“Wanted:
Violin.
Can’t pay much. Contact…”
I rarely read the classified
advertisements, so why did I notice that one? I
laid the paper on
my lap and closed my
eyes, remembering what had happened many years
before, during the Great
Depression
when my family struggled to make a living on our
farm. I, too, had wanted a violin.
When
my older twin sisters began showing an interest in
music, Harriet Anne learned to play
Grandma’s piano, while Suzanne turned
to Daddy’s violin. Simple tunes became lovely
melodies.
My baby brother danced; Daddy
hummed and Mother whistled. I just
listened.
Whe
n my arms grew
long enough, I tried to play Suzanne’s violin. Oh,
how I wanted one!
But I knew it was out
of the question.
One evening as the
twins played in the school orchestra. I closed my
eyes tight to capture the
picture
firmly in my mind. Someday, I’
ll sit up
there, I vowed silently.
It was not a
good year. At harvest the crops didn’t bring as
much as we had hoped. Yet even
though
times
were
hard,
I
couldn’t
wait
any
longer
to
ask,
“Daddy,
may
I
have
a
violin
of
my
own?”
“Can’t you
use Suzanne’s?”
“I’d like to
be in the orchestra too, and we can’t both use the
same violin at the same time.”
Daddy’s face looked sad. That night,
and many following nights, I heard him remind God
in
our family prayers,
“…
and Lord, Mary Lou wants her own
violin.”
One evening we all
sat round the table. The twins and I studied.
Mother sewed and Daddy
wrote a letter
to his friend, George Finkle, in Columbus, Ohio.
Mr Finkle, Daddy said, was a fine
violinist.
When Daddy
received a letter from Columbus a few weeks later,
he ask
ed me, “Mary Lou,
do
you want to go with me to visit
Mr
Finkle?”
He drove us to
Columbus and we came to a fine, old house. A tall
man opened the door. He
and Daddy
heartily shook hands, both talking at once.
“Mary
Lou,
I’ve
been
hearing
things
about
you.
Y
our
Daddy
has
arranged
a
surprise for
you!” He picked up a case,
opened it, lifted out a violin and started to
play. The melody surged
and spoke like
waterfalls. Oh, to play like him, I thought.
Finishing the piece, he turned to
Daddy. “I found it in a
paw
nshop
(当铺)
for
seven dollars.
It’s a good violin. Mary
Lou should be able to make a beautiful music with
it.” Then he handed
the violin to me.

Paragraph 1:
I noticed the
tears in Daddy’s eyes as I finally comprehended.
It was mine!
“It’s
beautiful.” I
said, barely breathing. I
knew
Daddy’s
prayer, and
mine, had been answered. Back home, I
practiced daily, feeling no tiredness.
When I was ready to join the school orchestra, I
trembled
with excitement. Daddy and
Mother smiled proudly in the audience at their
little girl who held her
cherished
violin for the whole world to admire. The years
seemed to run more swiftly then. I
packed my violin in its case and
stepped into the grown-
up world.
Nurse’s training, marriage,
working,
bringing up four daughters filled my years. Yet
none of my children cared about the
violin.
Paragraph 2:
I forced my thoughts to the present and
read again the advertisement. Laying the paper
aside,
I went to find my violin. And I
dialed the number. Later that afternoon, an old
car stopped in my
driveway. A man in
his thirties with a young girl knocked on the
door. “I’ve been pr

would answer my
advertisement. My daughter wants a
violin so badly.” He said, “How much are
you asking?” “Seven dollars,” I said. I
handed the case to the girl. She opened the case
and
touched the violin lightly as it
caught the glow of the late-afternoon sun. Then
she threw her arms
round her smiling
father.

A few
weeks before Thanksgiving one year, my then-
husband and I decided to invite a guest
over for the holiday. I called a senior
center and they suggested Ilse, a woman I imagined
would
be quiet, soft-spoken.
Unexpectedly, she was a stubborn 78-year-old
gambler (

).
On
Thanksgiving, within minutes of arriving, Ilse
threw her oversized purse on the kitchen
counter and, with a wide smile,
welcomed the glass of wine my husband offered. We
felt as if she
were an old friend after
dining. Two weeks later, I invited her to lunch.
The more time I spent with
Ilse, the
more she became like a grandma. She

was finally going to have children
.
“You’re not getting any younger,” she’d
say.
I soon became her
personal driver. And I noticed the more favors I
agreed to do, the more she
asked of me.
Six months after we met, I called her only child,
Ralph for help, but he claimed he
didn’t have time. I doubted his “I’m
too busy” excuse. A few months later, Ralph
passed away.
After the
funeral, having realized Ilse was too upset to be
left alone, I helped her hire a caregiver.
She was like family to me, I felt
responsible for her. And I was the only one left
in her side.
Each time I stopped by her
apartment, Ilse seemed more disconnected than the
time before.
Late one afternoon, she
called from the emergency room to tell me she had
tripped over her coffee
table.

told my husband to say I
wasn’t home. I was still angry and
hurt.

