On
a
typical
hot
August
day
in
Xianyou
County,
Fujian
Province,
Zeng
Demei,
a
retired
worker
in
his
seventies, hurries down a busy street.
In his hand is a black leather bag. Zeng opens his
bag, taking out two forms.
77
Each of the forms contains detailed
information of a student. On his arrival two hours
later a woman greets
him and leads him
to her office where another man is waiting. They
are the two village officials. They inspect the
forms handed to them by Zeng and
immediately recognize the girls.
78
“It’s a pity but it doesn’t
matter,”
says
Zeng, who
wastes no time in deciding to look for the
remaining child, Su Qinju.
After half
an hour, they stop outside a small house made of
mud brick. A middle-aged man and a girl in a
faded pink dress greet them. Su Qiuju

school after both her parents
died.

took
part
in
a
campaign
started by the local women’s organization to help
students from poor families. He was so overcome
by
the tough situation of
many poor children that he donated all his money
to help out a girl.
His task had begun
and since then he has spent his time persuading
his friends and neighbors and others to
donate money. “To me, children’s
education is the most important.

I have to find sufficient funding
before
the school open
s in
September.”
When asked how
long he will keep up his vital work as the
community’s guardian angel, he has a
simple
reply,
“Not until my

can’t move

The time-out
(
暂停
) is a method to punish
your children’ s misbehavior
(
不当行为
). Children are taken
away
from their present situation for a
few minutes. During the time-out they are put in a
place and not allowed to do
anything.
It’s a great way to help your ch
ildren
calm down and realize their shortcomings.
31
.
Decide what is
worth a time-out
Find a quiet moment to
discuss a time-out principle for your family,
determining where
you’ll give time
outs,
for what reasons, and for how
long.
32
,
And you can make your first time-out feel prepared
and calm.
Give a warning
Instead of suddenly giving a
time-
out to your children, warn them
that they’ll get one if
they continue
to be
naughty.
33
. At
this
age
children
are
often
angry
without
realizing
it.
Giving
them
a
time
out
can
make
them
calm.
Some
kids
dislike
time-outs
very
much,
so
that
finally
the
warning
itself
does
the
job.
However,
warnings are not
enough. When your children hit, kick, or bite
someone, use a time-out right away.
It’s a good idea to
choose a
time-out place, such as a chair or the end of a
hallway. But remember that the
place
you choose needs to be safe and shouldn’t be
frightening
.
Decide how long
time-outs will last
35
. Your children should have enough time
to stop misbehaving and calm down. If it is too
short or too
long, your children may
forget the punishment or become upset. Many
experts advise one minute per year of your
children’s age. You can watch the clock
yourself or
set an alarm clock and tell
them that the punishment is over
when
it rings.
A. Select a place
B Use time-out regularly
C.
A time-out needs enough time
D. You
needn’t make decisions in a hurry
E. Here are a few ways to make it work
for you
F. Give your children hugs and
kisses after the time-out
G
.
This gives them a chance to control their own
behavior first

Here are five
cooking habits that could be costing you important
nutrients, causing you to
overeat
——
or even
making you sick.
Boiling vegetables
A
2015

that
boiling
vegetables
resulted
in
a
high
loss
of
vitamin
C.
36
you're
not
drinking a soup, you're missing out on
nutrients,
Washing chicken
While your favourite old cookbooks
likely tell you to wash a chicken before cooking,
this outdated advice is a
safety
risk.
Cleaning
meat
in
water
may
remove
some
of
the
bacteria,
but
it's
also
likely
to
pass
it
around
your
kitchen.
37
And clean your hands after you've
finished the cooking.
Removing skins
from fruits and vegetables
amounts
of
nutrients
are
found
in
the
skins.
says
Liz
Powell,
who
is a
dietitian
from
Vancouver.
Concern about chemical
remains isn't a good enough reason to do the
removing.
38
Mixing
everything
A
smoothie
(a
mixed
drink)
is
a
smart
way
to
eat
some
greens.
39
They're
often
short of
protein
and
healthy fat. These
things work together to keep us feeling full and
satisfied. Without them, it's not really a
balanced
meal, Powell suggests adding
some foods which contain protein or having a piece
of wholewheat(
全麦的
)bread on
the side.
Overdressing
salads
We think we can add anything to
salads, and they'll still be a nutritious choice.
But it's just not true. If you're
topping
your
bowl
with
dried
strawberries
and
sweet
cheese,
you've
easily
added
30
grams
of
sugar
to
your
so-called healthy
lunch.
40
A. You should
choose healthy produce for your family.
B. But these kinds of drinks are likely
to be unbalanced.
C. To stay safe,
don't wash the meat when preparing it.
D. Cabbage. for example, loses about 33
% of its vitamin C.
E. Nuts are better
choices to improve the taste of your greens.
F. The skins of potatoes contain more
nutrients than its inside part.
