The Origin of Species
Biologists Define a Species
Modern biology generally define a species as group of actuall
y or potentially interbreeding populationsthat is reproductivel
y isolated from the such groups. Members of a species can in
terbreed with each other, but they cannot breed with organis
ms belonging to another species. One advantage of the stan
dard ofreproductive isolation is that it is very precise. Notice,
however, that it can only be applied to organismsthat reprod
uce sexually. Asexual reproducers, including most prokaryote
s, many plants, and someanimals, must be classified into spec
ies on the basis of physical (biochemical or morphological) tr
aits.

Genetic Bases of speciation
The extent of differences between populations that are diverg
ing into separate species or betweenspecies that have already
diverged is represented by a statistic called genetic identity-t

members of groups being compared. In general, biologists be
lieve that the genetic events leading to speciation take place
gradually. Once a new specieshas arisen, it tends to diverge
genetically from related species at a more rapid pace. In som
