One fall

my wife Elli and I had a single goal:to photograph polar bears. We were staying at a research camp

outside “the polar bear capital of the world”

-the town of Churchill in Manitoba

Canada.

Taking pictures of polar bears is amazing but also dangerous. Polar bears-like all wild animals-should be

photographed from a safe distance. When I'm face to face with a polar bear

I like it to be through a camera with a

telephoto lens. But sometimes

that is easier said than done. This was one of those times.

As Elli and I cooked dinner

a young male polar bear who was playing in a nearby lake sniffed

and smelled our

garlic bread.

The hungry bear followed his nose to our camp

which was surrounded by a high wire fence. He pulled and bit

the wire. He stood on his back legs and pushed at the wooden fence posts.

Terrified

Elli and I tried all the bear defense actions we knew. We yelled at the bear

hit pots hard

and fired

blank shotgun shells into the air. Sometimes loud noises like these will scare bears off. Not this polar bear though-he

just kept trying to tear down the fence with his massive paws(

爪子

).

I radioed the camp manager for help. He told me a helicopter was on its way

but it would be 30 minutes before

it arrived. Making the best of this close encounter(

相遇

< br>)

I took some pictures of the bear.

Elli and I feared the fence wouldn't last through 30 more minutes of the bear's punishment. The camp manager

suggested I use pepper spray. The spray burns the bears' eyes

but doesn't hurt them. So I approached our uninvited

guest slowly and

through the fence

sprayed him in the face. With an angry roar(

吼叫

)

the bear ran to the lake to

wash his eyes.

The Meredith family lived in a small community. As the economy was in decline, some people in the town had

lost their jobs. Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet. People were trying to help each other meet

the challenges.

Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor. She knew

they had problems, and they needed all kinds of help. When she had time, she would bring food and medicine to them.

One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in bed, his

wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The little boy -his name was Bernard-had

interested her very much.

“I wish you could see him,” she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara. “He is such a help to his mother.

He wants very much to earn some money, but I

don't see what he can do.”

After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Bernard. “I wish we could help him to earn

money,” said Clara. “His family is suffering so much.”

“So do I,” said Harry. “We really should do something to assist them.”

For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and cried, “I have a great idea! I have

a solution that we can all help accomplish(

The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had an idea, it was sure to

be a good one. “I tell you

what we can do,” said John. “You know that big box of corn Uncle John sent us? Well, we can make popcorn(

Danger at Scituate Lighthouse

Rebecca stood by her father, looking out the windows of Scituate Lighthouse. Low sand dunes(

grass topped the Massachusetts beach. There were no clouds in the sky

nothing at all to give warning of the danger

that was sailing toward them.

and take care of things while I go to town for food and supplies. I won’t be gone

long.

Still, Mr. Bates looked a little worried about leaving the lighthouse. After all, peace between the US and the UK

had not yet been declared, even though the war of 1812 was nearly over. Although English warships used to

frequently attack towns along the coast

including Scituate

no English soldiers had been sighted for a long time.

Besides, Rebecca thought as she watched her father set off, the family would soon starve if he didn’t go for

food.

Her father hadn’t been gone long when Rebecca happened to look out the window at the ocean. What she saw

nearly made her heart stop. It was an enemy ship: a small, light- gunned British warship. Calling for her mother, she

grabbed her father’s telesc

ope and could just make out the name painted on the side: La Hogue.

Rebecca, Abigail, and their mother stood together, frightened, as they watched the ship sail closer. Mother told

the girls to watch the ship while she tried to sound the alarm and warn the home guard in the nearby village. The girls

watched helplessly as the great ship drew near. Two small boats were lowered off the side, and Rebecca knew the

boats would come ashore quickly.

It was time to run. As they ran down the lighthouse stairs, Rebecca suddenly stopped when she saw her fife(

). Oh my! She thought. It just might work… Rebecca grabbed the fife and the drum(

) that Abigail had been

learning to play.

Paragraph 1

She and her sister hurried out of the lighthouse and over to the large sand dunes that lay behind it.

A dawning sun shaped the massive form of the train. Loaded with fuel, water, and sand for power, the lead train

weighed in at 410,000 pounds. Conductor Robert, 49, ran his eye along the 96 cars behind him.

