Design
Gauge design must be
completed in 3D STEP / AutoCad compatible
software.
Designs must be submitted to
Magna Seating
for customer /
Magna Seating
Quality
Assurance and Engineering approval prior to
fabrication. Design approval
does not
alleviate the vendor’s responsibility
fo
r ensuring all dimensions and
tolerances conform to component print as supplied.
Drawings to be submitted in
Auto Cad
format, design to be submitted in native CAD
format & then Step format to
Magna
Seating
once Gauge build is complete.
All checking Gauges must have 3
qualifying balls labeled A, B & C. A protective
cover must be provided. X, Y, and Z co-ordinates
relative to points of origin to be
stamped on the base. (See Verification)
Qualifying balls must be located in 3 of the 4
corners of the base plate. For larger gauges, the
qualifying balls may
require one
mounted on the longest edge of the Gauge base.
This must be approved by
Magna
Seating
prior to construction. Tooling
balls must be mounted on
a hardened &
ground surface, bolted & doweled in place.
All GO / NO GO pins are to
be identified with size and s
tamped
“GO” and “NOGO” accordingly.
All GO /
NO GO pins for slotted holes must be double ended.
One end for Width
“GO
/ NOGO
”
and
opposite end for Length
“
GO
/ NOGO
”
. All loose pins
shall be fastened into a Hexagonal aluminum
holder. Pins are to be
hard fastened
(no collets or bushings in holder). Design will
allow the removal of a pin should it become
necessary to repair. All checks to the part must
be
completed over the perimeter of the
base, all GO / NOGO pins, indicators, zero blocks
and sleeves must not protrude beyond the perimeter
of the base plate in
their check or
home position.
All feeler
gauges must be long enough to capture the entire
feature being measured & must be easily accessible
with the feeler.
All datum locating pins and
positional check pins must be the captive
retractable type & must retract a minimum of 4.0mm
below the bushing & lock in their
‘Home’
position.

All positional check pins
are to be inserted into Imperial standard size
steel hardened bushings. Slotted or square pins
are to be guided by hardened keys. All
pins to retract a minimum of 4.0 mm
below the top of the bushing & must retract via a
spring. Where springs are not feasible, check pins
must lock in their
retracted / “home”
position. Pins having a pilot size smaller than
3mm are to be as large as possible.
All tapered datum pins must
have angles between 5 to 10 degrees and secure
parts with taper running 10% undersized to 10%
oversize relative to minimum
and
maximum print hole / slot sizes.

All Gauges checking

checking clearance. (When mean
diameter
must deviate from 5mm, Magna approval is
required.) All feelers, pins & hand held attribute

When any captive (female)
or stab (male) pin(s) are retracted & the part to
be measured is loaded & clamped into place, there
must be a minimum of 12.70mm

not. Pins must be a one piece construction.

All clamps used on the gauge must be
IN-LINE (push pull toggle clamp), clamp tips must
be made of hardened ground steel & spring loaded.
(Refer to Exhibit D
on Page 10.)
Deviations from in-line clamps must be approved by
Magna. Blocks in which clamps are mounted on must
be bolted & doweled to the base plate.
Swing clamps are not permitted. In-line
clamps on swing arms with locking features are
permitted.

Clamping pressure must be
consistent across all gauges built for
Magna Seating
. Springs used
on clamps must be Tempered Steel Die Springs with
closed &
ground flat ends. Current
standard clamp springs are MP Series Die Springs
–
(Medium Pressure) or
equivalent.
A.
B.
C.
D.
Spring
pressure must be measured & set on the clamp /
Gauge at 185N.
A simple method to do
this is to mount the spring onto a jig & apply a
compression force of 185N.
Now measure
the overall length of the spring with the 185N
applied.
When installing the spring
onto the Gauge, ensure that the compressed length
of the spring is the same as measured on the jig
with 185N
applied. The spring must
displace the same on the Gauge with a part loaded
as was measured on the jig, this will ensure
consistent spring
pressure across all
Gauges. Tolerance of spring pressure is 180
–
190 N
Clamp
mounting blocks must be made of an upside down ‘T’
style, bolted & doweled in opposing corners at a
minimum. Clamp swin
g arms must lock in
the
clamping position using a lock pin
through the swing arm.
In-line clamp on swing arm in the
down & locked position.
Unlocked & swung out of
the
way to load part
NOTE:
Vendors are not to proceed with Gauge
build until design approval by Magna. Vendors are
required to submit designs for review prior to
construction. Review submission must
be in native CAD format.

Construction
Base plate to be aluminum Tooling
Plate, no less than 19.5mm (3/4”) thick
with machined perimeter. On larger gauges (in
excess of 28” in X, Y plane
&/or 20” in
the Z plane), base plate must be stable
and adequate for Gauge build-up and must be of
cast or welded aluminum construction.
All checking
Gauges must have provisions for storing of all
checking pins on the base plate. All GO / NOGO
shall be mounted directly onto the base and must
be
removable for servicing. Pins are to
be hardened and ground to size, pilot and bushing
sizes are to be Imperial standard sizes only. Pins
are to be hardened for
the entire
length of the pin, not just the tip / working
area.
Fixture operating instructions
are required on all fixtures. Each set of
instructions must depict each step. Instruction
sheets to be provided on standard 8?
x
11 paper with protective covers, and
provision be made to store sheets under the base
of the fixture. Instructions must include actual
photos of the fixture
in use, CAD
images are not permitted in the instructions.
All indicators must be battery operated
digit
a
l readout style.
(Mitutoyo # 543-683 is currently standard.)
Indicators used for profile checks must
have a zero block mounted to the baseplate.
Zero block must be mounted to the base
plate on the same plane in
which it is
used to measure.
For
indicators mounted on THK rail, the indicator’s
‘Home’ position must
provide provisions
for zeroing
with a locating
pin

All Gauges must have
identification plates, revision
plates
attached, Magna code,
latest customer part number, revision
level of gauge,
dates, and
“Property of
----------
”
must be stamped on base plate.
Gauge operating instructions are
required on all Gauges. Each set of instructions
must depict each step. Instruction sheets to be
provided on standard 8?

papers with protective covers, and
provision are made to store sheets under the base
of the Gauge. Instructions must illustrate how the
Gauge is to be loaded
& how each
characteristic verified by the gauge is performed.
Images must be pictures of the actual gauge,
screen shots of the CAD model are not permitted in
the instructions.

appropriately sized washer
between the
jam nuts & die spring
. Tips must adhere
to drawing specifications for datum target zones.
Clamps must locate directly over the datum pads.
For
products that prohibit this,
Magna Seating
shall
determine clamp location.
The socket
head cap screw used to mount spring & clamp tip to
the clamp shaft
must bottom out in the
shaft of the clamp.
All nuts
to lock clamp length must be double nutted, both
at the clamp shaft & the spring & washer. Mounting
of
toggle clamps with a jam nut must
have the jam nut on the opposite side of the
mounting surface than the toggle. Toggle clamp jam
nut must have access
for removal, jam
nut is not to be recessed into the material. The
