In
the book
Time to Eat the Dog: The Real
Guide to Sustainable
(可持续性)
Living
,
New
Zealand-based
architects
Robert
and
Brenda
Vale
say
keeping
a
medium-sized dog has the
same ecological
41
as driving 10,000 km a year in a
4.6 liter limousine. Calculating that
modern house pet
42
through about 164 kg
of meat
and 95 kg of cereals a year, the Vales estimated
the ecological footprint of
cats and
dogs, based on the amount of land needed to grow
pet food.
“There are no
recipes in the book,” Robert Vale said,
43
, in
a telephone
interview. “We’re not actually saying
it is time to
eat the dog.
We’re just saying that
we need to think
about and know the ecological impact of some of
the things we do
and that we take for
granted.” With pets’ diets under the control of
owners, how can
their unsustainable
appetites be cut
down? Changing
their diets into
44
ones,
the Vales say.
Instead they recommend
keeping “greener”, smaller, and more sustainable
pets,
such
as
goldfish,
chickens
or
rabbits.
The

Annoying
as
the
idea
may
be,
the
question
47
from
the
planet’s
growing
population
and
limited
resources,
Robert
Vale
said.
“Resources
issues
are
48
becoming things that are going to
require us to make choices which are as difficult
as
eating your dog. It’s not just about
changing your light bulbs or taking a cloth bag to
the supermarket,” he said.
“It’s about much more challenging and
difficult issues,” he added. “Once you see
cats and dogs fit in your overall
49
of things
——
you might decide to have
the
cat
but
also
to
have
the
two
cars
and
the
three
bathrooms
and
be
a
meat
eater
yourself.”

Have you ever

Gregg Taylor has a few

to help deal with the emotional side of

your job.
When
writing your resignation letter keep it short and

Timing and location are
key. Taylor suggests booking a conference room to

also suggests conducting the meeting in

Give your employer appropriate notice.

Southampton University team found that people who
were vegetarian by 30 had recorded
five
IQ points more on average at the age of 10.
Researchers said it could explain why people with
a higher IQ were healthier as a
vegetarian diet was linked to lower heart disease
and
obesity
(肥

rates. The study of 8,179 was
reported in the British Medical Journal.
Twenty
years
after
the
IQ
tests
were
carried
out
in
1970,
366
of
the
participants
said
they
were
vegetarian
—
although more
than 100 reported eating either fish or chicken.
Men who were vegetarian had an IQ score
of 106, compared with 101 for non-vegetarians;
while
female
vegetarians
averaged
104,
compared
with
99
for
non-vegetarians.
There
was
no
difference
in the IQ score between strict vegetarians and
those who said they were vegetarian but
reported eating fish or chicken.
Researchers said the findings were
partly related to better education and higher
class, but it
remained
stati
stically
(统计地)
significant
after adjusting for these factors.
Vegetarians were more likely to be
female, to be of higher social class and to have
higher
academic or professional
qualifications than non-vegetarians. However,
these differences were not
reflected in
their annual income, which was similar to that of
non-vegetarians.
Lead researcher
Catharine Gale said,
“
The
findings that children with greater intelligence
are
more
likely
to
report
being
vegetarians
than
adults,
together
with
the
evidence
on
the
potential
benefits of a vegetarian diet on heart
health, may help to explain why a higher IQ in
childhood or
adolescence is linked with
a reduced risk of
coronary heart
disease
(
冠心病
) in
adult life.
