—
for example, the average
among
students
is
about
6
per
person.
In
all
the
cases
of
friendly
relationships,
two
people
like
one
another and enjoy being
together, but beyond that, the degree of intimacy
between them and the
reasons for their
shared interest vary enormously. As we get to know
people we take into account
things like
age, race, economic condition, social position,
and intelligence. Although these factors
are
not
of
prime
importance,
it
is
more
difficult
to
get
on
with
people
when
there
is
a
marked
difference in age and background.
Some friendly relationships can be kept
on argument and discussion, but it is usual for
close
friends to have similar ideas and
beliefs, to have attitudes and interests in common
—
they often
talk
about
“being
on
the same wavelength”.
It
generally
takes
time
to reach
this
point.
And
the
more intimately involved
people become, the more they rely on one another.
People want
to do
friends
favors and hate to break a promise. Equally,
friends have to learn to put up with annoying
habits and to tolerate differences of
opinion.
In contrast with
marriage,
there
are
no
friendship
ceremonies to strengthen
the
association
between two
people. But the supporting and understanding of
each other that results from shared
experiences and emotions does seem to
create a powerful bond, which can overcome
differences
in background, and break
down barriers of age, class or race.
1). What does the passage say about
making friends?
A) People usually have
fewer friends than they think.
B)
People do not have to like each other to become
friends.
C) People become friends when
they get on well with each other.
D)
People consider age and background unimportant in
making friends.
2). Which of the
following statements is true according to
Paragraph 2?
A) Tolerance is vital to
friendship.
B) Friends are usually
interdependent.
C) Friends do not rely
financially on each other.
D) Annoying
habits are worse than promise breaking.
3). What does the passage imply about
marriage?
A) There is no friendship
involved in it.
B) There is usually a
special occasion for it.
C) It requires
shared experiences and emotions.
D) It
is a much closer relationship than friendship.
4). Which of the following contributes
to friendship the most?
A) Similarities
in class and race.
B) Similarities in
age and background.
C) Similarities in
habits and beliefs.
D) Similarities in
opinion and feelings.
5). Which of the
following is the best title for the passage?
A) Friends and Friendship
B)
Marriage and Friendship
C) Benefits
from Friends
D) The Art of Making
Friends
Passage 2
Dogs are
social animals and without proper training, they
will behave like wild animals. They
will spoil your house, destroy your
belongings, bark excessively, fight other dogs and
even bite
you. Nearly all behavior
problems are perfectly normal dog activities that
occur at the wrong time
or place or are
directed at the wrong thing. The key to preventing
or treating behavior problems is
learning
to
teach
the
dog
to
redirect
its
normal
behavior
to
outlets
that
are
acceptable
in
the
domestic setting.
One of the best things you
can do for your dog and yourself is to obedience
train (
驯服
) it.
Obedience
training
doesn't
solve
all
behavior
problems,
but
it
is
the
foundation for
solving
just
about
any
problem.
Training
opens
up
a
line
of
communication
between
you
and
your
dog.
Effective communication
is necessary to instruct your dog about what you
want it to do.
Training
is
also
an
easy way
to
establish
the
social
rank
order.
When
your
dog
obeys
a
simple
request of
“
come here,
sit,
”
it is
showing obedience and respect for you. It is not
necessary to
establish yourself as top
