Imagine someone who has
spent the majority of their life sitting with a
sign on the side of the
road and that
very person giving someone their last 20 dollars.
That's exactly what Marine Corps
veteran (
退伍军人
)
Johnny Bobbitt, 34, did in October in
Philadelphia.
Bobbitt
served in the U.S. Marine Corps and worked as a
paramedic (
医务辅助人员
) in Vance
County, N. C. before he became
homeless. Nobody knew how he got to where he was
because he
was discreet about
that.
One night in
October, Bobbitt was sitting roadside with a sign
in Philadelphia as usual, when
Kate
McClure of Florence Township, N. J. was driving
home down Interstate 95 and ran out of gas.
Scared and nervous, she got out of the
car to head to the nearest gas station. As McClure
was
heading to the nearest gas station,
she ran into Bobbitt and he told her to get back
in the vehicle
and lock the door.
Minutes later, he appeared with a red gas can.
He'd used his last $$20 to buy
her
gas.
After that
unexpected meeting, McClure and her boyfriend,
Mark D'Amico, who both live in
New
Jersey,
visited
Bobbitt several
times
to
deliver
gift
cards,
cash,
snacks
and
toiletries.
They
then decided to create a fund raising
page so he wouldn't have to spend the holidays
sleeping on
the street.
McClure started the GoFundMe page
on November 10. With the page, the couple hoped to
raise
$$10,000,
enough
money
for
his
rent,
a
reliable
vehicle
and
up
to
six
months'
expenses.
Bobbitt's story
ran in a local paper. By November
15
,
more than 10,000 local
people had made
donations through the
GoFundMe page and more than $$300,000 had been
raised.
On Thanksgiving,
Bobbitt was resting in a hotel, his feet up on the
bed, drawing up a grand plan
for his
new life, thanks to several thousand dollars
raised to repay him for a good deed.

阅读理解
It can be a real
struggle trying to learn a new language. I had
always enjoyed learning languages
in
school, but only recently did I start learning
German. I found that I could understand and learn
individual words easily, but when it
came to literature, I really struggled. That was
when my tutor
at university suggested
reading some children's books printed in the
target language.
At
first, I felt a bit silly going on a hunt for a
book designed for someone half my age, lout then I
realised
that
everyone
has
to
start
somewhere.
As
children,
we
are
given
these
basic
texts
to
familiarise
our
brains
with
certain
vocabulary
and
writing
structures,
and
from
there,
we
can
learn and develop. I
started with books which are taught to us as
children in the UK. I managed to
find
Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens and James and the
Giant Peach by Roald Dahl.
The
beauty
of
reading
books
that
were
introduced
to
you
as
a
child
is
that
you
are
already
familiar with the plot. As a result,
you can work out some of the definitions of words
with your
prior knowledge of the story.
At first, I used to read with the book in one hand
and a dictionary in
the other, but this
method did not work well for me. The method I
would recommend is to read a
chapter of
your chosen children's book and at the end of that
chapter, highlight the words you do
not
know and then look up the definitions. If you can
wait a bit before you use a dictionary, you
may
be
surprised
what
you
can
get
merely
from
the
context
of
the
sentence
in
the
story.
Additionally, a lot of children's books
have pictures which may give you a clue as to what
or to
whom the passage is
referring.

Why
was the author advised to read children's books?

reading great works.

couldn't remember any words.

passage?
A.
Vocabulary and listening skills.

What
causes the author feel surprised while reading
children's books?

the story.
D. Understanding
the words simply from the context.

When my father married
my mother in 1943, he gave my mother a 1937 crown
coin and told
her to keep it in the
back of her purse and not to spend it. This would
mean that she always felt
that she was
protected and would always have money if she
really needed it.
When I
was married in 1970 my husband who had heard this
story, obtained a 1937 crown coin
for
me and I have always kept it in my wallet, and I
have always had enough for my needs.
A friend recently fell on hard
times, partly through external

partly
through poor planning. Friends
and I have loaned her money, paid her bills, given
her food, and
even tried to teach her
budget techniques, but none of them has been a
solution. She has just
slipped deeper
and deeper into financial trouble and
depression.
Last week
she looked pale and unwell, very depressed and
hopeless, very sad for a friend to see
and I then thought about how the crown
coin, a physical reminder of another's care and
love had
protected me, so I went to the
bank for a $$ 100 dollar-bill.
I told my friend the story and
asked her to keep the $$ 100 in the back of her
wallet. It turned
out that she didn't
have a wallet, so she put the money in a little
pencil case where she kept her
coins.
She immediately felt

were both a bit teary.

that I'd never used, and thought,