It was 7 a.m. Robert had already checked the list of dangerous materials aboard the train. ''We've got some gas

with us,'' he'd reported to his engineer, Lindley, in the cab (

驾驶室

). The presence of gas would mean taking extra

care when braking the 6,200-ton train. With explosive gas on board, an accident would be more dangerous. After a

final external inspection, Robert jumped aboard. Slowly the train pulled out of the station.

Robert and Lindley had 50 years of railroading experience between them. They approached Lafayette at about

1:45 p. m. and slowed the train to the speed limit. Lindley turned on his flashing lights and warning bell. The two had

been through the city hundreds of times, but they grew extra cautious rounding the first curve (

弯道

). Ahead, over just

three miles of track, lay no fewer than 24 street crossings. As the train came out of the curve, Lindley noticed a small

dot on the right rail about 150 yards ahead. He thought it might be a dog. Now, as the train approached within 100

yards of the object on the rail, Robert looked attentively. Then shock coursed through him.

''My God!'' he yelled as a tiny face turned toward him. ''It's a baby!''

Lindley had an instant decision to make, applying full emergency brakes with half the train still wrapped around

a curve. He had to risk an emergency stop. Robert opened the left door of the engine cab quickly and stepped out onto

a narrow walkway. He hurried to the front of the engine and crossed to the right side. He then stepped down to the

lower portion of the walkway just to the back of the train's ''cow catcher''.

Telling himself he still had a job to do, Robert went back to check on the cars.

Last year, I spent my holiday in an unfamiliar neighborhood in Lakewood, New Jersey. We rented a house so

that some of our children and grandchildren could join us. Everyone in the area was super friendly, offering to come

to introduce themselves to us and to ensure that we would make full use of their hospitality, whether to borrow

something or to send the kids to play in their yards. We were excited and impressed and immediately began to see if

there were any houses for sale in the neighborhood!

The next door to us was particularly fascinating (to visit not to buy). In the yard, there was a tennis court, a swing

set and various toys and games that were particularly popular with young children. The owner was also very friendly

and invited the kids to come over and play.

They didn't have to be asked twice. They played for hours on end. While we relaxed in our yard, perhaps a little

too comfortable, perhaps enjoying each other's company a little too much, perhaps forgetting that young children

can't be left too long without adults looking after them.

Apparently, a small fight broke out between the boy of the next door and one of my five-year-old grandsons. My

10-year-old grandson immediately jumped to his cousin's defense and pushed the other boy. At this point, the mother

next door was forced to intervene (

调停

).

And the neighbor came over to speak to us. Now when I try to imagine myself: in that position, I imagine all

sorts of negative and aggressive ways to deal with it --- I would have been very angry and complained about the bad

behavior of these visiting children, and definitely sent them home.

Paragraph 1: What she did was quite opposite.

The little boy

A little boy selling magazines for school walked up to a house that people rarely visited. The house was very old

and shabby and the owner hardly ever came out. When he did come out, he would not say hello to his neighbors or

passers-by but simply just glare at them.

The boy knocked on the door and waited, sweating from fear of the old man. The boy’s parents told him to stay

away from the house, and a lot of the other neighborhood children were told the same thing from their parents.

Dust found the boy lingering on and hesitating what to do. As he was ready to walk away, the door slowly

opened. “What do you want?” the old man said impatiently. Th

e little boy was very afraid but he had a quota(

份额

) to

meet for school with selling the magazines. So he got up the courage and said, “Uh, sir, I am selling these magazines

and uh, I was wondering if you would like to buy one from me.”

The old man just sta

red at the boy without a word. The boy could see inside the old man’s house and saw that he

had dog figurines(

小雕像

) on the fireplace mantle. “Do you collect dogs?” The little boy asked. “Yes, I have many

collections in my house. They are my family here and

they are all I have.” The boy then felt sorry for the man, as it

seemed that he was a very lonely soul.

“Well, I do have a magazine here for collectors. It is perfect for you. I also have one about dogs since you like

dogs so much.” The old man was ready to close the door on the boy and said, “No, boy. I don’t need any magazines of

any kind, now goodbye.”

The little boy was sad that he was not going to make his quota with the sale. He was also sad for the old man

being so alone in the house that he owned. The boy went home and then had an idea. He had a little dog figurine that

he got some years ago from an aunt. The figurine did not mean nearly as much to him since he had a real live dog and

a large family.

Para 1:

The little boy headed back down to the old

man’s house.
