prize
winner
而不
能说：
the
only prize winner
，因为只设一项奖，这是奖本身的特性，并不排外
地强调“再也
没有别的奖”
。

sleep late
这是个延续性的状态动词，不是上床去睡觉的那一瞬时的动作
(go
to bed)
，也不是从清醒到
入睡的那一瞬时的变化
（
fall
asleep
或
get to sleep
）
。
这是中国人容易混淆的概念。
例如：
sleep
late
不是“很
晚才睡下来”
，而是“睡到很晚才起床”
。

作笼统的“社会”解，不带冠词。
【例如】
a danger to
society
社会隐患
Women's place in

妇女的社会地位
one beacon of sanity is all society
needs.
一座清醒的灯塔，就是社会所需的一切。
Americans are increasingly alienated
from society and from each other
美国人越来越脱
离社会
和互相脱离。
但是如果前面加上形容词呢？就要看加上哪一类的形容词。
原则上，
加了任何形容词，
就要
按照情况加上定冠词
the
或是不定冠词
a
。
【例如】
a pluralistic society
多元的社会
the consumer
society
消费社会。
但是，如
果加了形容词后，整个概念是人们熟悉的，就可以仍然不加冠词。
【例如】
Western
society
西力社会
ancient
society
古代社会
human
society
人类社会
modern
society
现代社会。

support
中文的兼语式，在英语有许多类似的结构，如：
want
，
tell
，
ask
，
beg
，
order.
instruct. permit.
forbid. want. warn.
invite. remind. . advise. commission. enable.
encourage. persuade.
like. wait for
，
help
，
push
等动词，都可以在其直接宾语后面再加上
to inf
．
（此时直接宾语成
为“兼语”
，即既兼宾语又兼主语）
。
但是动词
support
不属这类动词
，就是说，不能照中文“支持某人去做某事”的模式得出
#support somebody to do something
的搭配。
遇到这样的中文兼语式要译成英文，需要灵活处理，不能照搬，例如可以译成
support
someone in their
effort to inf
．
。同样，动词
< br>suggest
也不能有兼语式。
