When I was about fifteen, I read Of
Human Bondage by W. Somerset Maugham. At
the time, I was living in a small town
in Western Colorado, where my father was a
minister (
牧师
). My
older sister, Alice, had died in a car accident
and I was trying to
find
the
answer
to
that
age-old
qu
estion:
“Why
do
bad
things
happen
to
good
5
people?”I
don't remember now how I got my hands on Of Human
Bondage, but once
I did, I couldn't put
it down. I believe it is Maugham's best work. It
tells the life story
of
Philip
Carey
and
his
search
for
meaning
in
life.
After
Carey's
parents
die,
he
is
sent to live with his
aunt Louisa and uncle William Carey in a small
village.
I still remember
how
I
was
mesmerized
by it.
I often read the book late into the
night,
thinking
about
Philip
as
if he were a
close friend.
I
often hurried
home after
school to discover what was happening
to him.
About
one-third
into
the
story,
I
took
a
pen
and
began
underlining
passages
that
spoke to me. Even
though the book came out in 1915, ten years before
I was born, it
describes me and my
feelings.