dog or leader
of the dog pack
(
群
) by using extreme
measures. Y
ou can
teach your
dog its subordinate (
从属的
)
role by teaching it to show submission to you.
Most dogs
love performing tricks for
you to pleasantly accept that you are in charge.
Training should be fun and
rewarding for you and your dog. It can enrich your
relationship
and
make
living
together
more
enjoyable.
A
well-trained
dog
is
more
confident
and
can
more
safely be allowed a
greater amount of freedom than an untrained
animal.
1. Behavior
problems of dogs are believed to _____.
A) be just part of their nature
B) worsen in modern society
C) occur when they go wild
D) present a threat to the community
2. The primary purpose of obedience
training is to _____.
A) teach the dog
to perform clever tricks
B) make the
dog aware to its owner's authority
C)
provide the dog with outlets for its wild
behavior
D) enable the dog
to regain its normal behavior
3.
Effective communication between a dog and its
owner is _____.
A) essential to solving
the dog's behavior problems
B) the
foundation for dogs to perform tasks
C)
a good way to teach the dog new tricks
D) an extreme measure in obedience
training
4. Why do pet dogs love
performing tricks for their masters?
A)
To avoid being punished.
B) To show
their affection for their masters.
C)
To win leadership of the dog pack.
D)
To show their willingness to obey.
5.
When a dog has received effective obedience
training, its owner _____.
A) can give
the dog more rewards
B) will enjoy a
better family life
C) can give the dog
more freedom.
D) will have more
confidence in himself
Passage 3
On
May
29,
1973, Thomas
Bradley,
a
black
man, was
elected
mayor
of
Los
Angeles.
Los
Angeles
is
the
third
largest
city
in
the
United
States, with
a
population
of
three
million.
About
sixteen percent of the
city
’
s population are black.
News of this election appeared on the
front pages of newspapers everywhere in the United
States. Here is how one major newspaper
reported the event: Los Angeles Elects Bradley
Mayor,
Defeating
Y
orty
—
Black Win
56% of V
otes.
Bradley called his victory
“
the fulfillment of a
dream.
”
During
his childhood and youth,
people had
kept telling him,
“
Y
ou
can
’
t do this, you
can
’
t go there, because
you
’
re a
Negro.
”
Nevertheless he had won a decisive
victory over a man who had been the
city
’
s mayor for three
times. Bradley had won 56.3 percent of
the votes; Y
orty had won 43. 7 percent.
Los Angeles voters had many
opportunities to judge Thomas Bradley and to form
an opinion
of
him.
The
son
of
a
poor
farmer
from
Texas,
he
joined
the
Los
Angeles
police
force
in
1940.
During
his
twenty-one
years
on
the
police
force
he
earned
a
law
degree
by
attending
school
at
night.
He was elected to the city council ten years ago.
At the time of Los Angeles election three
other American cities already had black
mayors, but none of those cities had as large a
population
as Los Angeles. Besides, the
percentage of blacks in those other cities was
much larger. Cleveland,
Ohio, was
thirty-six percent black when Carl Stokes was
elected mayor of Cleveland in 1967. In
the same year Richard Hatcher was
elected mayor of Gary
, Indiana, which
was fifty-five percent
black. In
Newark, New Jersey
, sixty percent of
the population were black when Kenneth Glibson
was elected in 1970. Thus the election
of a black mayor in those cities was not very
surprising.
In Los Angeles thousands of
white citizens voted for Thomas Bradley because
they believe
he would be a better mayor
than the white candidate. Bradley had spent forty-
eight of his fifty-five
years in Los
Angeles. Four years ago Bradley lost the mayoral
election to Y
orty. This time Bradley
won.

