Passage 1

A poor young artist
came to the gate of the subway station. He put his
hat on the ground and took out a large piece
of paper and laid it on the
ground. Then he
adjusted the violin and began playing.
Before long, the young violinist was
surrounded with people, who were all
attracted
by the words on that paper. It said, “Last night,
a gentleman
named George Sang put an
important thing into my hat by mistake. Please
come to claim it soon.”

After about
half an hour, a middle-aged man ran there in a
hurry and rushed
through the crowd to the
violinist and grabbed his shoulders and said,
“Yes, it’s you. You did come here. I knew that
you’re an honest man
and would certainly come
here.”

The story turned out to be this
:George Sang bought a lottery ticket a
few
days ago. The awards opened yesterday and he won a
prize of $$500,000.
So he felt very happy and
he took out 50 dollars for the wonderful music
played by the young man. However the lottery
ticket was also thrown in.

Later someone
asked the violinist: “At that time you needed to
pay the
tuition fee and had to play the violin
every day to make the money. Then
why didn’t
you take the lottery ticket for yourself?”
The violinist said, “Although I don’t have
much money, I live happily;
but if I lose
honesty I won’t be happy forever.”

Through
our lives, we can gain a lot and lose so much. But
being honest
should always be with us. If we
bear ourselves in a deceptive and dishonest
way, we may succeed temporarily. However, from
the long-term view, we will
be a loser. Such
people are just like the water on the mountain. It
stands

loses the chance of going up.

Passage 2

During the meal, you'd
better be careful not to leave a spoon in a soup
bowl or coffee cup or any other dish. The
coffee spoon ought to be on the
saucer, the
soup spoon ought to be on the plate under the
bowl. When you
are having soup, make the least
noises and use the side of your spoon inside
out this way, not the tip. And you mustn't
pick up your soup bowls so as
to drink away
the last drops of your soup from the bottom of the
bowl.

Very often there is only one main
course and salad, followed by your sweet.
If
you find the meal not enough, say
some more of
the chicken or steak or whatever you have just
had. The hostess
will be very glad that you
appreciate her cooking and will give you an
extra portion. But if you observe the Chinese
way of being polite and say
hostess offers you
more, you will most probably
starve later,
because Americans will never press food on you.
Yet it is
not polite to keep silent and not to
talk with the person next to you.
It would be
considered good manners if you handle your
silverware with
care so that they don't make
any noise. When coffee comes, drink it from
your cup. The coffee spoon should rest on the
saucer while you are drinking.
And smoking, of
course, is rarely seen at a dinner table. Well,
when the
meal is finished, the guests
put their napkins on the table and stand up,
the men again helping the ladies with their
chairs.

After the dinner, the guests
usually stay for an hour or two, and then
they
would say,
hostess would of course urge
everyone to stay longer.
Won't you have
another coffee? The guests, for instance, would
say,
love to, but I have to be up early
tomorrow morning. Thank you for a most
enjoyable evening. Good night.

And if
you stay overnight or over the weekend, it will be
courteous to
send a thank-you note to the host
or hostess the following day, very often
with
a small gift such as a box of chocolate or some
flowers as a token
of appreciation of their
hospitality.

1. Which of the following
would be the best title of the passage? C
A. How to Prepare for a Meal.

Press Food on Your Guest.

Manners in the U. S. A.

__B____.

A. to make the hostess happy you
should ask for more food even if you are
full

B. you should keep silent at a
dinner table in order to be polite

C. if
you want to be friendly with the person next to
you, you should press
food on him

D.
talking is necessary at a dinner table

3.
At a dinner table, you do all of the following
except ___B___.

A. making the least noise
possible

B. picking up your soup bowl to
drink away the last drop

C. handling your
silverware with care

D. drinking the
coffee from your cup

A. different nations have

B. Chinese customs are
quite similar to American ones

C. both
Chinese and Americans have soup before the main
course

D. if you are polite, the hostess

Passage 3
Community service is an important component of
education here at our
university. We encourage
all students to volunteer for at least one
community activity before they graduate. A new
community program called
One- On- One helps
elementary students who’ve fallen behind. Your
education majors might be especially
interested in it because it offers
the
opportunity to do some teaching, that is, tutoring
in math and English.

     You’d have to
volunteer two hours a week for one semester. You
can choose to help a child with math, English,
or both. Half-hour lessons
are fine, so you
could do a half hour of each subject two days a
week.

Professor Dodge will act as a
mentor to the tutors — he’ll be available
to
help you with lesson plans or to offer suggestions
for activities. He
has office hours every
Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. You can sign up
for the program with him and begin the
tutoring next week.

