It

is

time

that

we

all

realized

that

we

are

the

secret

to

our

own

happiness.

Happiness is a choice that we make within. God loves us and gives each

one of us the ability to fill our lives with love, joy, peace,

happiness, and oneness with Him. We need only choose to do so moment by

moment and day by day.

It doesn’t matter what our outer circumstances are either, because the

Kingdom of Heaven is within us. Don’t

spend the rest of your life

searching the world for happiness then.

Just

look

in

the

mirror

and

laugh.

Just

let

the

happiness

flow

from

your

heart,

mind,

and

soul

until

it

fills your

life

and

the

lives

of

all

those

around you.

Oh, no. Here comes another study about happiness. We can't seem to do

enough of these paeans to cheerfulness. In the last few months alone, the

British Medical Journal suggested that having a happy close friend boosts our

own odds of being happy by 25%; the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society

B: Biological

Sciences pointed to evidence that optimism and pessimism are genetically

determined; and the website , which, according to its mission

statement,

application that allows users to keep a mobile

be grateful while driving).

The latest installment comes in the form of the Gallup Healthways Well-Being

Index, a huge poll (it used a random sample of 355,000 Americans) designed

to measure people's daily well-being and describe its correlation to where they

live

and

work.

The

survey

revealed

which

U.S.

states

(and,

indeed,

which

congressional districts within those states) were the healthiest and happiest in

six categories: life satisfaction, work quality, healthy behavior, physical health,

emotional health and basic access to necessities such as food and shelter.

The

big

winner

was

Utah,

followed

by

Hawaii,

Wyoming,

Colorado

and

Minnesota.

The

state

with

the

worst

sense

of

well-being

was

West

Virginia.

Michigan,

Ohio,

Mississippi

and

Kentucky

filled

out

the

list

of

the

five worst

states.

What

are we to

conclude

from

this?

Well,

let's

see:

Utah

happens

to

have

an

unemployment rate of 4.6%, versus the national average of 7.6% (according to

January

numbers).

West

Virginia,

for

its

part,

has

one

of

the

weakest

state

economies in the country. As for the congressional districts, California's 14th,

which

includes the lush, plush Silicon Valley cities of Palo Alto and Mountain

View,

ranked

first.

The

losers:

the

coal- mining

country

of

Kentucky's

5th

District

and

New

York's

16th

District,

which

includes

the

famously

blighted

South Bronx.

The study was concerned in large part with quality-of- life issues such as access

to outdoor recreation (hence the high marks for Utah and Hawaii) and access

to affordable housing and healthcare. But even though spokesmen for the poll

may not want to put that fine a point on it -- an Associated Press report said a

Gallup researcher was

study, but suspected that some of the variations are explained by income

appears

that

Randy

Newman

may

have

been

right

when

he

sang

money

that matters.

black

and

famous,

with

money

hangin

out

the

anus,

was

an

encomium

to

inner peace.

In either case, the current economic calamity has most of us poised for some

serious

unhappiness.

Even

if

we're

lucky

enough

to

have

avoided

unhappy

friends

or

pessimistic

genes

(not

so

for

me;

when I

was small,

my

father

sat

me down and told me

Life

Saver),

chances

are

most

of

us

are

suffering

some

measure

of

financial

anxiety. So does that doom us to West Virginia levels of misery?

Possibly.

When

I

submitted

to

an

assessment

on

,

which

asked

questions

such

as

how

often

I

felt

proud

of

myself

and

what

kind

of

mood

I

was

in

most

of

the

time,

I

scored

a

rather

grim

65

out

of

a

possible

100

(though I guess if I weren't a pessimist, I'd see 65 as a passing grade). It then

suggested I do an online exercise on

I

was

asked

to

quickly

solve

a

series

of

anagrams

and

then

record

how I

felt

about myself as I attempted to do so.

As

it

happened,

the

test

made

me

feel

terrible

about

myself.

Then

I

learned

that

all

but

two

of

the

anagrams

were

unsolvable

and

that

the

exercise

was

developed to help me

the adversity

In

other

words,

I

shouldn't

have

been

so

hard

on

myself

for

erroneously

surmising that

for

back and retook the happiness test and scored a 70.

Of

course,

even

if

I

were

one

of

the

few

people

who

appear

to

be thriving

in

this

economy

--

like

oil

company

executives

and,

rather

Dickensianly,

shoe

repairers (people are getting their shoes fixed rather than buying new ones) --

I'd probably still get a middling score on that test. And that's not just because

the

well-being

index

ranked

my

congressional

district

416th

out

of

435

(I

attribute

that

entirely

to

the

overcrowded

parking

lot

at

Trader

Joe's).