him
C
、
he had
spent forty-eight of his fifty-five years in the
city

、
he was
considered the best candidate in the history of
the city
2.
Bradley
’
s victory in the
mayoral election attracted nationwide attention
because _____.
A
、
Los Angeles was
a major city in the U. S. with a relatively small
black population
B
、
Los Angeles was
the place where most of the major U. S. newspapers
were based
C

56%
of black voters and 44% of white voters in Los
Angeles had voted for him
D
、
it had
fulfilled the dream of the black people throughout
the United States
3. Which of the
following cities had the largest percentage of
black population
?
A
、
Los Angeles.
B
、
Cleveland.

4. We may infer from the forth
paragraph that Los Angeles voters _____.
A
、
believed that
Thomas Bradley would give them many opportunities
to judge him
B
、
had been given
many opportunities so they have a high opinion of
Thomas Bradley
C
、
had known
Thomas Bradley well for his long years of public
service in the city
D
、
had had many
opportunities to elect Thomas Bradley mayor of the
city
5. Why did the white voters choose
Bradley over a white candidate?
A
、
Because he had
proved to be a good policeman.
B
、
Because they
expected him to do a better job.
C
、
Because he held
a law degree from a good university.
D
、
Because they
simply wanted to give him a chance.
Passage 4
In many countries
there is a fixed charge for personal
services. A
certain
percentage may be
added to the bill at
a hotel or restaurant
“
for
the service
”
. In other
places the customer may be
expected to
give a tip, or a small amount of money, as a sign
of appreciation whenever services are
performed. In the United States there
is no consistent practice with regard to tipping.
The practice
is more common in a large
city than in a small town. A
Native
American may often be in doubt
about when and how much to tip when he
is in a city that is strange to him. In general,
however, a
tip is expected by the
porter who carries you baggage, by taxi drivers
(except, perhaps, in small
towns), and
by those who serve you in hotels and restaurants.
When you pick up your incoming luggage
at an airport, you may tip the man who takes it to
the taxi or airport bus. He usually
expects 35 cents a bag for his service. In some
cities the taxi that
takes you to your
hotel may have one meter that shows the cost of
the trip and another that shows
a fixed
charge, usually about 20 cents, for
“
p>
extra
”
. In some
cities the taxi driver may expect a tip
in addition to the
“
< br>extra
”
, especially if he
carries your suitcase. If no
“
extra
”
is
charged, a tip
is usually given. Hotels
usually do not have a service charge, though there
are places where one is
added.
It
is customary,
however,
to
give
something
to
the
porter who carries
your
suitcases
and
shows you to
your room. If in doubt, 25 cents for each bag he
carries is satisfactory
. In a
restaurant
you generally leave about 15
percent of the bill in small change on the table
as a tip for the person
who has served
you. A
service charge is generally not
included except in some of the larger, more
expensive places. If the order is
small
—
a cup of coffee at a
lunch counter, or something of the
sort
—
a tip is not usually
expected.
1. According to the passage,
a tip is _______ for personal services.
A
、
a sign of
appreciation
B
、
a
fixed charge
C
、
the bill at a
hotel or restaurant
D
、
an extra
2. A
Native American
_______.
A
、
knows
a lot about tipping
B
、
does not often
tip a stranger
C
、
usually lives
in a small town
D
、
often works as
a porter
3. The word
“
one
”
in Line 6, Paragraph 2, refers to
_______.
A
、
service charge
B
、
extra
C
、
hotel
D
、
room service
4. If a porter carries three pieces of
baggage for you, you are expected to give him
_______ as a
tip.
A
、
50 cents
B
、
1 dollar
C
、
1.5 dollars
D
、
5 dollars
5. We can learn from the passage
that_______.
A
、
all American
taxi drivers are expected to be tipped
B
、
people in small
towns know more about tipping
C
、
one has to tip
a waiter no matter how small the order is
D
、
people
sometimes do not tip when they are not satisfied
Passage 5
Today television
is one of the most popular forms of entertainment
in the home. Some people
in places
where television reception is good may think that
television has taken the place of radio.
Television,
however,
is
actually
a
kind
of
radio.
It
uses
special
equipment
for
sending
and
receiving the picture. The television
sound system uses the same type of equipment that
is used in
other forms of radio.
Exchanging messages with ships at sea
was one of the first uses of radio. Modern radio
is still
used for
this
purpose
and
for
communication
across
oceans.
On
land
radio
provides
a means
of
instant communication
even with moving vehicles such as taxicabs or
service trucks.
Police forces use two-
way radio to get information to and from officers
in squad cars
(
警备
车
)
and
on
motorcycles.
Small
portable
sets
make
it
possible
to
communicate
with
a
central
exchange while walking or riding in a
city or over a rural area. Observers in airplanes
can report
traffic accidents, and
traffic jams by radio to police officers on the
ground.
Radiotelephones are used in
many places. Connection with the regular telephone
service can
be provided for boats,
trains and cars. Isolated places in deserts,
forests, and mountainous regions
are
linked
by
radiotelephone
in
many
parts
of
the
world.
Thus
by
means
of radio
people
can
communicate with others wherever
service is provided.
1. According to
the passage, television _____.
A
、
has taken the
place of radio
B
、
is no longer
popular in the home
C
、
can be regarded
as a kind of radio
D
、
has nothing in
common with radio
2. In paragraph two,
“
this
purpose
”
refers
to _____.
A
、
exchanging
messages with ships at sea
B
、
communicating
across oceans
C
、
sending and
receiving the picture
D
、
instant
communication with moving vehicle
3.
According to the passage, radio is used in the
following ways EXCEPT _____.
A
、
at sea
B
、
on land
C
、
in the air
D
、
underground
4. The word
“
Isol
ated
”
in the last
paragraph means _____.
A
、
sandy and
mountainous
B
、
clean and not
polluted
C
、
without any
living things
D
、
separated or
distant
5. The best title for the
passage is _____.
A
、
Television and
Radio
B
、
Radio and
Its Uses
C
、
Radio
and Radiotelephones
D
、
Modern
Communication
Passage 6
Surprise!
Y