I’m sure you’ll
enjoy this community service … and you’ll gain
valuable experience at the same time. It looks
good on your resume, too,
showing that you’ve
had experience with children and that you care
about
your community. If you’d like to sign
up, or if you have any questions,
stop by
Professor Dodge’s office this week.

What is the purpose of the talk? B

A. To
explain a new requirement for graduation.

program

C. To discuss the problems of
elementary school students.

D. To
recruit elementary school teachers for a special
program.

2. What is the purpose of the
program that the speaker describes? C
A. To find jobs for graduating students.
B. To help education majors prepare for final
exams.

C. To offer tutorials to
elementary school students.

D. To provide
funding for a community service project.
3. What does Professor Dodge do? A
A. He advises students to participate in
certain program.

B. He teaches part-time
in an elementary school.

C. He observes
elementary school students in the classroom.
D. He helps students prepare their resumes.

4. What should students who are
interested in the tutorials do? D

A.
Contact the elementary school.

B. Sign up
for a special class.

C. Submit a resume
to the dean.

Students.

C. Residents D.
Graduated students

Passage 4
Normally a student must attend a certain
number of courses in order to
graduate, and
each course which he attends gives him a credit
which he
may count towards a degree. In many
American universities the total work
for a
degree consists of thirty-six courses each lasting
for one semester.
A typical course consists of
three classes per week for fifteen weeks;
while attending a university a student will
probably attend four or five
courses
during each semester. Normally a student would
expect to take four
years attending two
semesters each year. It is possible to spread the
period of work for the degree over a longer
period. It is also possible
for a student to
move between one university and another during his
degree
course, though this is not in fact done
as a regular practice.

For every course
that he follows a student is given a grade, which
is
recorded, and the record is available for
the student to show to
prospective employers.
All this imposes a constant pressure and strain
of work, but in spite of this some students
still find time for great
activity in student
affairs. Elections to positions in student
organizations arouse much enthusiasm. The
student organizations are
effective in
ensuring that the students observe university
regulations.
Any student who is thought to
have broken the rules, for example, by
cheating has to appear before a student court.
With the enormous numbers
of students, the
operation of the system does involve a certain
amount
of activity. A student who has held one
of these positions of authority
is much
respected and it will be of benefit to him later
in his career.

1. Normally an American
university student would attend ____A____ courses
for a degree.

A. 36 B.
20 C.
12
D. 15

2. According to the first paragraph
an American student is allowed
___D______.
A. to live in a different university
B. to get two degrees from two different
universities

C. to live at home and drive
to classes

D. to take a particular course
in a different university

3. American
university students are usually under pressure of
work because
______A___.

A. their
academic performance will affect their future
career

B. they are heavily involved in
student affairs

C. they have to observe
university discipline

D. they want
to run for positions of authority

4. Some
students are enthusiastic for positions in student
organizations
probably because ____C____.
A. they hate the constant pressure and strain
of their study

B. they will then be able
to stay longer in the university

C. such
positions may help them get better jobs

D.
such positions are usually well paid

5.
The student organizations seem to be effective in
_____B____.

A. dealing with the academic
affairs of the university

B. ensuring that
the students observe university regulations
C .evaluating students’ performance by
bringing them before a court

Passage 6

The word “day” has two
meanings. When we talk about the number of days
in a year,we are using “day”to mean 24 hours.
But when we talk about
day and night,we are
using “day” to mean the time between sunrise and
sunset. Since the earth looks like a ball, the
sun can shine on only half
of it at a time.
Always one half of the earth is having day and the
other
half night. A place is moved from day
into night and from night into day
over and
over by the spinning (旋转) of the earth. At the
equator (赤
道) day and night are sometimes the
same length. They are each twelve hours
long.
The sun rises at 6 o'clock in the morning and sets
at 6 o'clock in
the evening. For six months
the North Pole is tilted (倾斜) toward the
sun.
In those months the Northern Hemisphere (半球) gets
more hours of
sunlight than the Southern
Hemisphere. Days are longer than nights. South
of the equator nights are longer than days.
For the other six months the
North Pole is
tilted away from the sun. Then the Southern
Hemisphere gets
more sunlight. Days are longer
than nights. North of the equator nights
are
longer than days. Winter is the season of long
nights. Summer is the
season of long days.
the Western Hemisphere is having day,the
Eastern Hemisphere is
having night. A

Passage 7

I believe honesty is
one of the greatest gifts there is. I know they
call
it a lot of fancy names these days, like
integrity and forthrightness.
But it doesn't
make any difference what they call it; it's still
what makes
a man a good citizen. This is my
code, and I try to live by.

