Passage 1
Today I can still remember how I became
good table tennis player.
The first day
I went to high school, I saw some of my classmate
playing table tennis.
Amazing
at
how
skillful
they
were,
I
was
determined
to
be
just
as
good.
Later
on,
I
often
watched
them
carefully
to
learn
our
techniques.
Then
I
kept
practicing
while
I
became
confidently
enough
to challenge the good players. At the
end of the term I became one of the best players
of my
class.
I really take
proud in this experience, because it helped me
realize that we all can fulfill
our
potential and achieve to our goals
through hard work. It also helps me better
understand the
proverb
Passage 2
How
can a person recover from emotional problems? A
popular opinion suggests that he watches
humorous films. And a recent study
proves this to be wrong. The study also shows that
watching
at
sad
films
can
make
getting
over
a
negative
mood
a
easier
job.
Emotional
experiences
is
important
to
people’s well
-being. People are less
likely to share their feelings with these who have
had
similar experiences. Similar,
people prefer movies that reflect their
mood. That’s the reason
^a
sad film can contribute to comfort a sad person
more than a pleasant one.
Passage 3
I used to be a
very self-centered person, but in the past two
years I really
changed. I
have
started to think about other
people after I think about myself. I am happy that
I am becoming
the different person.
I think my change started when I was at
Palomar College. At first, I just want to get my
degree and be left alone. I thought I
was smarter than everyone else, so I hardly ever
talked
to anyone in my classes. By
the end of my first semester, I was really lonely.
That seemed as
if everyone besides me
had made friend and was having fun. So I tried an
experiment. I started
asking people
around me how they were doing, and whether they
were having trouble, I offered
to help.
That was real a big step for me. By the end of the
year, I had several new friends,
two of
them are still my best friends today.
Passage 4
My
friend Davis kept birds. He asked me to feed them
for him in one day because he would
be
away for a week. He said that he have left the key
in his mailbox. Unfortunately, I forgot
all
about
birds
until
the
night
before
Davis
were
to
return.
What
was
worse,
it
was
already
dark
when I arrived at his house. I soon
found the key left by Davis can’t unlock either
the front
door nor the back door.
I was getting worrying.
I
was just about to
give up while I
noticed
that
one bedroom
window was slightly open. I climbed up and opened
the window. Just then a policeman
and
one of Davis’ neighbor arrived. I felt like a
completely fool at that time.
Passage 5
I
often
go
to
a
weekend
school.
So
did
many
of
my
classmates.
This
seems
popular
among
students.
Good weekend
schools have excellent teachers which help us
improve our studies. Besides, we get
to
know students from another schools and learn about
their campus of life.
So every coin has
two sides. Our school work is already a heavy
burden. Extra lesson often
take
up
too
much
of
our
time.
In
addition,
pay
lots
of
attention
to
the
extra
lessons
will
affect
their school
subjects. We may also find ourselves very tired on
Mondays to concentrate on the
lessons
in our own school.. We should think seriously
about this issue and make best use of our
time.
Passage 6
In
recent
years,
studying
abroad
has
been
popular.
Many
students
are
trying
his
best
to
go
abroad.
There are many Ladies and gentlemen,
It is special pleasure to welcome our
new staff member, Mr Tony White, who has come here
to
America.
Mr White has
recently graduated from the University of Chicago
where he has majored in English
Literature and minored in Teaching
English as the Second Language. He will working
with us here
for at least two years.
One of the goals of our school are to
promote understanding and cooperation between the
young
people of our two countries. By
have Mr White, who is willing to sacrifice the
comfort of his
friends and family to
come to a strange country, we feel we are very
lucky and our goals will
be easily
realized.
On behalf of the whole
school, I’d like to extend to you, Mr White, your
sincerest welcome.
We are indeed happy
to have you here, and we wish you all the better
during your stay in China.
Thank you.
Passage 7
Dear
Sir
,
Thank
you
for
invite
me
to
the
summer
English
course
in
your
school.
As
for
your
choice
between
the two courses, I
prefer the four-week course because of this will
allow me more time to do
some traveling
but make a few new friends. Of all the
sub
ject I’m learning at school, I like
English
best.
I
had
been
learning
English
for
eleven
years
but
my
spoken
English
remains
poorly.
So I really hope to take this chance
improve it. If possible, I’d like to stay with a
family
for a couple of days in order
that I can know some customs in
England, that I’m particularly
interested in. I believe I will have
wonderful time this summer.
