One

day

a

daughter

complained

to

her

father

that

her

life

was

miserable

and

that

she

how

She

was

tired

fighting

struggling

It

seemed just as one problem was solved, another one soon followed.

Her father, a chef, took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with water and placed each

on

high

fire.

Once

the

three

pots

began

to

boil,

he

placed

potatoes

in

one

pot,

eggs

in

the

second pot, and ground

He then let them sit and boil, without saying a word to his daughter.

After twenty minutes he turned off the burners. He took the potatoes out of the pot and placed

them in a bowl. He pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. He then ladled the coffee out

and placed it in a cup. Turning to her, he asked. “Daughter, what do you see?”

“Potatoes, eggs, and coffee,” she hastily replied.

“Look closer,” he said. She did and noticed that potatoes were soft. After pulling off the shell

of the egg, she found the hard-boiled egg. Finally, the rich aroma from the coffee brought a smile

to her face.

“Father, what does this mean?”She asked.

He then explained that the potatoes, the eggs and coffee beans had each faced the same

adversity

–

the boiling water.

However, each one reacted differently.

The potato went in strong, hard, and unrelenting, but in boiling water, it became soft and

weak.

The egg was fragile, with the thin outer shell protecting its liquid interior until it was put in

the boiling water. Then the inside of the egg became hard.

After

they

met

the

boiling

they

changed the water and created something new.

There was a man who had four sons. He wanted his sons to learn to not judge things too quickly.

So he sent them each on a quest, in turn, to go and look at a pear tree that was a great distance

away. The first son went in

the winter, the second in the spring, the third in summer, and the

youngest son in the fall.

When they had all gone and come back, he called them together to describe what they had

seen. The first son said that the tree was ugly, bent, and twisted. The second son said no - it was

covered with green buds and full of promise. The third son disagreed, he said it was laden with

blossoms that smelled so sweet and looked so beautiful, it was the most graceful thing he had

ever seen. The last son disagreed with all of them; he said it was ripe and drooping with fruit, full

of life and fulfillment.

The man then explained to his sons that they were all right, because they had each seen but

one season in the tree's life.

He told them that you cannot judge a tree, or a person, by only one season, and that the

essence of who they are - and the pleasure, joy, and love that come from that life - can only be

measured at the end, when all the seasons are up.

If you give up when it's winter, you will miss the promise of your spring, the beauty of your

summer, fulfillment of your fall. Don't let the pain of one season destroy the joy of all the rest.

Old age may not sound exciting. But recent findings offer good news for older people and for

people

worried

about

getting

older.

Researchers

found

that

people

become

happier

and

experience less worry after they reach the age of fact, they say by the age of 85, people are

happier with their life than they were when they were 18 years old.

The findings came from a survey of more than 340, 000 adults in the United States. The Gallup

Organization questioned them by telephone. At that time, the people were between the ages of

18 and researchers asked questions about emotions, like happiness, sadness and worry.

They also asked about mental

Arthur Stone in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University

levels

stress