 I've been in
the taxicab business for thirty-five years, and I
know there
is a lot about it that is not so
good. Taxicab drivers have to be rough
and
tumble fellows to be able to take it in New York.
You've got to be
tough to fight the New York
traffic eight hours a day these days. Because
taxi drivers are tough, people get the wrong
impression that they are bad.
Taxi drivers are
just like other people. Most of them will shake
down as
honest fellows. You read in the papers
almost every week where a taxi
driver turns in
money or jewels or bonds, stuff like that, people
leave
in their cabs If they weren't honest,
you wouldn't be reading those stories
in the
papers.

I was born and raised in Ireland
and lived there until I was nineteen years
old. I came to this country in 1913 where I
held several jobs to earn a
few dollars before
enlisting in World War I. After being discharged,
I
bought my own cab and have owned one ever
since. It hasn't been too easy
at times, but
my wife takes care of our money and we have a good
bit put
away for a rainy day.

In all
my years of driving a taxicab, I have never had
any trouble with
the public, not even with
drunks. Even if they get a little headstrong
once in a while, I just agree with them and
then they behave themselves.

People ask
me about tips. I’d say, most Americans are pretty
generous.
I always try to be nice to everyone,
whether they tip or not.

1. I am a new
taxicab driver in New York. B

A. T
B. F

2. I did some jobs to make a
living before I became a taxicab driver A
A. T B. F

3. I am always being nice
to everyone. A

Passage 8

In the UK, in
business situations, when you meet someone for the
first
time you shake hands and say,
question, and the reply to it is another
greeting such as do you do?
or or very pleased
to meet youor, if you have met the person
sometime before,

You don't shake
hands every time you meet someone, you just greet
them.
If you are invited to someone's house
for dinner, it is usual to take a
present -
some chocolates or flowers or, if you know them
quite well, a
bottle of wine. If you do not
know the host well, don't be the last person
to leave. Telephone the next day to thank the
host for the meal. English
people don't like
to talk about personal things, and tend to avoid
religion,
politics and money.

Good
topics for small talk are the weather, holidays,
weekend activities,
gardens and architecture,
especially houses and homes. When you go to a
pub or bar, it's usual to take turns to buy a
drink for everyone in your
group and pay for
the drinks when you get them from the bar and
before
you drink them.

Passage 9

No one is glad to hear that
his body has to be cut open by a surgeon and
part of it taken out. Today, however, we
needn’t worry about feeling pain
during the
operation. The sick person falls into a kind of
sleep, and when
he awakes, the operation is
finished. But these happy conditions are
fairly new. It is not many years since a man
who had to have operation
felt all its
pain.

Long ago, operation had usually to
be done while the sick man could feel
everything. Soon after 1770, Josept Priestley
discovered a gas which is
now called ‘laughing
gas’. Laughing gas became known in America. Young
men and women went to parties to try it. Most
of them spent their time
laughing, but one man
at a party, Horace Wells, noticed that people
didn’t
seem to feel pain when they were using
this gas. He decided to make an
experiment on
himself. He asked a friend to help him.
Wells took some of the gas, and his friend
pulled out one of Wells’ teeth.
Wells felt no
pain at all. As he didn’t know enough about
laughing gas,
he gave a man less gas than he
should have. The man cried out with pain
when
his tooth was being pulled out.

Wells
tried again, but this time he gave too much of the
gas, and the man
died. Wells never forgot this
terrible event.

Passage 10

Are you satisfied

of
increment each year? If your answer is
then, you need to do something
to make changes
by enhancing your current career or advance to a
new career
that pays better and with better
employee benefits.

Generally, people
with more working experience in related field get
better
salary. People who are holding master's
degree get higher salary than
those who are
holding bachelor's degree. These facts may not be
true all
the time, but in general, they are.
Job market is very competitive, so
you need to
have good skills with sufficient working
experience and a good
knowledge to be
successful in your position and in your career.

If you quit your job and go back to
school for the degree, you will lose
a few
years of working experience and your current
income. In addition,
if you have family
commitment and other financial reasons that stop
you
from quitting your job, then, earning your
degree online is the best
option.

If
you are looking for a job opportunity in senior
management position,
you need to have a master
and doctorate degree in business administration
or other business related degree in order to
compete with other candidates.
Many
traditional universities and online colleges are
offering business
related online degree
programs. You definitely can find a degree program
that can help you to meet your career
goal.

View on Online Learning
1.越来越多的学校开始提供在线学习课程

3.我的观点
My View on Online Learning
With the rapid development of network, more
and more schools begin to
provide online
learning courses. On the one hand, online learning
gives
more convenience to on-the-job learners,
because they can freely
arrange the time and
place of class. On the other hand, because online
learning can not achieve face-to-face
communication, teachers can not
get feedback
in time to adjust the teaching progress. As far as
I'm
concerned, online learning always has more
advantages than
disadvantages, but we need to
be fully involved in learning.
