Passage 1
Thousands
of
teachers
at
the
elementary,
secondary,
and
college
levels
can
prove
that their students' writing shows a tendency
towards a superficiality
(
表面性
事物
) that
wasn't seen ten or fifteen years ago. It shows up
not only in their lack of
analytical
skills,
but
in
poor
command
of
grammar
and
rhetoric
(
修辞
).
The
mechanics of the English
language have been torn into pieces by TV. Visual,
moving
images
can't
be
held
in
the
net
of
careful
language.
They
want
to
break
out.
They
really have nothing to do with
language, grammar, and rhetoric.
Recent
surveys by dozens of organizations also suggest
that up to 40% of the
American
public
is
functionally
illiterate.
That
is,
our
citizens'
reading
and
writing
abilities, if they have any, are
impaired so seriously as to render them, in that
handy
jargon
(
口头术语
) of our times,
dysfunctional (
目不识丁
). The
reading is taught
—
TV teaches people not to read. It
renders them incapable of engaging in an activity
that is regarded as vigorous, because
it is not a passive hypnotized
(
催眠的
) state.
Passive
as
it
is,
television
has
invaded
our
culture
so
completely
that
the
medium's
effects
are
evident
everywhere.
It
shows
up
in
supermarket

from
Stephen

to
pulp

庸俗的小说
).
These
really
are
forms
of
verbal
TV-literature that is so superficial
that those who read it can take delight in the
same
sensations they experience when
watching TV.
Even more importantly, the
growing influence of television has changed
people's
habits and affected their
assumptions about the world. The sort of
reflective, critical,
and value-loaded
thinking encouraged by books had been regarded out
of date.
Quite
literally,
TV

the
way
people
think.

poor, of course. They didn't have a house to live

We live in a
materialistic society and are trained from our

that
success

money.
We
spend
the
whole
life
keeping up with our
neighbors, the Joneses. If we buy a new TV, Jones
is bound to
buy a bigger one. If we buy
a new car, Jones will get two new cars: one for
his wife
and one for himself. The most
amusing thing about this game is that Joneses and
all
the neighbors who are struggling to
keep up with them are spending borrowed money

People are obsessed with the idea of
making more money. Customer goods are
desirable everywhere and modern
industry deliberately sets out to create new
markets.
Gone are the days when
industrial goods were made to last forever. The
wheels of
industry must be kept

Passage Two
Questions 36 to
40 are based on the following passage.
Work
is
a
very
important
part
of
life
in
the
United
States.
Americans
spend
most of their lives working. For most
Americans, their work defines them: they are
what they do. What happens then when a
person can no longer work?
Most
Americans stop working at age sixty-five or
seventy and retire. Because
work is
such an important part of life in this culture,
retirement can be very difficult.
Retirees often feel that they are
useless and unproductive. Of course, some people
are
happy to retire, but leaving one's
job, whatever it is, is a difficult change, even
for
those
who
look
forward
to
retiring.
Retirement
can
also
bring
financial
problems.
Many people depend on Social Security
checks every month. During their working
years, employees contribute a certain
percentage of their salaries to the government.
Each employer also gives a certain
percentage to the government. When people retire,
they
receive
this
money
as
income.
Their
checks
do
not provide
enough
money
to
live
on,
however,
because
prices
are
increasing
very
rapidly.
Senior
citizens,
those
over sixty-five, have
to have savings in the bank or other retirement
plans to make
ends
meet.
The
rate
of
inflation
is
forcing
prices
higher
each
year.
Social
Security
checks
alone
cannot
cover
these
growing
expenses.
The
government
offers
some
assistance,
but
many
senior
citizens
have
to
change
the
lifestyles
after
retirement.
They have to
spend carefully to be sure that they can afford to
buy food, fuel, and
other necessities.
Of course, many senior citizens are
happy with their retirement. They have time
to
spend
with
their
families
or
to
enjoy
their
hobbies.
Some
continue
to
work
part-time;
others
do
volunteer
work.
Some,
like
those
in
the
Retired
Business
Executives
Association,
even
help
young
people
to
get
started
in
new
businesses.
Many retired
citizens also belong to
trips and
social events. There are many other opportunities
for retirees.
36. What is the BEST
title for this passage?
A)
B) The American
Opinion of Work.
C) The Importance of Work
in America.
D) The
problems of Retirement in America.
正确答案:
D
37. Which of the following is NOT TRUE
about the retirees?
A) Some retirees
feel happy as they can have more time to enjoy
themselves.
