Birth:
Herme’s
grandfather
was
the
gigantic
Titan,
Atlas.
Atlas
was
the
Titan who was punished and sentenced by Zeus, the king of the gods, to
be the one who would hold up the sky from falling to the earth. So with his
massive shoulders, Atlas is forever holding up the sky, like a pillar, “as if
the
whole
weight
of
the
world
was
on
his
shoulders”
(American
idiom)
(Compare
this
myth
to
the
Chinese
myth
of
Goddess
Nuwa
who
temporarily placed a stone in sky, until she used the four legs of a tortoise
to be the pillars that held up the sky).
Atlas is where the name for the Atlantic Ocean comes from and it is also
where we get the name for the book called an Atlas (a book of maps).

Atlas had many daughters, one of these was the goddess: Maia, she was a
mountain goddess. One day Zeus saw Maia on her mountain and came to
her with lust in his eyes. Soon afterwards she gave birth to a boy, Hermes.
During the first night after his birth, baby Hermes became restless in his
crib and wanted to go exploring. So he figured out way to escape from his
crib and sneak out of the mountain cave without his mother, the goddess,
noticing
he
was
missing.
Now
free
to
roam
the
world,
the
clever-youth
Hermes went out and searched for food. It wasn’t long before he found the
cattle of sheep and oxen that belonged to his step-brother, Apollo, god of
the sun. Truly, these oxen were the juiciest and finest Oxen in all the world.
So the cunning-boy decided to steal
his brother’s prized cattle.

It
was
night,
so
his
brother,
the
sun
god,
was
not
looking.
Under
the
disguise of night, Hermes lead the sheep and cattle, quietly, back into his
cave to hide them. Later, Apollo, being the god of prophecies and telling
the future, had a vision that his cattle had been stolen during the night. So
with the coming of bright-drawn, Apollo noticed that his vision had come

true, his cattle had gone missing! But who took them? The intelligent god
came down to earth to see if the cows had left any tracks from their hooves.
But when he looked for tracks to follow, Apollo, found none! It was almost
as
if
the
Oxen
had
just
vanished
out
of
thin
air.
This
is
impossible,
he
thought, who has the power to make this many cattle disappear at once?
Then he noticed something. The surrounding trees were missing a lot of
leaves and twigs. The Bright-Apollo figured out how the thief could make
his cattle go missing without leaving any tracks. The thief must have took
the leaves off the trees and attached them to the hooves of the cattle, so
that they wouldn’t leave any tracks. So Apollo discovered “how” the cattle
had gone missing, but he still had no clue “who” stole the cattle and “where”
were they now?

Apollo, thought, whoever took all these cattle must be one good thief. The
best thief in the world. Then he remembered that early in the morning the
day
before,
a
new
son
Zeus
had
been
born,
Hermes.
Apollo
had
the
suspicion that perhaps Hermes’ new powers made him the god of Thieves
and Trickery. Angry, Apollo sailed across the
sky in his fiery chariot, the
sun. He found the cave where Hermes was born. Apollo burst inside the
cave,
finding
the
baby,
Hermes,
asleep
in
his
crib.
Apollo
flashed
in
agitation,
the
bright
light
woke
the
babe.
In
confusion,
the
child
Hermes
began
to
ask
who
are
you?
But
before
he
could
finish
his
sentence,
Heated-
Apollo
accused
the
youth,
demanding,
“Where
are
they?
Where
have you hidden them, boy?”

“Hidden, what? Oh great god,” blinked the child in innocence
.
“Don’t play games with me. No lies can get passed my powerful
me back what is mine! Where have you hidden my cattle?! Speak!”

“I swear to you, I have no idea what you are talking about?”

“Enough
of
your
tricks,”
Said
angry
Apollo.
He
dashed
tow
ards
the
boy,
grabbed him by the collar, and immediately drove him up to their father’s
palace on Mount Olympus.

There,
Apollo
accused
his
young
step-brother,
Hermes,
before
their
judicious- Father,
Zeus,
who
sat
on
his
majestic
throne.
But
when
Zeus
heard that a mere one-day-old child had managed to trick his bright and
intelligent
son,
Apollo,
he
just
sat
there
and
laughed.
Apollo
asked
his
father to stop laughing and pleaded with him to take this matter seriously.
Finally, Authoritative-Zeus asked Hermes if he had taken the cattle or not.
Hermes still pleaded innocence of the crime and that he had been wrongly
accused by his older brother. But Zeus chided his newborn son, pointing
out
that
he
was
the
chief
of
all
gods,
and
therefore
sees
and
knows
everything that happens on earth. And that he knew full well that this son
was guilty. Therefore, he said that Hermes had until noon that day to return
the cattle, or that he, as their father, would intervene.

Noon was only one hour away, so Hermes went back inside his cave and
tried
to
think
of
a
way
on
how
he
could
still
win,
and
keep
the
cattle.
Meanwhile,
Apollo
stood
outside
the
cave
waiting
in
anger.
Apollo
didn’t
understand why didn’t Hermes just give him the cattle right away. So each
minute he had to wait, he became hotter and hotter with agitation. A half
hour
passed
and
still
know
sign
of
the
catlle.
Then
a
tortise
was
seen
walking into the cave. When Hermes saw the turtle crawl into the cave, a
clever idea flashed into his mind. He killed the tortise and then killed one fo
the
Bulls.
He
removed
the
shell
from
the
turtle.
Then
he
took
out
the
intestines of the ox and turned them into silk-like strings. He then tied the
strings to the shell of the turtle. Outside the cave, Apollo still grew houtter
and hotter every minute, waiting for noon to arrive. But in his heated anger,
the enraged- Apollo began to hear something he had never heard before. It
was so soft sounding. At first, he wanted to just think about how angry he
was at the youth, but his thoughts soon began to become distracted, and
he wanted to keep listening to this new strange sound. It was so gentle,
and
harmonious,
what
was
this
sound,
he
thought?
The
rythm
of
the
strange sound began to cool his anger and he began to only think about
this
strange
noise.
He
asked
himself,
where
is
this
sound
coming
from?
Why it’ is coming from within the cave, he noticed. Apollo ventured into the
cave, curious to learn where the sound’s origin was coming from. When he
was inside, he saw that it was his baby brother, Hermes, that was making
the
noise.
Somehow
he
was
getting
the
turtles
shell
to
make
a
beutiful
noise
whenever
he
strummed
his
hands
acrossed
it.
Apollo
was
now
enchanted at watching the little hands of the god string across the surface,
he was mesmerized by his fluid motion, and the beautiful sound that was
being produced that was echoing off the cave walls. Completely dispelled
of all anger,
Apollo now had a new desire.

Apollo, asked of his brother, “Baby
-brother, what is it that you are playing
w
ith?”

“Oh, this thing,” Hermes looked up, acting as if he wasn’t aware that Apollo
was standing there, “this is just one of my inventions.”

“Please, tell me, what do you call this invention of yours? It sounds like the
sweet voice of Muses Nine.”

“I’m
call
ing
it,
Music.
And
this
is
the
first
musical
instrument.
The
first
in
many instruments I intend to also invent.”

“Please, precious, brother, please let me have this musical instrument.”

“Oh, gladly, brother. But there is just one problem. I get very lonely
in this
cave, and this music is the only thing that keeps me company. If you were
to remove it, I would be so lonely.”

A
bright
idea
came
to
Apollo,
“I
know!
We’ll
trade.
If
you
give
me
your
musical instrument, I will let you keep my valuable cattle. They can be your