in
college!
“I
never
knew
living
with
a
roommate
was so
hard.”
“I
can?t
believe the amount of reading
required for just one class.” “I didn?t know what
the Freshman 20
was until I gained 20
pounds.” No matter how hard or how long you
plan for college, it?s filled
with surprises, from dorm conflicts and
academic rigors
(严酷;艰苦)
to the relationship maze
and
campus
logistics
(后勤)
.
Students

surprises
they

expect when
entering
the
ivy-
covered walls this fall.
Dorm Life
Adjusting to a roommate?s
music
preferences, sleeping times and
tastes in dorm was a surprise
to Emily
Carlson,
a communication major. “I was
an only child used to my own room, so it was a
challenge
adjusting
to
roommates.”
“At
first
it
felt
like
being
at
summer camp,”
recalls
Kristy
Lindquist,
a
cross-
cultural
ministry
major.
“Eventually
one
becomes
accustomed
to
it,
after
growing
from
both
good
and
bad
experiences.”
At
the
beginning
of
her
freshman
year,
Amber
White, a music major, thought she?d get
close to one roommate in particular, but it wasn?t
the case.
“I
thought
I?d
get
along
better with
my
roommates,
but
overall
the
friends
I
made
in
the
first
weeks
were
not
the
friends
I
actually
kept.”
The
housekeeping
aspects
of
the
sexes
surprised
senior Ben
Hemmila,
president of the Northwestern Student Association.
“Guys? dorms smell bad
no matter what
happens! Girls? dorms are generally messier than
guys?, but smell better.”
Academics
Need

for
a
mid-term
exam
or
finish
a

paper?
Get ready
to
burn
the
midnight
oil
― and the early
-
morning oil!
“Late in college means 3
-4 a.m. not
10-
11 p.m.” says Hemmila.
Carlson agrees. “With other
obligations, like work and social things, studying
until 3 a.m. is not
unusual.”
Y
et she was surprised at her st

)
. “I?ve stayed up 48, even 72
hours studying ― thanks to coffee and
willpower. Staying up isn?t that hard. The
difficult part is
keeping everything in
your brain.” Another common surprise is the vast
amount of reading college
requires:
50-60
pages a night ― per class!
Hemmila was surprised he didn?t get a detention
(延
迟;留置;拘留)
when he skipped a class. But he still
paid the tuition for that skipped class.
Students
are
surprised
to
realize
their
education
needs
to
include
personal
discipline
and
time
management.
“There
is
never
enough
time,”
realizes
Katie
Dean,
a
business
major.
“I can?t
be
involved in everything like in high
school, and even a part-
time job is
hard with a full load.” Paul
Bradley,
dean
of
residence
life
at
Northwestern
College,
says
freshmen
usually
find
they
have
more homework than
expected and finals are more difficult. “They?re
surprised because they get
fewer
directives from professors on how to study and
what to study
.”
As for that
Freshman 20, Murphy hears from many students who
were amazed how quickly
they gained
weight. “It?s the reality of inactivity ― sitting
in class, studying, then eating pizza.”
