In
the
mid-
1950s,
I
was
a
somewhat
bored
early-
adolescent
male
student
who
believed that doing any more than
necessary was wasted effort. One day, this
approach
threw me into embarrassment.
In
Mrs.
Totten's
eighth-
grade
math
class
at
Central
Avenue
School
in
Anderson,
Indiana, we were
learning to add and subtract decimals
(
小数
).
Our teacher
typically assigned daily homework, which would be
recited in class the
following day. On
most days, our grades were based on our oral
answers to homework
questions.
Mrs. Totten usually walked up and down
the rows of desks requesting answers from
student after student in the order the
questions had appeared on our homework sheets.
She would start either at the front or
the back of the classroom and work toward the
other
end.
Since I was
seated near the middle of about 35 students, it
was easy to figure out
which questions
I might have to answer. This particular time, I
had completed my usual
two or three
problems according to my calculations.
What I failed to expect was that
several students were absent, which threw off my
estimate.
As
Mrs.
Totten
made
her
way
from
the
beginning
of
the
class,
I
desperately
tried to
determine which math problem I would get. I tried
to work it out before she got
to me,
but I had brain freeze and couldn't function.
When
Mrs.
Totten
reached
my
desk,
she
asked
what
answer
I'd
got
for
problem
No.14.
“
I ...I
didn't get anything,
”
I
answered, and my face felt warm.
“
Correct,
”
she said.
It turned out that the
correct answer was zero.
3
What did I learn that day? First,
always do all your homework. Second, in real life
it
isn't always what you say but how
you say it that matters. Third, I would never make
it
as a mathematician.
If I
could choose one school day that taught me the
most, it would be that one.
4. What
does the underlined part in Paragraph 1 indicate?
A. It is wise to value one's time.
B. It is
important to make an effort.
C. It is
right to stick to one's belief.
D. It is enough
to do the necessary.
5. The author
could work out questions to answer since the
teacher always ________.
A. asked
questions in a regular way
B. walked up
and down when asking questions
C. chose
two or three questions for the students
D. requested her students to finish
their usual questions
6. The author
failed to get the questions he had expected
because ________.
A. the class didn't
begin as usual
B. several students didn't
come to school
C. he didn't try hard to
make his estimate
D. Mrs. Totten didn't
start from the back of the class
7.
Which of the following can be the best title for
the passage?
A. An Unforgettable
Teacher
B. A Future Mathematician
C.
An Effective Approach
D.
A Valuable Lesson
C
In the
depths of the French Guianese rainforest, there
still remain unusual groups of
indigenous(
土著的
)
people. Surprisingly, these people live largely by
their own laws and
their own social
customs. And yet, people in this area are in fact
French citizens because
it has been a
colony of the French Republic since 1946. In
theory, they should live by the
French
law. However, their remote locations mean that the
French law is often ignored or
unknown,
thus making them into an interesting area of
“lawlessness” in the world.
The
lives
of
these
people
have
finally
been
recorded
thanks
to
the
efforts
of
a
Frenchman
form
Paris
called
Gi
n.
Gin
spent
five
months
in
early

exploring
the
most remote corners of
this area, which sits on the edge of the Amazon
rainforest, with
half its population of
only 250,000 living in its capital, Cayenne.
“I ha
ve a
special love for the French Guianese people. I
have worked there on and off
for almost
ten years,” says Gin. “I’ve been able to keep firm
friendships with them. Thus
I have been
allowed to gain access to their living
environment. I don’t see it as a
l
awless
land. But rather I
see it as an area of freedom.”
4
“I wanted to
show the audience a photographic record touching
upon the uncivilized
life,”
continues
Gin.
“I
prefer
to
work
in
black
and
white,
which
allows
me
to
show
different specific
worlds more c
learly.”
His black-and-white pictures present a
world almost lost in time. These pictures show
people seemingly pushed into a world
that they were unprepared for. These local
citizens
now have to balance their
traditional self-supporting hunting lifestyle with
the lifestyle
offered by the modern
French Republic, which brings with
it
not only necessary state
welfare, but also alcoholism, betrayal
and even suicide.
8.
Why does the author feel
surprised about the indigenous people in French
Guiana?
A. They are separated from
t
he modern world.
B. They
often ignore the Guianese law.
C. They
seldom follow the French law.
D. They
are both Guianese and French citizens.
9.
Gin
introduced the special world of the indigenous
Guianese as _________.
A. a tour guide
B. a
photographer
C. a film director
D. a geographer
10
. What is Gin’s attitude
towards the lives of the indigenous
Guianese?
A. Cautious.
B.
Appreciative.
C.
Uninterested.
D. Doubtful.
11
.
What does the underlined word “it” in the last
pa
ragraph refer to?
A. The
uncivilized hunting.
B. The self-supporting hunting.
C. The modern French lifestyle.
D. The French Republic.
D
A
good
memory
is
an
important
asset
to
have
and
it
is
something
that
can
be
developed right from childhood. Playing
memory games on a regular basis offers a wide
range of benefits to kids. Even
children who do not have learning disabilities are
able to
retain information for longer
thanks to playing these memory games.
One
of
the
most
important
advantages
coming
from
playing
memory
and
mathematical games from a young age is
that they help develop the functionality of the
brain.
In
fact,
this
is
a
great
way
to
give
exercise
to
the
brain.
Scientists
have
also
observed
a
remarkable
increase
in
cogni
tive(
认知的
)skills
as
a
result
of
playing
these
games. Other advantages include
increase in short-term memory and improved ability
to
concentrate on tasks at hand. One of
the biggest obstacles to learning is an inability
to
focus on one’s work and to pay the
necessary att
ention to important
subjects.
Over
and
above
all
the
advantages
listed
above,
memory
games
for
kids
are
5
necessary because they make learning
fun and ensure that kids have a positive approach
towards learning and acquire a number
of skills that will help them for a long time to
come.
This
is
of
immense
importance
because
it
helps
kids
persevere
with
their
education as they grow
older and the difficulty levels of studying
increase.
Kids these days spend a great
deal of time playing video games and are quick to
start
playing
educational
games
as
well.
Interestingly,
many
parents
are
happy
to
let
them
switch from playing video games to
memory games on a computer or hand-held mobile
device.
There
are
many
different
types
of
memory
games
that
one
could
choose
for
one’s
kids.
However,
one
should
only
ever
give
age
appropriate
puzzles
and
mathematical
games to kids or else their motivation
levels to participate in them will drop over time.
In
short, a child who has been exposed
to memory games from a very young age is more
likely to do well in life.
12.
What does the underlined
word “retain” in Paragraph1 mean?
A. To continue to keep something.
B. To look carefully for something.
C. To read through something quickly.
D. To make plans for something to
happen.
13. Which of the following is
NOT the advantage of memory games?
A.
Making children interested in learning.
B.
Treating children’s
learning disabilities.
C.
Helping children concentrate on their study.
D.
Developing the
functionality of children’s brains.
14. The motivation of children will
drop if _______________.
A. they are
required to spend more time in studying
B.
there aren’t many
available interesting memory games
C. the memory games are only designed
for very little kids
D.
they
play memory games that aren’t
suitable
for them
15. What does the passage
mainly talk about?
A. The history of
the memory games.
B. The benefits of
the memory games.
C. The popularity of
the memory games.
D. The development of
the memory games.