It's

because ultimately my father was right.

If

we

believe

the

results

of

many

of

these

studies,

which

suggest

that

life

satisfaction

is mostly a matter of perception, then happiness

is

an

illusion. It

also happens to be an illusion that can seem a lot more real when paired with

cash.

Now

excuse

me

while

I

drop

$$200

on

an

iPhone

so

I

can

start

that

mobile gratitude journal.

Work and happiness

Whether

work

should

be

placed

among

the

causes

of

happiness

or

among

the

causes

of

unhappiness

may

perhaps

be

regarded

as

doubtful

question.

There

is

certainly

much work which

is

exceedingly

irksome,

and an excess of work

is always

very painful. I

think,

however, that, provided

work

is

not excessive

in amount, even

the

dullest

work

is

to

most

people

less

painful

than

idleness.

There

are

in

work

all

grades,

from

mere

relief

of

tedium

up

to

the

profoundest

delights,

according

to

the

nature of the work and the abilities of the worker. Most of the work that

most people

have to do is not in itself interesting, but even such work has certain great advantages.

To begin with, it fills a good many hours of the day without the need of deciding what

one should do. Most people, when they are left free to fill their own time according to

their

own

choice,

are

at

a

loss

to

think

of

anything

sufficiently

pleasant

to

be

worth

doing.

Moreover,

the

exercise

of

choice

is

in

itself

tiresome.

Except

to

people

with

unusual

initiative,

it

is positively agreeable

to be

told what to do at each

hour of

the

day

,

provided

the

orders

are

not

too

unpleasant,

most

of

the

idle

rich

suffer

unspeakable

boredom

as

the

price

of

their

freedom

from

drudgery

.

Accordingly

the

more intelligent rich men work nearly as hard as if they were poor, while rich women

for

the

most

part

keep

themselves

busy

with

innumerable

trifles

of

whose

earth-shaking importance they are firmly persuaded.

The secret of happiness

Once there lived a king of great strength and wealth. Y

et he was not happy

. He told his

servants to find him things to make him happy

, but each came back saying,” Noting in

the world can

match the wonderful

things

you

have already

.”

Then

in that

land, there

lived a poor

man with a patch over one eye and a crutch to

help

him walk. Although

he

had

little,

he

was always

happy

.When

the king

heard of this,

he asked

the

man to

teach him his secret.

never push.

the

man replied,” and

I

never rush. Most of all,

I

never wish

for too

much.” Then he smiled and was

gone.

If

you would

make a

man

happy

, do

not

add to

his possessions but

subtract

from

his

desires.

Money and Happiness

Some people believe that money is the source of happiness. With money they can

buy everything they

need

in the world. They believe

money

is power. For example,

if

one

has

lots of

money

,

he can

go to a good

university

for better education and

have a

satisfactory job after

graduation,

make even

more

money

,

and buy a

luxurious

house

or whatever he desires. No doubt he will live happily.

However, some people hold (

坚持

) that there are things that money cannot buy

,

such as

health,

happiness and

friendship. What

is worse,

money can be

the root of all

evil

.

As the common saying

goes,

“A

man

may

go astray

(

走错路

;

误入歧途

) once

he

makes

much

money;

a

woman

may

become

rich

once

she

becomes

loose

in

morals.”

A

too

strong

desire

for

money

and

improper

use

of

money

can

lead

to

disaster.

In

my

opinion,

money

is

very

important.

We

cannot

buy

anything

without

money.

But

money

is

not

everything.

What

money

will

bring

you

depends on your belief and goal in life. If you earn your money by hard and

honest work, and use it to improve your living standards, and also use it for

the

benefit

of

others

as

well,

then

you

may

get

true

happiness.

On

the

other hand, if your lifelong goal is to make money and use your money only

for your own needs, you’ll become selfish and will never really feel happy.

happyness

There

is something

in the world. It

has

no shape,

no color and no

weight. It can’t be

seen or

touched. But everyone wants

it

very

much. People try to

get

it

in

many

ways.

Some

people

think

money

means

it,

so

they

try

to

make

more

money;

some

people

believe

that

knowledge

can

bring

it

to

them,

so

they

study

very

hard;

some

other

people find only good health can make themselves get it, so they take part in all kinds

of sports and games. Now, you may ask what on earth the mysterious (

神秘的

)thing is.

