Pearl Carson was shaken awake at
3: 30 am by a forceful pull. King, the family dog,
was
trying to pull her out of bed. Then she
smelled smoke and heard the sound of fire from her
parents’
room. Pearl’s screams awaked her
mother, Fern, and father Howard, who had recently
been in
hospital for lung disease.
Helping Howard to a first—floor window, Fern told
him to climb out,
then ran to her daughter.
Still inside, King appeared at Pearl’s window,
making squeaking sound. When running
toward
Pearl’s bedroom, Fern realized her husband hadn’t
yet escaped. She made her way back
through the
smoke and flames, following King’s sound to where
Howard lay semiconscious on the
floor. Fern
helped him get outside. King came out only after
both were safe.
As day dawned, the Carlsons
saw that King’s paws were badly burned, and his
entire body
was burned, too. His chain collar
had gotten so hot that it burned his throat,
making it impossible
for him to bark normally.

wood in his mouth and
realized that King, who slept outside, had bittern
through a wood door to
warn his family.

American former Vice-
President Gore often tells a true story about a
frog that was put into a
pot of water: The
water was slowly heated until it boiled. But even
though it was able to do so, the
frog did not
jump out of the water.
According to the vice-
president, many people are like that frog. They
close their eyes to the
changes in the
environment. Although we are poisoning ourselves,
many people, like the frog, are
doing nothing
about it.
You and I can choose to be
different. We can choose to hop out of that pot.
We can take a
stand. We can make choices that
will help protect the environment.
C. The
father. D. The mother.
Did you know
that one quart of oil can actually pollute two
million gallons of wateryou're
your family put
its used motor oil in a hazardous(危险品)waste dump,
you can protect two
million gallons of water.
Better yet, your family can recycle your motor oil
so that it could be used
again.
If you
turn off the lights in your house when they are
not needed, you can help prevent acid
rain. As
you probably know, acid rain is caused by air
pollution. A light bulb(灯泡)actually gives
off
gases that cause acid rain
There are other
ways that you can help decrease air pollution. You
can ride a bike or walk
when you are going a
short distance. Use a car only for longer trips.
Did you know that a typical family of four
throws out 200 large rubbish cans of waste each
year? This trash has to go somewhere. But we
are running out of room for it.
Much of the
rubbish that is going to landfills—areas set aside
for waste—can be recycled.
Bottles, paper,
cans, and many metals are recyclable, If you and
your family recycle these
materials, you can
cut your trash in half.
So you see, one
person can make a difference. We do not have to
act like frogs , waiting to be
boiled.
65. What is the writer's purpose in this
speech?
A. To state facts about the
environment. B. To explain frog biology.
C. To warn people to overlook frogs. D. To
persuade people to take care of the environment.
66. What is the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A. All people do not have to be and act the
same. B. People can take a stand.
C. People
can choose to protect the environment D. Changes
are occurring in the environment
67. What does
the underlined word“it”refer to?
A. A typical
family. B. A rubbish can. C. Waste D. A car
68. A particular mention of Gore’s story about
a frog in the speech__________.
A. serves as a
description of the danger the frog’s in
B.
serves as an introduction to the discussion of the
problem we’re facing
C. shows the interest of
the vice president
D. shows how hard it is to
adapt to the environment
C
For a
clearer picture of what the student knows, most
teachers use another kind of
examination in
addition to objective tests. They use“essay”tests,
which require students to write
long answers
to broad, general questions such as the following:
“Mention several ways in which
Benjamin
Franklin has influenced the thinking of people in
his own count and in other parts of the
world.
”
One advantage of the essay test is that
it reduces the element of luck. The student cannot
get a
high score just by making a lucky guess.
Another advantage is that it shows the examiner
more
about the student’S ability to put facts
together into a meaningful whole. It should show
how
deeply he has thought about the subject.
Sometimes, though, essay tests have disadvantages,
too.
Some students are able to write rather
good answers without really knowing much about the
subject, while other students who actually
know the material have trouble expressing their
ideas in
the essay form.
Besides, in an
essay test the student’s score may depend upon the
examiner’s feelings at the
time of reading the
answer. If he is feeling tired or bored, the
student may receive a lower score
than he
should. Another exanliner reading the same answer
might give it a much higher mark.
Because of
this, the objective test gives each student a
fairer chance, and of course it is easier and
quicker to score.
Whether an objective
test or an essay test is used, problems arise.
When some objective
questions are used along
with some essay questions, however, a fairly clear
picture of the student’s
knowledge can usually
be obtained.
69. What may have been discussed
in the paragraphs before this?
A. The
essay test.
B. How teachers test
their students.
D. The objective test. C.
How students write their essays.
70. The
essay test is preferred because .
A. it
shows more about the student’s understanding of
the subject
B. it tests the student’s
knowledge of the material as well as his
expression of ideas
C. it gives each student a
fairer chance
D. its scoring may be influenced
by the examiner’s feelings
71. The underlined
word“this”in Paragraph 3 refers to the fact
.
A. students may receive a lower score in an
essay test
B. another examiner usually
gives the answer a higher mark
C. different
examiners may give the same essay different scores
D. the objective test gives each student a
fairer chance
72. According to the passage,
which of the following about the objective test is
NOT TRUE?
A. It is more objective than the
essay test in terms of scoring.
B. It allows
the student to guess the correct answer without
really knowing the material.
C. It shows the
student’s ability to think about difficult
problems.
D. It is easy and quick to score.