He

Patagonia, Arizona, a town near the U.S.-Mexico
border, and covered the grass was a
balloon
—
or at least the
remains of one. Heiss walked toward it
with his dog, Feliz, thinking he should
pick up the latex (
乳胶
)
pieces and throw them away.
That’s when he noticed the balloon’s
string was attached to a piece of
paper.
“
Dayami
,” it read
on one side, in a child’s writing. A
hand
-drawn bow accompanied the word.
Heiss turned the paper over quickly. It
was a numbered list, all in S
panish.
“My Spanish isn’t
very good, but I
could see it was a Christmas list
,” he
said.
Heiss was charmed. He
thought that a child had tried to send Santa Claus
a Christmas wish list
by balloon,
something he used to do himself when he was a kid.
Nobody had ever returned the
letters
Heiss had sent into the air, but he wondered
whether he couldn’t
find the child who
had sent
this one.
It would
be difficult, but Heiss knew about 20 miles to the
southwest, just across the border,
was
the
city
of
Nogales,

a
population
of
about
a
quarter
million.
“Based

(

, I was
pretty sure that’s where it came from,” he
said.
Heiss brought the note
home to his wife, who is fluent in Spanish and
helped him translate the
list. They
determined that Dayami, probably a girl, had asked
for a doll, a dollhouse, clothes, and art
supplies among other things.
Heiss
then
posted
about
his
request
on
the
Internet,
attaching
photos,
hoping
some
of
his
friends in Nogales might
know the girl’s
family.
A
few days passed with no leads; Heiss worried that
time was running out before Christmas.
Therefore, he decided to send a private
message to Radio XENY, an AM radio station based
in
Nogales if they could help.

help us?” I pointed to the wheel.
She
stared
at
it,
and
then
made
a
gesture
to
follow
her
back
to
the
jungle. George
and
I looked at each other, and then set
off after her.
Soon we came to a tent
under some trees. It had a firm framework of
wooden poles, like the
one the woman
was carrying, covered with heavy cloth, and
fastened with rope made of some kind
of
loose plant fiber. All round were corn plants. It
was harvest time for the grain, and a spade, a
fork and other tools were lying on the
ground. Nearby were some chicks and a rooster, and
a pig
tied to a post.
The
woman
folded
back
a
cloth
and
invited
us
in.
My
eyes
had
to
adjust
to
the
darkness
inside. The tent was furnished with a
few mats on the floor, and a low table with a
teapot. She
picked up a photo and
showed it to us. Was it her husband? The man in
the photo was bare to the
waist.
He
looked
much
too
young.
She
was
probably
a
widow
(
寡妇
).
Maybe
her
son
or
her
nephew?
Our hostess poured some tea, and
watched smiling as we drank.
“Say
something,” said George.

Paragraph 1:
I

the sound of footsteps out of the tent. We both
looked up. It was exactly the young man
in the photo but looked much stronger. The woman

“Need

he
asked.
It’s
amazing
he

I looked at each other, eyes lit up.
“Yes, and we were
wondering if you
could have one of our tyres changed.”
“Follow
me!” he said,
sounding like sort
of an order.
Paragraph 2:
We got up and
together walked back to the car. The man grabbed
the wheel with one hand
and a spanner
with the other. With an outburst of shout, the
tyre was loosened up. “You just need a
bit of ef
fort. Haha!” George
and I stood there dumfounded watching him
finishing the whole job,
gratitude and
admiration rushing in my heart. The knot that had
been tired up by the pain in my
foot,
the cold soaking rain and the stubborn flat tyre
was loosened up too, in the warm tea from the
woman, the heroic shout of the man, the
mountain view in the distance and the joy of being
able
to set off again.

Jeremy
couldn’t believe his luck. The morning of his 6th
grade field trip to the Rose
Center
for
Earth
and
Space
at
the
Museum
of
Natural
History,
he
fell
ill.
“This
can’t
be,”
he
thought.
“Science is my favorite subject, and
I’m not going to be able to visit the museum?” He
pleaded
(
恳求
) with
his parents to let him go to school anyway, but
they were firm in their refusal. “The
sooner
you
rest
at
home,
the
sooner
you’ll
get
better,”
his
mother
said.
“Don’t
be
so
hard
on
yourself.
Now take this medicine and go lie back
down.”
Jeremy closed his
eyes as he swallowed the white tablet. Even though
it was sunny outside,
he felt a black
cloud hovering (
盘旋
) over his
head, threatening stormy weather inside his brain
and making him angry. But soon after he
lay in bed, the medicine his mother had given him
began
working, and he fell asleep
almost right away.
When Jeremy awoke,
his room was bathed in darkness. When he looked
out of his window,
he saw stars
shinning in the dark sky. Then Jeremy’s dad walked
into his room with a smile on his
face.
“You’re awake, Jeremy,” he said.
“What
time
is
it?
Did
I
miss
everything?”
Jeremy
asked.
His
father
put
a
hand
on
his
forehead and checked for a temperature.
Nothing. “Not at all, in fact, you’re just in time
for your
field trip. If you’re feeling
better, that is.” Jeremy jumped out of bed and did
a little dance. H
is
energy
was back. “I’m feeling fine,” he said. “Great. Now
put on a sweater and follow me,” said
Jeremy’s dad.
Jeremy checked the time as he was
getting dressed. 8:05 pm. It didn’t make any
sense. Where
could he possibly be going
with his father so late in the day? Surely the
museum was closed. But
Jeremy didn’t
slow down. He dressed and met his father in the
living room, where he was sitting
with
a man he had never met before.

“Because you missed your field trip

couldn’t believe his ears. “I’m ready!” he shouted

“You

asked Professor
Helfand. “I can’t wait,” Jeremy
answered, with a smile on his face as bright as a
hundred suns.