That

s HAPP

INESS. I can’t give you the exact meaning of happiness, but I’m sure if

you love and help others, you’ll get it.

I’ll

never

forget

an

old

lady

.

She

lives

in

a

small

house

alone.

It’s

said

that

her

husband and

her son died

in a traffic accident. What a sorrow

life she has!But the old

lady

often

helps

others

with

a

smile.

Whenever

it

snows,

she

is

always

the

first

to

clean

the

paths

(

小路

).

She

looks

after

several

children

living

nearby

.

I

am

one

of

them.

I

often

remember

the

stories

she

told

us

and

her

kind

smile.

Perhaps

she

is

unlucky

, but I think she is a happy person. Her life is full of laughter and love.

But

I

m sad to see some people

getting their

happiness

in bad ways. They speak

loudly

in cinemas and

meeting

rooms;

they destroy

(

损坏

)

trees

to enjoy themselves

and they laugh at others

shortcomings. Perhaps they feel happy at that time, but they

will ne

ver get true happiness because they have destroyed others’ happiness.

Now I know what

happiness

is. It

means kindness,

love and

unselfishness.

Above

all, only bringing happiness to others can make yourself happy

.

Happiness

Happiness

is the

most precious

thing

in the world, which can be obtained

in different

ways.

From my point of view, being in a good mood anytime and anywhere is the first thing

for those who want to be

happy

.

There

is an old saying

going

like this,

is

he

who

is

content.

I

can't

agree

with

it

any

more.

I

still

remember

a

story

my

mother

told me when I was a child. A millionaire tried every means to seek after pleasure but

to

feel

unhappy

.

It's

not unique, but

has

its counterpart that poor

men

to whose

name

not

having a

thing

always

feel

happy

. Why

are

they so different?

The answer

is that

the rich

is being thinking

how he can

gain

more

while the poor

is satisfied with what

he owns at hand-health, freedom, love and so on.

Furthermore, love makes great difference to happiness. If you have love in your heart,

you will have happiness in your life. Love consists of two parts, one is to love others,

and

the other

is

to be

loved by others.

Lei Feng

set a

good example

for all of

us.

He

served the people wholeheartedly until the last minute of his life. He regarded serving

the people as

the

happiest

thing.

There

are

numbers of

similar

inspirational stories to

be found.

In addition, being

loved by others can also

lead

you

to

happiness. Courage

from

your

parents

when

frustrated,

care

from

your

lover

when

ill,

help

from

your

friends when in trouble… all of these will make you the happiest person in the world.

The last but not least is to act happily

. Putting on a happy face and thinking interesting

things are helpful to trigger happy feelings.

Wile happiness is precious, it is easy to get.

What is happiness

Read by Phillip Short

Are you happy?

I asked my brother, Ian, one day.

Yes. No. It depends on what you mean,

he said.

Then tell me,

I said,

when was the last time you were happy?

April 1947.

he said.

It served me right for putting a serious question to someone who has joked

his

way

through

life.

But

Ian

s

answer

reminded

me

that

when

we

think

about happiness, we usually think of something extraordinary, a pinnacle of

sheer delight. And those pinnacles seem to get rarer the older we get.

For a chila, happiness has a magical quality. I remember making hideouts in

newly cut hay, playing cops and robbers in the wood, get a speaking part in

the school play. Of course, kids also experience lows, but their delight at

such

peaks

of

pleasure

as

winning

a

race

or

getting

a

new

bike

is

unreserved.

In

the

teenage

years,

the

concept

of

happiness

changes.

Suddenly

it

s

conditional on such things as excitement, love, popularity and whether that

zit will clear up before a prom night. I can still feel the agony of not being

invited to a party that almost everyone else was going to. But I also recall

the

ecstasy

of

being

plucked

from

obscurity

ar

another

event

to

dance

with a John Travolta look-alike.

In

adulthood

the

things

bring

profound

joy

birth,

ove,

marriage

also

bring responsibility and the risk of loss. Love may not last. Loved ones die.

For adults, happiness is complicated.

My dictionary defines happy as

lucky

or

fortunate,

but I think a better

definition of

happiness is

the capacity for enjoyment.

The

more we can

enjoy what we have, the happier we are. It

s easy to overlook the pleasure

we get from loving and being loved, the company of friends, the freedom to

live where we please, even health.

I added up my little moments of pleasure yesterday. First there was sheer

bliss when I

shut

the last lunchbox and

had the

house

to

myself. Then I

spent an uninterrupted

moring writing, which I love. When the kids

came

home, I enjoy their nosie after the quiet of the day.