Americans who remember“the good old
days’’are not alone in complaining about the
educational system in this country.
Immigrants(移民)complain, too. Lately a German
friend was
filled with anger when he learned
that the mathematics test given to his son on his
first day as a
college freshman included
multiplication and division. Japanese businessmen
in Los Angeles send
their children to private
schools staffed by teachers imported from Japan to
learn mathematics at
Japanese levels generally
considered at least a year more advanced than the
level here.
But I wonder: If American
education is so poor, why is it that this is still
the country of
innovation(创新)?
When 1 was
12 in Indonesia, I had to memorize the name of all
the world’s major cities. from
Kabul to
Karachi. At the same age, my son, who was brought
up a Californian, thought that
Buenos Aires
was Spanish for good food. However, unlike
children of his age in Asia and Europe,
my son
had studied creative he was only 6, he drew a map
of the route that he
traveled to get to
school, including the streets, the traffic signs
and the houses that he passed
Dissatisfied
American parents forget that in this country their
children are able to experiment
freely with
ideas;without this they will not really be able to
think or to believe in themselves.
Critics of
American education cannot grasp one thing:
freedom. America, I think, is the only
country
that extends even to children the license to
freely speak, write and be creative.
Our
public education certainly is not perfect, but it
is a great deal better than any other. I
think
I have found the answer to my question.
73.
According to the writer of the text, _______.
A. both Americans and immigrants are
dissatisfied with the quality of American
education
B. American education is
worse than education in many other countries
C. Japanese schools in America demand that
their teachers teach mathematics at Japanese
levels
D. his German friend was displeased
because the mathematics test for his son was too
hard
74. We can infer from the text_______.
A. if children cannot experiment freely with
ideas they won’t grow up independent and creative
B. the present American educational system is
not asgood as it used to be
C. Private schools
run by Japanese businessmen are much better than
American public schools
D. Amerieans are more
innovative than other people in the world
75.
In the last paragraph the author says,”I have
found the answer to my question.”What is the
question?
A. Is Japanese education better
than American education?
B. Why do Japanese
businessmen send their children to Japanese-
staffed schools?
C. Why was my son not taught
enough geographic knowledge'?
D. Is American
education really worse than education in other
countries'?
76. What would be the best title
for this text?
A. American education and
education in foreign countries
B.
Improvement needed for American education
C. Freedom to think——characteristic of American
education
D. Education and innovation in
America

“There is no arguing about
taste”-- runs the Latin proverb. But taste did not
just happen. Cultural,
historical, biological
and environmental events have interacted to cause
frogs, for example, to be
viewed as delicious
in southern China but to be regarded with
revulsion(厌恶)in northern China.
Even though
much remains unknown, tastes cannot be dismissed
as inarguable or illogical;an
attempt will be
made here to discover why, as Lucretius put it,
“What is food to one man may be
fierce poison
to others. ”
Among the approximately thirty
million tribal(部落的) people of India, a total of
250
animal species are avoided by one group or
another. Most of these people will not eat meal
from a
tiger or any of various snakes.
Although they say they feel a relationship with
these animals, it is
obvious that both are
highly dangerous and that hunting them
systematically would be foolish.
Monkeys are avoided, probably because
they look like human beings in appearance;in these
tribes, man-eating is viewed as extremely
cruel. A reluctance(勉强)to eat some female animals
has been attributed to respect for the
mother’s role, but it could also be due to a
policy of allowing
the females to reproduce
and provide more young for people. Many tribes
avoid eating any animal
that has died of
unknown causes —— an intelligent attitude in view
of the possibility that the
animal might have
died from a disease that could spread to humans.
Animals that consume
garbage are similarly
avoided, an adaptive step that prevents contact
with parasites(寄生虫), and
that might explain
why members of one tribe eat any of twenty—one
different species of rats, but
not the house
rat.
77. “There is no arguing about taste”,
which means_______ .
A. people don’t like to
talk about food B. one’s taste in food is hard to
explain
C. there is no quarrelling about to
eat D. no arguments about taste have been heard of
before
78. It can be concluded from the first
paragraph that .
A. the author is
against eating frogs
C. some types of frogs
are poisonous
B. taste is illogical
and inarguable
D. taste is influenced by many
factors
79. The tribal people in India don’t
eat snakes because .
A. they are very
dangerous
C. they may spread disease
B. they are
respected by Indians
D. they help kill rats
80. The passage is probably written for the
purpose of .
A. introducing the eating
habit of Indian tribal people
B.
distinguishing different types of taste
C.
accounting for people’s different choices of taste
D. explaining the relationship between taste
and tribes
